Shaftesbury Square is in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the southern end of Great Victoria Street and Dublin road, with the adjoining streets of Lisburn Road and the Donegall Road converging at this junction. It is in the area commonly known as the Golden Mile. The square was named after the Earl of Shaftesbury.Lord Shaftesbury was Lord Lieutenant of Belfast from 1904 to 1911 and Lord Lieutenant of Dorset from 1916 to 1952. He was also Lord Mayor of Belfast 1907 and Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast 1909–1923. Located nearby is Botanic railway station along Botanic Avenue.

Elmwood Hall is a concert hall and former Presbyterian Church on University Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is situated opposite Queen's University Belfast.

Botanic railway station serves the Botanic area in south Belfast, Northern Ireland and students for Queen's University Belfast; it is also near Shaftesbury Square which is along Botanic Avenue. It is named after the nearby Belfast Botanic Gardens. It is one of the four stations located in the city centre, the others being City Hospital, Great Victoria Street, and Lanyon Place. The station opened on 26 April 1976 and is very close to City Hospital StationPassengers can alight here for the Ulster Museum, which is situated on the edge of Botanic Gardens.

The Brian Friel Theatre is a studio theatre located at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was opened in February 2009 and is named after the Irish playwright, theatre director and author, Brian Friel.The Theatre is part of the University's School of Languages, Literature and Performing Arts and the Brian Friel Centre for Theatre Research. It provides space for student drama teaching, rehearsals and performances and hosts both student and professional performances and events such as the Belfast International Arts Festival. The Brian Friel Theatre is located on University Square and shares its building with the Queen's Film Theatre.

The Queen's Film Theatre or QFT is an independent cinema at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland founded in 1968. When first opened, the Queen’s Film Theatre focused mainly on art house, indie and world cinema, playing an important role in the cultural life of Belfast, serving as an important venue for events such as the Belfast Festival at Queen's, the Belfast Film Festival and the CineMagic Festival. The QFT is located on University Square and shares the building with the Brian Friel Theatre opened in February 2009 and used for student drama teaching, rehearsals and performances. The cinema has two screens with 204 and 91 seats respectively and is also the only cinema in Northern Ireland to have a licensed bar. The QFT is part of the Europa Cinemas network containing more than 1,000 cinemas in 60 countries.

The Naughton Gallery at Queen's, also known as The Naughton Gallery, is an art gallery and museum at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Opened in 2001, the gallery is named after its benefactors, Martin and Carmel Naughton, who donated £500,000 to the university in 2002. Located on the first floor of the Queen's University's Lanyon building, the gallery displays six exhibitions per year presenting local and international contemporary artists. Among the talks and events organised in conjunction with the exhibitions, the Naughton Gallery occasionally organises screenings with the Queen's Film Theatre, which is also a cultural institution under the auspices of Queen's University.

Shine is a club night located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The club was started in 1993 by local DJ Alan Simms, first as A Different Drum at the Limelight before moving to the Mandela hall, part of Queen's University Students' Union, where it became Shine in 1995. At the clubs peak of popularity in the early 2000s, the entire Students' Union was used over multiple rooms. 'Super Shine' nights brought the clubs capacity to its thousands and hosted several high profile DJs and acts in the one evening. The club had no formal music policy, but techno was prevalent on most nights. DJs and live acts that have played in Shine include Soulwax, Carl Cox, Green Velvet, David Holmes, Deep Dish, Darren Emerson, Richie Hawtin, Adam Freeland, Deep Dish, Layo and Bushwacka!, Audio Bullys, Felix da House Cat, Welt, Andrew Weatherall, Laurent Garnier, Groove Armada, Vitalic, Slam, Rigsy, Dave Clarke and Fergie. Phil Kieran was a former resident and regular guest at the club. BBC Radio 1 has held events at Shine in the past with Pete Tong and, unusually, Tim Westwood appearing in the main room. Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac worked at the club while attending Queen's. Starting in PR and promotions, working at the club was inspiration to buy her first set of decks. The promoters provided a regular roster of local dj’s too. In 2006 Shine events became less frequent, operating instead on a monthly schedule. The club also had a record label called Shine Recordings. The label was founded by Alan Simms, Phil Donaldson and Gary Dillon. Releases on the label included tracks by Jon Carter, Simms & Welt and Justin Robertson, who also played the club regularly. In 2005 Simms & Donaldson opened another club in the city, The Stiff Kitten. The name derives from Joy Division's original name. In November 2009, The Stiff Kitten underwent a name change and is now called 'The Kitten Bar'. The front bar was renovated to increase seating capacity. The Stiff Kitten has since closed from summer 2014. The final Shine at Mandela Hall took place on Saturday 28 July 2018.

Shaftesbury Square Hospital was a health facility in Great Victoria Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was managed by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

The Queen's University of Belfast, commonly known as Queen's University Belfast (Irish: Ollscoil na Banríona; abbreviated Queen's or QUB), is a public research university in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The university received its charter in 1845 as "Queen's College, Belfast", and opened four years later. Queen's offers approximately 300 academic degree programmes at various levels. The current president and vice-chancellor is Ian Greer. The annual income of the institution for 2022–23 was £462.8 million, of which £103.1 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £466.5 million.Queen's is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, Universities UK and Universities Ireland. The university is associated with two Nobel laureates and one Turing Award laureate.

Queen's Students' Union (QSU) is the official representative body for students at Queen's University Belfast. Membership of the union is automatic and currently totals 24,560, making it one of the largest unions on the island of Ireland and in the United Kingdom. The Students' Union derives its existence and authority from the University's Statutes, and so is not entirely independent of it. Therefore, it must have amendments to its constitution approved by the University Senate. It aims to represent students' interests both with the university and the wider community, to create a sense of student spirit and provide services that aid its student members during their time at Queen's. The Students' Union can trace its origins to the nineteenth century, and has been based on University Road, directly opposite the University's main 'Lanyon Building', since it opened in 1967.

The Golden Mile is the name given to the stretch of Dublin Road, Great Victoria Street, Bradbury Place and University Road between the City Hall and the university area in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Both the Crown Liquor Saloon and the Grand Opera House are on this stretch of road, as are a large number of pubs, bars and restaurants. The area is flanked on either side by working class areas. Donegall Road and Sandy Row lie to the west and Donegall Pass to the east. The area contains around 80% of the city centre's bars, clubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres with the Cathedral Quarter and Laganside also popular.

The Aurora building was a proposed construction project that was not granted planning permission. If built at the proposed height of 109 metres, 37 storeys, it would have been the tallest building on the island of Ireland. The proposed location of the Belfast tower was on the corner of Great Victoria and Ventry Street (the site formerly home to the city centre's last petrol station). Great Victoria Street also fronts other notable buildings in Belfast such as the Grand Opera House, the Europa Hotel and The Crown Liquor Saloon.The development was proposed to contain almost 300 apartments and 7,000 square feet (700 m2) of commercial space. The contractors involved in the development were McAlister Holdings, Strategic Planning and HKR Architects.Planning permission was refused, and a subsequent appeal was withdrawn in February 2011. A receiver was appointed to the Aurora site on the instruction of Anglo Irish Bank on 27 January 2011, the same day it placed two other McAlister sites into receivership. Those two sites, at Greenhall Highway in Coleraine and Dunlady Road in Dundonald, were the property of McAlister Construction Ltd.
