Mountfair, Virginia

Mount Fair is a historic home and farm complex located in Albemarle County, Virginia. The main house was built about 1848, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-bay, frame building with Greek Revival style details. It has a hipped roof with widow's walk and a one-story, one-bay porch with a flat roof supported by Doric order columns. Also on the property are a contributing detached kitchen, a greenhouse, and two contributing structures, an icehouse and a spring house. The tract also has three contributing sites: the ruins of slave quarters, a slave cemetery, and a family cemetery.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Doyles River is a 10.1-mile-long (16.3 km) tributary of the Moormans River in central Virginia in the United States. Via the Moormans, Rivanna and James rivers, it is part of the watershed of Chesapeake Bay. According to the Geographic Names Information System, the river has also been known as the Doyle River. The United States Board on Geographic Names settled on "Doyles River" as the stream's official name in 1933.

White Hall is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia."Whitehall, in the northwestern portion of the county, was an election precinct known as Glenn's Store, William Maupin's Store, Maupin's Tavern, Miller's Store, Shumate's Tavern, until 1835. Then, it was named Whitehall for a White family living in the community. Pop. 55; elev. 722."Whitehall was an election district, and was also previously named Glenn's Store; William Maupin's Store; Maupin's Tavern; Miller's Tavern; Shumate's Tavern, until the present name was established in 1835.The Virginia house of Delegates passed Bill 111 on December 19, 1849, for a survey of a road from Shumate's Tavern to Covington, Virginia in Alleghany County, Virginia. In January 1849 a grant in aid was proposed to intersect the turnpike from Vance's on the Huntersville and Warm Springs Turnpike to the Jackson's River Turnpike at John Shumate's Tavern, a distance of about 15 miles.

Ballard–Maupin House, also known as Plainview Farm, is a historic home located at Free Union, Albemarle County, Virginia. The original part of the house was built in the 1750-1790 period and is the one-story with attic, three-bay, gable-roofed, frame section on the east. Around 1800–1820, the house was extended on the west by an additional two bays and an attic story was added. It measures approximately 34 feet wide and 30 feet deep. In 1994–1995, the house was restored and a late-19th century addition was removed and replaced with a one-story, shed-roofed, frame addition. Also on the property are a mid-19th century, gable-roofed, frame shed; and frame tractor shed that may date to the mid-1940s.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

On October 30, 1959, Piedmont Airlines Flight 349, a Douglas DC-3, crashed on Bucks Elbow Mountain near Crozet, Virginia, killing the crew of three and all but one of its twenty-four passengers. The sole survivor, Ernest P. Bradley, was seriously injured and lay on the ground near the wreckage, still strapped in his seat.

The Blackrock Springs Site (44-AU-167) is an archaeological site in Shenandoah National Park, in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. The site was discovered during the early 1970s as part of a comprehensive survey of the national park. It is one of fifteen sites that the survey found along Paine Run,: 135  a group that also includes the Paine Run Rockshelter and the unnamed 44-AU-154.: 136  Located near the stream's source at Blackrock Springs,: 90  the site measures approximately 150 by 60 metres (490 ft × 200 ft),: 89  although the survey concluded that it was only about 5 centimetres (2.0 in) deep.: 198  It was occupied during an exceptionally long period of time, beginning before 7000 BC and continuing until after 1000 BC;: 167  among the earliest artifacts found at Blackrock Springs is a St. Albans-related projectile point, and the most intensive uses appear to date from the middle to late Archaic period.: 92  This chronological distribution, together with the uneven physical distribution of artifacts (most were found in several small clusters, rather than being spread evenly around the site): 104  and the nature of the artifacts found (approximately 98% of the three thousand items catalogued were pieces of locally obtained quartzite), led investigators to conclude that millennia of tribesmen in the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont used the site as a base camp for occasional hunting and gathering on the mountainside.: 168 The Blackrock Springs Site's archaeological value is so significant that it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1985, together with the Paine Run shelter and site 44-AU-154.

Midway, also known as Riverdale Farm, is a historic home and farm complex located near Millington, Albemarle County, Virginia. The main dwelling is a two-story, four-bay brick structure with a two-story porch. It was built in three sections, with the east wing built during the 1820s and a second structure to the west about 1815; they were connected in the late 19th century. The east wing features Federal woodwork. A rear (north) kitchen wing was added about 1930. It is connected to the main house by a two-story hyphen. Also on the property are a contributing brick kitchen and wood-frame barn. The grounds of Midway were landscaped in 1936 by noted landscape architect Charles Gillette.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
