The 2011 United States Open Championship was the 111th U.S. Open, played June 16–19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb northwest of Washington, D.C. Rory McIlroy won his first major title, eight strokes ahead of Jason Day. He set eleven U.S. Open records on the weekend, including the lowest total 72-hole score (268) and the lowest total under par (−16). McIlroy and Robert Garrigus became the fifth and sixth in U.S. Open history to score under par in all four rounds.

The 1976 PGA Championship was the 58th PGA Championship, played August 12–16 at Congressional Country Club (Blue Course) in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb northwest of Washington, D.C. Held six weeks following the United States Bicentennial, it was the second major at Congressional; the U.S. Open was conducted twelve years earlier in 1964. Dave Stockton, the 1970 champion, sank a 15-foot (5 m) putt to save par on the 72nd hole to win his second PGA Championship, one stroke ahead of runners-up Raymond Floyd and Don January. The final round was delayed to Monday for the first time, due to weather. Stockton's final putt averted the first sudden-death playoff in major championship history, which came a year later at the 1977 PGA Championship. Defending champion Jack Nicklaus shot a final round 74 (+4) and finished two strokes back, in a tie for fourth. Third round leader Charles Coody shot 77 and fell into a tie for eighth.

Congressional Country Club is a country club and golf course in Bethesda, Maryland, United States. Congressional opened in 1924 and its Blue Course has hosted five major championships, including three U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship. It was a biennial stop on the PGA Tour, with the Quicken Loans National hosted by Tiger Woods until 2020. Previously, Congressional hosted the former Kemper Open until its move to nearby TPC at Avenel in 1987. Congressional hosted its third U.S. Open in 2011. Tournament winners at Congressional have included Rory McIlroy, Ken Venturi, Ernie Els, Justin Rose and Tiger Woods, among many others. Congressional is generally considered one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world.

Carderock Springs Historic District is a national historic district located at Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland. The district encompasses 275 modernist houses located northwest of Bethesda. It was developed between 1962 and 1966, and was planned to take full advantage of the existing landscape and topography, with curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs serving wooded, sloping properties.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Connelly School of the Holy Child is a Catholic, independent, college-preparatory school for girls, grades 6-12 located in Potomac, Maryland. It is operated independently in the Archdiocese of Washington, and is a member of the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington and the Association of Independent Maryland Schools.

The Robert Llewellyn Wright House is a historic home located at 7927 Deepwell Drive in Bethesda, Maryland. It is an 1800-square foot two-story concrete-block structure designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1953, and constructed in 1957 for his sixth child, Robert Llewellyn Wright (1903–86), who worked at the Justice Department.The Usonian house was designed using intersecting and concentric segments of a circle, or "hemicycles". Initial designs were scrapped after the construction was too costly.The house can be seen from Deepwell Drive on a sloping lot that overlooks a stream. It is also visible from the Cabin John Stream Valley Trail, which follows the Cabin John Creek below it. In 1960, the grounds were landscaped by Lloyd Wright, brother of the client, and the son of the architect. As of 2010, the house was inhabited by Tom Wright, grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright, and a volcano specialist.It is one of only two Wright-designed structures in Maryland; the other is the Joseph Euchtman House in Baltimore County.

Rock Run is a tributary stream of the Potomac River in Montgomery County, Maryland. The headwaters of the stream rise in the village of Potomac, and the creek flows southeast for 5.3 miles (8.5 km) to the Potomac River. A portion of the stream runs through Rock Run Stream Valley Park, an undeveloped park that is part of the Montgomery County MD park system.

Mater Dei is an elementary school for boys grades 1 through 8, conducted by Catholic laymen, in Bethesda, Maryland.

The David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) is one of the largest ship model basins—test facilities for the development of ship design—in the world. DTMB is a field activity of the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

The American Legion Memorial Bridge, also known as the American Legion Bridge and formerly as the Cabin John Bridge, is a bridge carrying Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) across the Potomac River between Montgomery County, Maryland and Fairfax County, Virginia in the United States. It is an American Water Landmark. Plummers Island is located immediately downstream of the bridge. The bridge has five traffic lanes in each direction. The outermost lane in each direction is an entrance/exit-only lane for traffic to/from the Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland and the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Georgetown Pike (State Route 193) in Virginia. There are no facilities for pedestrians or cyclists, which are prohibited.
