Béthune (river)

The Varenne (French pronunciation: [vaʁɛn] ) is a river of Normandy, France, 39 kilometres (24 mi) in length, flowing through the department of Seine-Maritime. It is a tributary of the river Arques. The river is the ultimate source of the surname and given name Warren, via William de Warenne of Bellencombre castle, his hereditary seat. de Warenne was a companion of William the Conqueror and made first Earl of Surrey in 1088 as reward for his service during the Norman Conquest.

The river Eaulne (French pronunciation: [o(l)n]) is one of the rivers that flow from the plateau of the eastern Pays de Caux in the Seine-Maritime département of Normandy in northern France. It is 45.5 km (28.3 mi) long. The Eaulne's source is at Mortemer. It then flows northwestwards through Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière, Saint-Germain-sur-Eaulne, Londinières, Douvrend, Envermeu, turning westward at Bellengreville and on to Ancourt, Martin-Église and joins the river Arques at Arques-la-Bataille.

The Battle of Arques occurred on 15–29 September 1589 between the French royal forces of King Henry IV of France and troops of the Catholic League commanded by Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, during the eighth and final war (1585–1598) of the French Wars of Religion. It was a victory for Henry IV.

Arques-la-Bataille (French pronunciation: [aʁk la bataj]) is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region in north-western France. The zoologist Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville (1777–1850) was born in Arques.

Arques-la-Bataille British Cemetery is a military cemetery in Arques-la-Bataille near Dieppe, France, that contains the graves of nearly 400 servicemen of the British Empire in the First World War. The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and was designed by John Reginald Truelove. Many of the soldiers buried there were members of the South African Native Labour Corps. The cemetery contains 381 graves, of which 378 have been identified.

The Château d'Arques-la-Bataille is a 12th-century castle in the commune of Arques-la-Bataille in the Seine-Maritime département of France. The castle is owned by the state. It has been listed since 1875 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
