Delft, Western Cape

Belhar is a small town in the Western Cape, South Africa and forms part of the Cape Flats area in the City of Cape Town. It is known for being the place where the Belhar Confession was formulated.

Symphony Way Informal Settlement was a small community of pavement dwellers (shack dwellers who live on the pavement) that lived on Symphony Way, a main road in Delft, South Africa, from February 2008 until late 2009. They were a group of families that were evicted in February 2008 from the N2 Gateway Houses.

Symphony Way Temporary Relocation Area in Delft, Cape Town, better known by its nickname Blikkiesdorp, is a relocation camp made-up of corrugated iron shacks. Blikkiesdorp, which is Afrikaans for "Tin Can Town", was given its name by residents because of the row-upon-row of tin-like one room structures throughout the settlement.

Erica Park, sometimes also referred to as Erica Park Stadium, is a multi-use stadium, situated in the Belhar suburb of Cape Town, at the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Until June 2010, the stadíum was known as the sole home venue of Ikapa Sporting, but since then, the club -for unknown reasons- preferred instead to play their home games in the Wynberg suburb.

University of the Western Cape Stadium, commonly abbreviated and referred to as Operation Room, and sometimes also referred to as University of the Western Cape Sports Ground, is a multi-use stadium, situated in the Bellville suburb of Cape Town, at the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The exact location, is at the Southeastern corner of University of the Western Cape, only 300m from the Unibell railway station. Since its construction in 1983, the stadium has been home to UWC athletics, rugby, soccer and numerous other sporting events and local gatherings. The stadium complex also feature several offices, and became the new official SAFA headquarters for the West Coast Regional League, in August 2006.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (Afrikaans: Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie) is a university in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the only university of technology in the Western Cape province, and is also the largest university in the province, with over 32,000 students. It was formed by merging the Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon as well as a few other independent colleges.

The University of the Western Cape (UWC; Afrikaans: Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland) is a public research university in Bellville, near Cape Town, South Africa. The university was established in 1959 by the South African government as a university for Coloured people only. Other universities in Cape Town are the University of Cape Town, (UCT, originally for English speaking whites), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the Stellenbosch University (originally for Afrikaans speaking whites). The establishing of UWC was a direct effect of the Extension of University Education Act, 1959. This law accomplished the segregation of higher education in South Africa. Coloured students were only allowed at a few non-white universities. In this period, other "ethnical" universities, such as the University of Zululand and the University of the North, were founded as well. Since well before the end of apartheid in South Africa in 1994, it has been an integrated and multiracial institution.

The South African National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI) is a non-profit organisation in Cape Town, South Africa dedicated to bioinformatics, biotechnology and genomics in health research. SANBI maintains current collaborations with institutes and laboratories at Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Stanford University, the Pasteur Institute, the RIKEN institute, the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale and the European Bioinformatics Institute. SANBI is the South African national node of the European Molecular Biology Network, the regional site for the World Health Organization African centre for training in pathogen bioinformatics, and an affiliate of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. SANBI is funded by several organisations including the South African Medical Research Council, the National Research Foundation of South Africa, the Claude Leon Foundation, the John E. Fogarty Foundation for International Health at the National Institutes of Health, and the European Commission. SANBI was founded in 1996 by computational biologist Winston Hide, the founding director, as part of the faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of the Western Cape. The SANBI research team includes faculty in the areas of genetic diversity, gene regulation, cancer, sleeping sickness and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Belhar Secondary School (Afrikaans: Belhar Sekondêre Skool) is an Afrikaans/English mixed medium school in Belhar, Western Cape, South Africa. As of 2006 it had some 1,274 students [1] and was staffed by 35 educators. [2]. In 2006 the Western Cape Education Department designated it one of 10 "Arts and Culture focus schools" to be set up over the following three years. [3]

The Cape Flats (Afrikaans: Die Kaapse Vlakte) is an expansive, low-lying, flat area situated to the southeast of the central business district of Cape Town. The Cape Flats is also the name of an administrative region of the City of Cape Town, which lies within the larger geographical area.

Mfuleni is a relatively new township about 32 kilometres from central Cape Town, South Africa. It is a predominantly Black township, although there are also some Coloured members of the community. Mfuleni is a suburb of Blue Downs area and is close to the sprawling township of Khayelitsha and also next to the new suburb of Malibu Village. Around 52,300 people live in this township. Most were moved there from the late 1990s following flooding and fires in different townships across the Western Cape, such as Philippi, Nyanga and Khayelitsha. Hence, the mixed nature of the community here. Unemployment, HIV/AIDS and crime are some of the most pressing problems in this poor township. Recently, the Department of Local government and Housing with its partners established a new housing project which built an additional 165 houses.Only 43% of Mfuleni residents are employed.

Thunder City was an aircraft operating and maintenance company based at the Cape Town International Airport in Cape Town, South Africa. It was well known for owning the largest civilian collection of former military jet aircraft in the world. These aircraft were used to perform in airshows and could also be chartered by the general public for recreational flights, including going supersonic and climbing to altitudes around 50,000 feet. Following a fatal accident in 2009 in which an English Electric Lightning crashed at an airshow, the company ceased flying operations after the accident investigation found major shortcomings in its maintenance programme.The company's other activities included upgrading older models of the Aerospatiale Puma helicopter with modern avionics and renovating airframes and engines.
