Hvide Sande

Until 1 January 2007 Holmsland was a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Ringkjøbing County on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 95 km2 on a narrow strip of land, Holmsland Dunes (Holmsland Klit), which is connected to the mainland on the north and south, and bounded on the east by Ringkøbing Fjord and on the west by the North Sea. It had a total population of 5,285 (2005). Its last mayor was Ivar Enevoldsen. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Hvide Sande ("White Sands"). The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes: Gammelsogn Parish Holmsland Klit Parish Nysogn Parish Holmsland municipality ceased to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It was merged with existing Egvad, Ringkøbing, Skjern, and Videbæk municipalities to form the new Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 1,485 km2 and a total population of 57,818 (2005). The new municipality belong to Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region"). The merger was a hot issue in Holmsland municipality, since Holmslund distinguished itself by having Denmark's lowest tax rate, and residents expected that this rate would increase on account of the merger. According to Dagbladet Børsen, Denmark's leading business paper, residents risked a loss on their properties of more than 250,000 DKr, and a yearly tax increase of 15,000 DKr on account of the merger [link removed].

Abeline's House (Danish: Abelines Gaard) is a former waterfront farmhouse at Haurvig, just south of Hvide Sande, Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, on the Danish West Coast. It was converted into a local history museum for Holmsland Dunes (Holmsland Klit) in the 1970s and is now part of Ringkøbing–Skjern Museum.

Ringkøbing Fjord, despite its name, is in fact a shallow lagoon on the west coast of Jutland. Skjern River terminates in Ringkøbing Fjord with a large river delta system to the east, and the lagoon is shielded from the North Sea by a long isthmus named Holmsland Dunes to the west. On the Hvide Sande Canal in the middle of the isthmus, there is a floodgate that provides access to the sea to the west. The fjord is about 30 kilometers long and 2 to 3 meters deep with an area of almost 300 square kilometers (115 square miles). In the southwestern corner is the Tipperne peninsula, where there is a bird reservation. The town of Ringkøbing lies to the north-east. Ringkøbing Fjord was once affected by oxygen depletion, but today both plant and fish life abounds. Ringkøbing Fjord was originally a bay, around which two sandbars have gradually built up, with a sandbank that has shifted repeatedly over time as a result of shifting water currents. In the mid-17th century, the bank was near Sønder Havrvig, but it gradually moved south as sand was deposited on the shoal from the north. By the late 18th century, it was close to the town of Nymindegab. On several occasions, the surrounding dunes collapsed from the effects of the water, causing the old outflow to fill with sand and creating problems for local fisherman. In 1891, a channel was therefore dug south of Nymindegab but, in 1910, it was replaced by a channel in Hvide Sande. A storm surge in 1911 created an opening of 230 meters and extensive flooding around the fjord. In 1915, the passage at the southern end of the fjord was therefore reopened while the one near Hvide Sande was closed. It was, however, later reopened with the establishment of a lock in 1931.

Kloster is a small town in the western part of Central Denmark Region with a population of 637 (1 January 2023). Kloster is located between the North Sea, Stadil Fjord and Ringkøbing Fjord.

Ringkøbing (older spelling Ringkjøbing) is a town in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality in Region Midtjylland on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. It has a population of 9,975 (1 January 2023).

Survival of the Fattest is a sculpture of a small, starved boy carrying a fat woman. The sculpture was made by Jens Galschiøt and Lars Calmar in 2002, as a symbol of the imbalanced distribution of the world’s resources. In 2006 it was acquired by the city of Ringkøbing, Central Denmark Region, and placed in the harbour.

Hotel Ringkøbing is a hotel located on the central market square in Ringkøbing, Denmark. The oldest part of the building dates from the 17th century. It was listed in 1919. The hotel has 59 rooms, including 2 large with wheelchair access, and 4 banquet facilities for 25-100 people and small meeting rooms.

Ringkjøbing County (Danish: Ringkjøbing Amt) is a former county (Danish: amt) on the Jutland peninsula in western Denmark. It had the lowest population density of all the Danish counties. The county was abolished effective January 1, 2007, when it merged into Region Midtjylland (i.e. Region Central Jutland). Note of terminology: A modern Danish spelling of the name would be Ringkøbing Amt, but the county officially used an older, traditional spelling, as opposed to the municipality of Ringkøbing.

Ringkøbing railway station (Danish: Ringkøbing Station or Ringkøbing Banegård) is a railway station serving the market town of Ringkøbing in West Jutland, Denmark. It is located in central Ringkøbing, to the northeast of the town centre, and immediately adjacent to the Ringkøbing bus station. Ringkøbing station is located on the Esbjerg–Struer railway line from Esbjerg to Struer. The station opened in 1875. It offers regional rail services to Holstebro and Skjern, operated by the railway company Midtjyske Jernbaner.

Ringkjøbing Gymnasium is a small gymnasium (secondary school) in the town of Ringkøbing, Denmark.

Tipperne and Værneengene is a peninsula that is located in the southern end of Ringkøbing Fjord (Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, Region Midtjylland), on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark. The area, an important stopover for migratory birds, was created by sand deposits and is only a few hundred years old. It has been publicly owned since the latter half of the 18th century, and in 1898 provisions on conservation were introduced to protect the rich bird life in the area. In 1928 a bird reservation was established and a groundskeeper was hired. The reserve, which falls under the control of Denmark's Environmental Ministry and is managed by the Danish Forest and Nature Agency (Danish: Skov- og Naturstyrelsen) via Oxbøl Statsskovdistrikt, has a total area of about 2,200 ha, of which about 1,500 ha are shallow water areas around the peninsula. Tipperne is part of a larger conservation of Ringkøbing Fjord, which is also designated as a Ramsar wetland, that is, an international area of importance for waterfowl in accordance with the Ramsar Convention and EF's bird protection directive. So that the birds may have peace and quiet, Tipperne is normally closed to the public. However, there are exceptions, usually on Sunday mornings.

Nymindegab lies in Southwest Jutland, Denmark, and is a former fishing village by the former outflow at the southern end of Ringkøbing Fjord. In the summer, it is a well-attended tourist town with a permanent population of 205 (1 January 2021). It is located in Varde Municipality and belongs to Region of Southern Denmark. The town is situated at the southern end of the isthmus of Holmsland Dunes, which demarcates the fjord from the North Sea. Just northeast of Nymindegab lies the bird reservation of Tipperne on a peninsula in Ringkøbing Fjord. In Nymindegab there is a Nymindegab Museum, where one can see, among other things, a whale skeleton, pictures from the area, and nature depicted by artists who have remained in the area over time. At Nymindegab Rescue Station one can see Denmark's oldest lifeboat, which from 1966 was kept at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, but was returned to Nymindegab in 1977.
