1989 Open Championship

The 1986 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 115th Open Championship, held from 17 to 20 July at Turnberry Golf Resort, Scotland. Aided by a 63 in the second round, Greg Norman won his first major championship at even-par, five strokes ahead of runner-up Gordon J. Brand.It was the second Open at Turnberry, the first was in 1977, the famous "Duel in the Sun" between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. The winning score that year was a record-breaking 268 (−12), twelve strokes lower than Norman's even-par 280 in 1986. Introduced in 1968, the second cut (at 54 holes) was discontinued after 1985. Also changed in 1986 was the playoff format, to a four-hole aggregate immediately following the final round, rather than 18 holes the following day (and 36 holes prior to 1964). The new playoff was first used three years later in 1989.

The 2002 Women's British Open was held 8–11 August at the Ailsa Course at Turnberry Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the 26th edition of the Women's British Open, and the second as a major championship on the LPGA Tour. ESPN, ABC Sports and BBC Sport televised the event in the United States and United Kingdom. Karrie Webb won the sixth of her seven major titles, two strokes ahead of runners-up Michelle Ellis and Paula Martí. Three strokes back after 54 holes, Webb shot a final round 66 (−6) to capture her fifth different major for a career "Super Slam." It was her third victory at the Women's British Open, with previous titles in 1995 and 1997.Defending champion Se-Ri Pak finished six strokes back, in a tie for eleventh place.

The 1977 Open Championship was the 106th Open Championship, held 6–9 July on the Ailsa Course at Turnberry, Scotland. Tom Watson won the second of his five Open titles by one stroke over runner-up Jack Nicklaus. The two played together in the final two rounds and had separated themselves from the field under clear skies, leading this Open to be remembered as the "Duel in the Sun." This was the first Open held at Turnberry, which renamed its 18th hole after the duel. Three months earlier, Watson had held off Nicklaus to win his first green jacket at the Masters. In the second round, Mark Hayes rebounded from his opening 76 (+6) with 63 to establish a new single round record at The Open Championship by two strokes. The previous record of 65 was set by Henry Cotton in the second round in 1934 at Royal St. George's and later equaled by nine others. Lightning briefly interrupted play in the third round on Friday.Americans dominated the final leaderboard, filling the top eight spots and eleven of the first twelve. The first page of the leaderboard was loaded with future members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. The leader after 36 holes, Roger Maltbie, finished with 80 for 289 (+9), in a tie for 26th place. The previous year, Watson was defending champion, but missed the 54-hole cut after an 80 in the third round, while Nicklaus finished in a tie for second.

The 2009 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 138th Open Championship, held from 16–19 July at the Ailsa Course of the Turnberry Resort, in Ayrshire, Scotland. Stewart Cink won his only major championship after a four-hole playoff with Tom Watson. At age 59, Watson had the chance to win his sixth Open and become the oldest major champion in history during regulation play, but was unable to par the final hole and tied with Cink.It was the fourth Open at Turnberry; the previous winners were Watson (1977), Greg Norman (1986), and Nick Price (1994).

The 1994 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 123rd Open Championship, held from 14 to 17 July at Turnberry Golf Resort, Scotland. Nick Price won the second of his three major championships and only Claret Jug, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jesper Parnevik. Price was three-under over the final three holes and posted 66 (−4), while Parnevik, in the group ahead, bogeyed the 72nd hole to miss a playoff. It was the first of two consecutive majors for Price, who won his second PGA Championship a month later.

The 2012 Senior Open Championship was a senior major golf championship and the 26th Senior Open Championship, held on 26–29 July at Turnberry Golf Resort in South Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. It was the 10th Senior Open Championship played as a senior major championship.Fred Couples won two strokes ahead of Gary Hallberg. It was Couples's second senior major championship victory.

The 2003 Senior British Open was a senior major golf championship and the 17th Senior British Open, held from 24–27 July at Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the 5th Senior British Open played at the course and the first Senior British Open played as a senior major championship. Tom Watson defeated Carl Mason in a playoff to win his first Senior British Open title. The 2003 event was Watson's second senior major championship victory.

The 2015 Ricoh Women's British Open was played 30 July – 2 August at the Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the 39th Women's British Open, and the 15th as a major championship on the LPGA Tour. Inbee Park shot a final found 65 (−7) to win her first Women's British Open, three strokes ahead of compatriot Ko Jin-young, the 54-hole co-leader. It was Park's seventh major title and second of the season. This was the second Women's British Open at Turnberry, which previously hosted 13 years earlier in 2002. As in 2002, it was played at par 72, with two par fours (3, 14) as par fives. ESPN2 and BBC Sport televised the event in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Turnberry is a golf resort on the Firth of Clyde in Ayrshire, southwest Scotland. It comprises three links golf courses, a golf academy, a five-star James Miller-designed hotel from 1906, along with lodge and cottage accommodations. Turnberry was a popular golf course and resort from its inception, made accessible because of the Maidens and Dunure Light Railway. It closed in both World Wars for military use, and there was concern it would not open following World War II, but it was redesigned by Mackenzie Ross and re-opened in 1951. The course was the scene of the 1977 Open Championship, where Tom Watson scored a close victory over Jack Nicklaus. The property has been owned by the Trump Organization since 2014, who now brand the course Trump Turnberry.

The Battle of Turnberry was a battle fought in February 1307 during the Scottish Wars of Independence near Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. King Robert I of Scotland's invasion of his ancestral lands in Annandale and Carrick began in 1307. The Carrick invasion force was led by Robert, his brother Edward de Brus, James Douglas, Lord of Douglas and Robert Boyd. The force comprised thirty three galleys. They sailed to Turnberry and landed near Turnberry Castle. The invasion force quickly overwhelmed the English forces of Henry de Percy, 1st Baron Percy encamped around Turnberry Castle, but failed to take the castle. Henry de Percy was forced to leave the castle after this defeat.

Turnberry is a village 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Girvan, in the civil parish of Kirkoswald, in the council area of South Ayrshire, Scotland. It has a golf centre called Turnberry which has 3 courses. In 1991 it had a population of 149.

Turnberry railway station was a railway station serving the Turnberry Golf Course and its associated hotel, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The station was part of the Maidens and Dunure Light Railway.
