Portadown massacre

Portadown (from Irish Port an Dúnáin 'landing place of the little fort' pronounced [pɔɾˠt̪ˠ ə ˈd̪ˠuːnˠaːnʲ]) is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The town sits on the River Bann in the north of the county, about 24 mi (39 km) southwest of Belfast. It is in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area and had a population of about 22,000 at the 2011 Census. For some purposes, Portadown is treated as part of the "Craigavon Urban Area", alongside Craigavon and Lurgan. Although Portadown can trace its origins to the early 17th century Plantation of Ulster, it was not until the Victorian era and the arrival of the railway that it became a major town. It earned the nickname "hub of the North" due to it being a major railway junction; where the Great Northern Railway's line diverged for Belfast, Dublin, Armagh and Derry. In the 19th and 20th centuries Portadown was also a major centre for the production of textiles (mainly linen). Portadown is the site of the long-running Drumcree dispute, over yearly marches by the Protestant Orange Order through the Catholic part of the town, which often sparked violence and protests. In the 1990s, the dispute escalated and prompted a massive security operation, drawing worldwide attention to Portadown.

Clounagh Junior High School is a controlled school on the Brownstown Road, Portadown, Northern Ireland. It accepts male and female pupils following primary education. Generally, children attend for three years (from ages 11–14) however, those with special educational needs stay for an extra two years. After the children leave, they are ordinarily transferred to either Portadown College or Craigavon Senior High School.It follows Craigavon two-tier system, commonly called the Dickson Plan. As of 2023, the school principal is Phillip Elliott following the retirement of former principal Raymond Hill.

Killicomaine Junior High School is a controlled school in Portadown, Northern Ireland. It accepts male and female pupils following primary education. Children attend for three years and generally transfer to either Portadown College or Craigavon Senior High School. The school plays rugby, football, and hockey along with others. It was founded in 1958.It follows Craigavon two-tier system, commonly called the Dickson Plan. In the Dickson plan, pupils attend a Junior High for three years before transferring to a different school for further education. Though non-denominational, the school has a Protestant ethos, with local Protestant clergy going to the school every Friday for assembly and to take religious classes.

Shamrock Park is a football stadium in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is the home ground of Portadown F.C. Shamrock Park was previously used for stock-car racing, but this has since been discontinued. The stadium is classed as an all-seater stadium but has only two seated stands around the pitch totaling 2,770 seats, with one side containing a training pitch and the other having an older seated stand which is no longer in use. When grant aid is available, the older stand will be demolished and replaced with a brand new seated stand.

St John the Baptist's College is a non-selective, co-educational, secondary school located in Portadown, Northern Ireland.

Portadown Railway Station serves the town of Portadown in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The station is located on the Belfast-Dublin railway line. The original station opened in 1842, and the present station opened in 1970.

Drumcree College was a Roman Catholic secondary school located in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It officially opened after the amalgamation of St Brigid's Girls' High School and St Malachy's Boys' High School in 1985 becoming Drumcree High School. In 1997, the school was officially renamed Drumcree College due to the provision of Post 16 courses which were available at the time. However, pupil numbers continued to decline and it was decided in 2016 to close and to become a junior high (11–13 years) school. Drumcree College closed in August 2017 and the renamed St John the Baptist's College opened the following month.

The Mahon Road Barracks was a military installation in Portadown, Northern Ireland.

Portadown Town Hall is a municipal structure in Edward Street, Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The structure, which is primarily used as a theatre, is a Grade B1 listed building.

Drumcree Parish Church, officially The Church of the Ascension, is the Church of Ireland parish church of Drumcree in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It sits on a hill in the townland of Drumcree, outside Portadown. It is a site of historic significance and is a listed building.There has been a church on the site since the Middle Ages. The foundation stone of the present church was laid on Ascension Day in 1855, and the church was consecrated the following year. The current rector is the Reverend Gary Galway, previous curate of St. Marks Parish in Portadown. The Church of Ireland parish of Drumcree has the same boundaries as the Roman Catholic parish of Drumcree. For several years in the 1990s, the church drew international attention as the scene of the Drumcree standoffs. Each year, the Protestant Orange Order marches to-and-from a service at the church on the Sunday before 12th July. Residents of the nearby Catholic district prevented the march from continuing through their neighbourhood. Thousands of Orangemen and loyalists gathered at Drumcree and violently tried to force their way through, but were held back by the security forces, who built large steel and barbed wire barricades. These yearly "sieges" of Drumcree ended in the early 2000s.

Annagh United Football Club (The name 'Annagh' from Irish Eanach 'Marsh') is a semi-professional, Northern Irish football club playing in the NIFL Championship. The club, founded in 1963, hails from Portadown and plays its home matches at the BMG Arena. The club home colours are all red and away all white.

Seagoe parish or St Gobhan's parish is an ecclesiastical parish of the Church of Ireland that is located in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is on one of the oldest recorded sites of Christianity in Ireland. Christian links to the area date back to the early 500 AD's. It was founded by St. Gobhan.The current rector is Terence Cadden, having been installed in 2006. The current rector's predecessor is David Chillingworth, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Another previous rector was Jack Shearer, who later became the Dean of Belfast.
