North Foreland

Sts Stephen's College was an educational establishment for girls run by the Community of St John Baptist, an Anglican convent of Augustinian nuns in Clewer (Windsor, Berkshire) from 1867. The college took gentlemen's daughters, clergymen's daughters (with a discount on fees), and student teachers.St Stephen's moved to Folkestone in 1919, and evacuated to Taplow during World War II. The buildings in Folkestone were eventually acquired by Folkestone School for Girls. After the war St Stephen's College was re-established in Broadstairs. It closed in 1991.

Kingsgate Castle on the cliffs above Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs, Kent, was built for Lord Holland (Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland) in the 1760s as the stable block of his nearby country residence Holland House. His main residence was Holland House in Kensington, near London. The name Kingsgate is related to an incidental landing of Charles II on 30 June 1683 (‘gate’ referring to a cliff gap) though other English monarchs have also used this cove, such as George II in 1748. The building was later the residence of John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury. The Castle became a fashionable hotel in the 1920s, and was then converted into 32 private flats in 1954.

Kingsgate is a hamlet in St Peter's parish, Broadstairs, Kent. The name Kingsgate is related to an incidental landing of Charles II on 30 June 1683 (‘gate’ referring to a cliff-gap) though other English monarchs have also used this cove, such as George II in 1748. Kingsgate is the location of Holland House built between 1762 and 1768 by Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland, of Holland House in Kensington, which was accessed from the beach through a stone arched gate originally named Barthelmas Gate and renamed later to Kings Gate. Holland House in Kent was sold by his third son Charles James Fox and in due course subdivided and further developed. On either end of the cliffs above Kingsgate Bay Lord Holland built what is now the Captain Digby Public House and Kingsgate Castle. This last was never a real castle and was one of several follies in the grounds of Holland House and, indeed its stable block, before further redevelopment, allowing it to become the residence of John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury.

Holland House, Kingsgate, in Kent, is a Georgian country house built between 1762 and 1768 as his retirement home by the politician Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland (1705-1774), of Holland House in Kensington. It is a Grade II listed building.The house is situated in a dip between two clifftops. It overlooks the sea at Kingsgate Bay, to the beach of which it had access through a stone arched gate originally named Bartholomew Gate (or Bart'lem Gate). The gate was later renamed King's Gate, as it was reputedly where King Charles II landed in 1683, during a storm, while on his way to Dover. On the change of its name by the King's command, the following Latin distich was composed by a Mr. Toddy of Josse, then proprietor of the land on which the gate stood; it was inscribed on a stone tablet on the gate's land-side: Translated:

Kingsgate Lifeboat Station was first located at the top of the cliffs at White Ness Gap, alongside the Neptune Tower, near the Captain Digby Inn, at Kingsgate in the county of Kent. A lifeboat station was established here in 1862 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) In 1883, the station was moved to a new boathouse, constructed at the top of the cliffs at the end of Botany Road, Botany Bay, Kingsgate. Kingsgate lifeboat station was closed in 1897.

Bleak House (originally known as Fort House) is a prominent house on the cliff overlooking the North Foreland and Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Kent. It was built around 1801 and then substantially extended, doubling in size, in 1901. The house was the site of the North Cliff Battery and was used as a coastal station for observing maritime activity.Charles Dickens holidayed at Fort House in the 1850s and 1860s, and wrote David Copperfield during his time there. He is also said to have penned out Bleak House whilst in residence, hence the change of name in the early 1900s. The house is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.

The Shrine of Our Ladye Star of the Sea was an old chapel on the cliffs at Broadstairs (which was formerly known as Bradstowe). Dating back at least to the 1350s, the two towers of the chapel were a major landmark for sailors in the area. Given the veneration in which the shrine was held, the custom developed of ships dipping their top-sails to salute the shrine as they sailed past it.The Chapel of St. Mary's structural remains are, as incorporated in the modern facade, situated on the site of what has been said also to be the oldest surviving building still standing in contemporary Broadstairs, and within its modern content is all that remains of the Medieval Shrine of "Our Lady of Bradstowe". It stands near the harbour on today's Albion Street, at the junction with Alexandra Road.

The Palace Cinema is an independent single-screen cinema in Broadstairs, Kent, England. Housed in a converted commercial building, it opened in 1965 as the Windsor Cinema, and was renamed the Palace in 2006. It now shows mainly independent films. The Grade II listed building is in Harbour Street, close to the beach at Viking Bay.

Broadstairs Lifeboat Station was a former lifeboat station in Kent, England. It was rather unusual, as it never had a boathouse, although a building was provided by the Harbour Commissioners in which to store all the equipment. The lifeboat was kept under a tarpaulin, and was stored on the pier at Broadstairs, a harbour town on the east coast of Kent. A lifeboat was first placed here in 1850, when one was presented to the town by former residents and lifeboat manufacturers Thomas and John White, now of Cowes. Management of the station was taken over by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1868. Broadstairs lifeboat station was closed in 1912.

Broadstairs is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about 80 miles (130 km) east of London. It is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St Peter's, and had a population in 2011 of about 25,000. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, Broadstairs is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the "jewel in Thanet's crown". The town's coat of arms' Latin motto is Stella Maris ("Star of the Sea"). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff's summit. The town spreads from Haine Road in the west to Kingsgate (named after the landing of King Charles II in 1683), a hamlet in St Peter parish in the north, and to Dumpton in the south (named after the yeoman Dudeman who farmed there in the 13th century). The hamlet of Reading (formerly Reden or Redyng) Street was established by Flemish refugees in the 17th century.

The Culmer White was a 19th-century lifeboat of the Isle of Thanet, Kent, England. With its sister boat, the Mary White, it took part in the rescue of the Northern Belle in January 1857. The Belle was an American transatlantic ship which ran aground near Thanet in blizzard conditions. Both the Culmer White and the Mary White made repeated trips to the damaged Belle and saved the entire crew.

The Mary White was a lifeboat based in Broadstairs, Kent, England, named in 1851 after the completion of an heroic rescue of a brig, the Mary White. The Mary White with its sister boat, the Culmer White, took part in the rescue of the Northern Belle in January 1857. The Belle was an American transatlantic ship which ran aground near Thanet in blizzard conditions. The Culmer White and the Mary White made repeated trips to the damaged Belle and saved the entire crew.
