Gavar (Armenian: Գավառ [ɡɑˈvɑr]) is a town in Armenia serving as the administrative centre of the Gavar Municipality and the Gegharkunik Province. It is situated among the high mountains of Gegham range to the west of Lake Sevan, with an average height of 1982 meters above sea level. Located 98 kilometers east of the capital Yerevan, the town had a population of 20,765 as per the 2011 census. As per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Gavar is 19,500. Gavar is the seat of the Diocese of Gegharkounik of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The Nor Bayazet or Novobayazet uezd was a county (uezd) of the Erivan Governorate of the Caucasus Viceroyalty of the Russian Empire. The uezd bordered the Alexandropol uezd to the north, the Etchmiadzin and Erivan uezds to the west, the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd to the south, and the Kazakh, Elizavetpol, and Jevanshir uezds of the Elizavetpol Governorate to the east. Centered on Lake Sevan, the Nor Bayazet uezd included most of the contemporary province of Gegharkunik and northern parts of the Kotayk Province of Armenia. The administrative center of the uezd was the city Novobayazet (present-day Gavar) for which the district was eponymously named. In 1916, the district was over 90% rural and home to over 129,300 Armenians and 53,700 Muslims (including 3,000 Kurds). Resulting from the Ottoman invasion of the South Caucasus, in 1918–1920 the population of the district contracted significantly due to famine and large-scale ethnic cleansing.

Gavar State University (GSU) (Armenian: Գավառի Պետական Համալսարան) is a university in Gavar, Gegharkunik Province, Armenia. Founded on 5 May 1993, it is the largest university in the Gegharkunik Province with 4 faculties. The University provides degrees in Philology, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Economics. Currently, more than 2,400 students are attending the university. Currently, the rector of the university is the founder Dr. professor Hrant Hakobyan.

Artsvakar (formerly, Ghshlakh), is former village and currently a neighbourhood within the town of Gavar, the capital of Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. It is home to an Iron Age fortress, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC.

Karmirgyugh (Armenian: Կարմիրգյուղ, lit. 'Red Village') is a village in the Gavar Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia.

Noratus cemetery (Armenian: Նորատուսի գերեզմանատուն), also spelled Noraduz, is a medieval cemetery with many early khachkars (carved memorial stones) located in the village of Noratus in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia, near Gavar and Lake Sevan, 90 km north of Yerevan. The cemetery has the largest cluster of khachkars in Armenia. It is currently the largest surviving cemetery with khachkars following the destruction of the khachkars in Old Julfa, Nakhichevan by the government of Azerbaijan.

Noratus (Armenian: Նորատուս) is a village in the Gavar Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia, near the town of Gavar. The village has a rich historical past, and is famous for the Noratus cemetery, the largest surviving cemetery in the world featuring khachkars.

Hayravank (Armenian: Հայրավանք) is a 9th to 12th century Armenian monastery located just northeast of the village of Hayravank along the southwest shores of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. The monastic complex consists of a church, chapel, and gavit. Surrounding the monastery are numerous khachkars and gravestones that are part of a small cemetery. To the northwest a short distance from the site, are the remains of Bronze Age through medieval fortification walls and foundations of a settlement. A polished black vessel of the Early Bronze Age was discovered during archaeological excavations in the area. Weapons of metal and stone, tools, clay idols, numerous vessels, fireplaces and two tombs, all from the Iron Age were discovered in the vicinity as well.

Akob Aghi khachkar (Armenian: Ակոբ Աղի խաչքար) is a khachkar located just northeast of the village of Hayravank along the southwest shores of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. It lies in front of the western wall of the Hayravank Monastery complex, on the pedestal; the upper left corner is broken. It is included in the state list of immovable monuments of history and culture of Armenia (5.59/1.1.3.5)։ The khachkar was created by Akob, a 16th-century Armenian sculptor, maker of khachkars and tombstones.

Hayravank (Armenian: Հայրավանք) is a village in the Gavar Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. The village is the site of the 9th-century Hayravank Monastery.

Berdkunk (Armenian: Բերդկունք) is a village in the Gavar Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia.

Gegharkunik (Armenian: Գեղարքունիք, Armenian pronunciation: [ɡɛʁɑɾkʰuˈnikʰ] ) is a province (marz) of Armenia. Its capital and largest city is Gavar. Gegharkunik is inhabited by approximately 209,669 people and the majority are ethnic Armenians. Gegharkunik Province is located at the eastern part of Armenia, bordering Azerbaijan. It includes the exclave of Artsvashen, which has been under Azerbaijani occupation since the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. With an area of 5,348 km2 (2,065 sq mi), Gegharkunik is the largest province in Armenia. However, approximately 24% or 1,278 km2 (493 sq mi) of its territory is covered by Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the South Caucasus and a major tourist attraction of the region. The Yerevan-Sevan-Dilijan republican highway runs through the province.
