WMAJ (1230 kHz) is an AM radio station in the Elmira-Corning market of New York state. It broadcasts at 1,000 watts at day and 910 watts at night from studios in Corning, New York. It airs an adult contemporary format branded as "Magic 106.7/106.9".

Newtown Battlefield State Park, formerly known as Newtown Battlefield Reservation, was the site of the Battle of Newtown fought in August 1779, during the American Revolutionary War. It was the only major battle of the Sullivan Expedition, an armed offensive led by General John Sullivan that was ordered by the Continental Congress to end the threat of the Iroquois who had sided with the British in the American Revolutionary War. In the battle, the Iroquois were defeated decisively. A portion of the battlefield is today managed as a 372-acre (1.51 km2) state park. The entire battlefield (about 2,100 acres (850 ha)) was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. The American Battlefield Trust and its partners have acquired and preserved more than 68 acres adjacent to the state park.

The Battle of Newtown (August 29, 1779) was the only major battle of the Sullivan Expedition, an armed offensive led by Major General John Sullivan that was ordered by George Washington to end the threat of the Iroquois who had sided with the British in the American Revolutionary War. Opposing Sullivan's four brigades were 250 Loyalist soldiers from Butler's Rangers, commanded by Major John Butler, and 350 Iroquois and Munsee Delaware. Butler and Mohawk war leader Joseph Brant did not want to make a stand at Newtown, and instead proposed to harass the enemy on the march, but were overruled by Sayenqueraghta and other Indigenous war leaders. This battle, which was the most significant military engagement of the campaign, took place at the foot of a hill along the Chemung River just outside what is now Elmira, New York.

Dunn Field is a stadium in Elmira, New York primarily used for baseball. Located on the banks of the Chemung River at the end of Luce St, it has been the home of various incarnations of the Elmira Pioneers since its opening in 1939.

Elmira High School, commonly referred to as EHS, is a high school in Elmira, New York, United States. It was one of two public high schools operated by the Elmira City School District serving Chemung County, alongside Elmira Free Academy, before the two merged into its current state in 2014.The school has the honor to be recognized by the New York State Education Department as the only high performing school in the district, scoring the highest averages on state testing and curriculum exercises. Southside offers many special classes such as AP and ACE classes that could potentially count for future college credits. Aside from academics, Southside has been a strong contender in many different sports throughout the years, boasting an upgraded hall of fame in its gymnasium area. The high school is also involved in several different club opportunities, the top three being FBLA-PBL (Future Business Leaders of America), Key Club, and National Honor Society. All three are directly involved in community service. Some of these, with the addition of student council, assist in planning events such as Southside's annual Special Olympics program, the spirit week activities for what is now known as the "Express Fest," community service involvement, school functions such as managing program box offices and the school store, amongst other positive endeavors of the many clubs.

WENI-FM (92.7 MHz) is an American radio station licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve the community of South Waverly, Pennsylvania (located south of Waverly, New York). Starting in early 2010, the then-WPHD moved to Comfort Hill in Ashland, New York, just south of Elmira. WENI-FM is located on the same radio tower as Elmira-licensed WCBF. WENI-FM now has one of the strongest signals in Chemung County, New York, and the greater Elmira area. At one time, the call sign WPHD was assigned to FM station WMTT (94.7 FM) in Tioga, Pennsylvania, but changed in 2005. WMTT remains a sister station of WPHD. WMTT is co-located within the WPHD studios located on Chemung Street in Horseheads, New York. In 2017, owner Europa Communications filed to swap the license for WPHD to Sound Communications in exchange for the license to WENY-FM. The station swap was consummated on November 15, 2017, along with the formats. Additionally, the stations swapped call signs on November 20, 2017. On December 8, 2017, WENY-FM moved from 96.1 FM to 92.7 FM. The station swapped call signs with its Big Flats, New York–based sister station on December 27, 2017, assuming the WENI-FM call sign. The trade was largely a legal fiction to allow both stations to swap cities of license and allow each station's respective owners to make potential expansions (as Europa's stations were mostly rimshots that did not count toward FCC ownership caps the same way in-market stations do). Standard Media announced its purchase of Sound Communications and its affiliated companies in November 2019. In June 2021 WENI-FM changed their format from adult contemporary, which moved to WENY (1230 AM), to classic rock, branded as "The Met"; this format moved from WMTT-FM (100.9) in Horseheads, which had been acquired by the Family Life Network and became WCID.

WCBF (96.1 MHz, "95-96-97 Bigfoot Country") is an FM radio station licensed to Elmira, New York. It is owned by Seven Mountains Media and airs a country music format.

The Southport Correctional Facility was an ultra-maximum-security, or "supermax", prison, run by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It was located in the town of Southport, in the Southern Tier of New York State, United States. It was rare for a prisoner to be sent directly to Southport from the outside; virtually all of its inmates were transferred there after committing serious disciplinary infractions at some other prison in the state. On occasion, however, a particularly notorious inmate was sent there for "protective custody"; that is to say, to prevent him from being attacked by other inmates. One example was convicted child-killer Joel Steinberg. The prison closed on March 10, 2022.

Maple Avenue Historic District is a national historic district located at Elmira, Chemung County, New York. It encompasses 121 contributing buildings and four contributing objects in a predominantly residential section of Elmira. It developed between about 1869 and 1940, and includes notable examples of Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed John Brand Jr. House, John Brand Sr. House, and Alexander Eustace House. Other notable buildings are the J.H. Harris House (1892), Samuel W. Clark House (c. 1869), James H. Clark House (c. 1869), and Horace W. Personius House (1913).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Ashland is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,515 at the 2020 census. The town is named after the home of Henry Clay. Ashland is on the southern border of the county, south of Elmira. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area.
