Higgins Corner is an unincorporated community in Nevada County, California. It lies at an elevation of 1427 feet (435 m). Higgins Corner is located 12.5 miles (20.1 km) south of Grass Valley.

Meadow Vista is a census-designated place (CDP) in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,217 at the 2010 census, up from 3,096 at the 2000 census.

Wolf is a historic agricultural community in the western part of Nevada County. It lies about 12 miles south of Grass Valley at an elevation of 1578 feet. It is centered around the intersection of present day Wolf and Garden Bar roads. The Wolf District, as it was originally called, was named for Wolf Creek, which runs through the area. Wolf Creek reportedly was named in 1849 by miners who camped by the creek and saw wolves fighting over the remains of a cow they had slaughtered. The name appears to have been shortened to Wolf with the establishment of a post office in 1888. Farmers and ranchers begin moving into the area in the 1860s, gradually supplanting the early miners. Among the earliest settlers was Jackson B. Underwood. In 1869, William Sweet, an immigrant from Cornwall, bought Underwood's 200 acres and began expanding it. In 1871, William's wife Katherine and their five children arrived. William was killed in a confrontation with a neighboring rancher in 1872. Descendants of William and Katherine still own substantial ranches around Wolf. The population of the area continued to increase and in 1888, a post office was established in Wolf. On August 24, 1888, one of William's sons, John Sweet, became postmaster. John Sweet operated the post office from the living room of his ranch house, located just west of the intersection of Wolf and Garden Bar roads. The post office became a sort of community center, and at one point served about 75 residents. Beginning in 1891, the community also had its own school. In 1890, it reportedly had Methodist and Christian churches.John Sweet served as Wolf postmaster until February 19, 1940, and was reportedly the longest serving US postmaster. His nephew W.B. Sweet took over as postmaster and built a small building on his ranch about 1/2 mile south of John's ranch to house the post office. By 1956, with only 2 other residents still using the post office, it was decommissioned at the postmaster's request. The second post office building was moved close to the intersection of Wolf and Garden Bar, where it remains. A few historic buildings remain in the area, which now features agriculture, ranching and horse breeding.

Applegate is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. It is 7.25 mi (11,670 m) south-southwest of Colfax, and 9.3 mi (15.0 km) northeast of Auburn. The city's msl elevation is 2,005 ft (611 m). Its ZIP code is 95703 and its area code 530. Applegate was originally settled in 1849 by Lisbon Applegate, who came to California with his son, George, from Missouri. Part of a family that first emigrated to America in the 17th century, the Applegates bought acreage above Clipper Gap, California, and established a fruit ranch there. The main house of the Applegate Ranch was where Oliver's gas station and bar sits today. Lisbon eventually returned to Missouri but his son, George W. Applegate, stayed. As the town grew, it was called Bear River House for its proximity to the Bear River, a short distance northwest. When a post office was established in 1855, the community officially became known as Lisbon in honor of its founder. George W. Applegate became postmaster, and in the 1870s, the settlement was renamed Applegate, also to honor its founder.At one time, Applegate was a station on the Central Pacific Railroad (later Southern Pacific). When a second track was added in 1929, the station on the eastbound track was named East Applegate. The tracks are separated by about .25 mi (0.40 km). From Placer GOLD, November 1973; "Applegate is a quiet little town about eight miles northeast of Auburn, rudely severed in two parts by Interstate 80. The town consists of a post office, motel, hardware store, grocery and saloon-and something else..." Applegate is also the only known place in Northern California where the Ladyfoot Trumpet flower grows wild. Some people believe that its seeds were left here long ago when the Lemurians passed through on their way to Mount Shasta.

Clipper Gap (also, Clippergap) is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. Clipper Gap is located 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of Auburn. It lies at an elevation of 1676 feet (511 m).The first transcontinental railroad reached Clipper Gap in 1865, and local mills supplied black powder and lime for use in railroad construction. The town began to decline after the railroad's construction was complete, and the town later became a service stop on the Lincoln Highway. Today Clipper Gap is a rural residential area.The Clipper Gap post office opened in 1866, changed its name to Clippergap in 1894, reverted its name to Clipper Gap in 1950, and closed permanently in 1960.

Weimar University, formerly Weimar Institute, Weimar College and Weimar Center of Health & Education, is a private university in Weimar, California. It operates a college, academy, and lifestyle-oriented health care center. It highlights traditional Seventh-day Adventist principles of health and education, especially as espoused by early Seventh-day Adventist founder Ellen G. White, who wrote extensively on health and education. Although founded by Adventists, it has never been legally affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Pine Hills Adventist Academy is a private Seventh-Day Adventist K-12 Christian school founded and established in 1941 in Auburn, California. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system.

Bowman is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. Bowman is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad, 3.25 miles (5.2 km) north-northeast of Auburn. It lies at an elevation of 1617 feet (493 m).The Bowman post office opened in 1893. The name honors Harry Hoisington Bowman, fruit grower.

DeWitt General Hospital was a World War II US Army Hospital in Auburn, California in Placer County at the corner of C Avenue and First Street. The hospital was built in 1944 to care for troops returning home from overseas service and troops that served on the home front. The first patient checked in on February 17, 1944. The hospital had 2,285 beds housed in single story buildings over the 284 acres campus. DeWitt General Hospital was three miles north of downtown Auburn.
