Crittenden Bridge

Crittenden is an unincorporated community in the independent city of Suffolk, Virginia, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 17 just south of its crossing of Chuckatuck Creek.

Chuckatuck Creek is a 13.3-mile-long (21.4 km) tributary of the James River in the U.S. state of Virginia. The creek rises in Isle of Wight County and flows southeast to Chuckatuck in the city of Suffolk, where it turns northeast as it passes under State Route 10/State Route 32. Becoming tidal, the creek continues northeast to the mouth of Brewers Creek, where it broadens considerably and becomes the boundary between Isle of Wight County and the city of Suffolk. If proceeds under the Crittenden Bridge (U.S. Route 17) at Crittenden and reaches the James River at Batten Bay.

Hobson is in the independent city of Suffolk, Virginia, United States. It is located along State Route 628 southwest of U.S. Route 17, on the neck between Chuckatuck Creek and the Nansemond River.

The Nansemond River Bridge, officially the Mills E. Godwin Bridge, is located in the independent city of Suffolk, Virginia and carries U.S. Route 17 across the Nansemond River. The current bridge, opened in 1982, was named in honor of former Virginia governor Mills E. Godwin Jr., a prominent member of the Chuckatuck community. The 1982 structure replaced an earlier one built in 1928 by the James River Bridge Corporation as part of a three-bridge system privately funded to be paid for through toll revenues. The others were the original James River Bridge and the Crittenden Bridge (also known as the Chuckatuck Creek Bridge), each of which was also replaced with newer structures during the last quarter of the 20th century.

Carrollton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 4,574.Carrollton is located near the southern end of the James River Bridge across from Newport News. Carrollton has recently experienced growth as a bedroom community.

The Nansemond River is a 19.8-mile-long (31.9 km) tributary of the James River in Virginia in the United States. Virginian colonists named the river for the Nansemond tribe of Native Americans, who had long inhabited the area. They continue as a federally recognized tribe in Virginia. The river begins at the outlet of Lake Meade north of downtown Suffolk, which had historically marked the northern boundary of the city. The Nansemond River Light once signaled the river's confluence with the James. The Nansemond River Bridge, once a toll bridge and part of U.S. Route 17, crosses the river near its mouth. Two other bridges cross the river, one from downtown Suffolk and one on Route 58. The Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge is located along the river.

Bartlett is an unincorporated community in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, United States. It is located at the junction of U.S. Route 17, U.S. Route 258, and State Route 32, on the James River Bridge approach southeast of Smithfield.

Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area, also known as Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge, is a 1,537-acre (6.22 km2) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Within a few miles of one of Virginia's busiest and most populated regions is the Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area, a largely unspoiled area of marshland and scattered woody hummocks. It includes unspoiled brackish marsh and small pine islands adjacent the south bank of the James River. The area is dominated by vegetation such as marsh mallow, smartweed, saltmarsh cordgrass, and black needlerush, with loblolly pine as the most common tree species. Impenetrable areas of wax myrtle and greenbriar are also found on the property. The area is known in particular for its wide range of waterfowl. Ragged Island WMA is managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is open to the public for hunting, trapping, fishing, and hiking. A boardwalk allows access for viewing the marsh and its wildlife. The WMA may accessed from two parking areas on U.S. Highway 17 just south of the James River Bridge. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.
