Newport Historic District (Rhode Island)

The Ezra Stiles House is an historic house at 14 Clarke Street in Newport, Rhode Island. It is a large 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a gambrel roof and two large interior brick chimneys, built in 1756. Originally built facing south, the house was rotated on its lot to face west in 1834, at which time its entry was given a Greek Revival surround.The house was home from the time of its construction to Rev. Ezra Stiles, later president of Yale University. Stiles lived in the house while serving as a minister for 20 years at the Second Congregational Church on Clarke Street. Stiles owned a slave boy that he acquired through an investment in a slaving expedition. Stiles freed his slave when he left Newport to serve at Yale in 1777. Stiles House is currently a private residence and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Newport Restoration Foundation was founded by Doris Duke in 1968 in Newport, Rhode Island to preserve early housing stock including 18th century colonial homes. Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was the foundation's vice president.It is the largest collection of vernacular architecture in the Northeastern United States. In the 1960s, structures in Newport were threatened by redevelopment. Doris Duke purchased and restored over 83 individual houses under her direction. The entire project represents one of the largest preservation efforts undertaken in modern times and is currently led by Executive Director, Mark Thompson.

Washington Square is the geographical and historical heart of Newport Rhode Island. More trapezoid than square, it exists at the intersection of several major streets and what was the colonial long wharf, projecting into the harbor off Aquidneck Island and into Narragansett Bay. Although as a civic space it is colonial in origin, dating back to the first settlement of 1639, much of its present shape, form and name dates from the 19th century while a number of its most prominent buildings are of early 20th century design. Like many civic spaces, it developed over time rather than being imposed by design.

The Joseph Rogers House (also known as "Robert Rogers House") is an historic house at 37 Touro Street, facing Washington Square in Newport, Rhode Island. It is a three-story wood-frame structure with a hip roof. Its main facade is five bays wide, with a center entry framed by pilasters and topped by a fanlight. The house was built c. 1790 by Joseph Rogers, a merchant. It remained in private hands until the 1890s, when it was adapted for use first as a convent, and then as a parochial school, by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence. It was given to the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1961, and Dr. and Mrs. David Van Pelt restored the building for the Society, which used it as its headquarters. The Society moved its headquarters to 424 Bellevue Avenue in 1992. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Oliver Perry Monument is a bronze statue, by William Greene Turner, dedicated to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. It is located in Eisenhower Park in Newport, RI, between Washington Square and Touro street. The statue faces west towards Newport Harbor. The inscription reads: The statue was dedicated 10 September 1885, the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie. The monument is described as Full-length standing portrait of Oliver H. Perry, seen in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, just as he mounted the deck of the Niagara, after the dismantling of his own ship, the Lawrence, and after he rowed across the lake in enemy fire. His proper right arm is extended in a gesture of command; the flag from Lawrence is draped around his proper left arm. At the foot of the monument is a block and coil of rope.

The Army and Navy YMCA is a historic YMCA building at 50 Washington Square in Newport, Rhode Island. It is a five-story concrete, masonry, and brick building, designed by Louis E. Jallade and erected in 1911 by the Norcross Brothers. It occupies a small, irregularly-shaped city block at the upper end of Washington Square, Newport's historic civic center. The building was constructed in a Beaux Arts style, with limestone finish predominating on the main facades, with some terra cotta paneling. Mrs. Thomas Emery, a philanthropist from Cincinnati, Ohio, funded its construction to provide services for Navy members when Newport was a major center of the United States Navy. YMCA closed after the Navy significantly reduced its presence in Newport in 1973. The building now serves as low income (section 8) housing. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Although it is within the boundaries of the Newport Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, it does not contribute to its significance, which has a cutoff date of 1820.

The Clarke Street Meeting House (also known as the Second Congregational Church Newport County or Central Baptist Church) is a historic meeting house and Reformed Christian church building at 13-17 Clarke Street in Newport, Rhode Island, built in 1735. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Newport Artillery Company of Newport, Rhode Island was chartered in 1741 by the Rhode Island General Assembly during the reign of King George II of Great Britain. It is the oldest military unit in the United States operating under its original charter, and the company maintains a museum in its historic armory. The company has served in wars ranging from the French and Indian War to the First World War. Individual members of the Company have served in every war fought by the United States.

The Old Colony House, also known as Old State House or Newport Colony House, is located at the east end of Washington Square in the city of Newport, Rhode Island, United States. It is a brick Georgian-style building completed in 1741, and was the meeting place for the colonial legislature. From independence in 1776 to the early 20th century, the state legislature alternated its sessions between here and the Rhode Island State House in Providence. The building has received little alteration since its construction. As one of the best-maintained surviving Georgian public buildings in the United States from the colonial era, it was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1960. It is also a contributing property to the Newport Historic District, later designated an NHL itself. The building is still owned by the state, but managed as a museum by the Newport Historical Society. Besides its political and architectural importance, the building was the site of many important Revolutionary events in Rhode Island. George Washington and Dwight Eisenhower have both been guests at the building. It has been used as a barracks, hospital, courthouse and a location for a Steven Spielberg film.

Governor Peleg Sanford House is one of the oldest houses in Rhode Island, possibly dating to the 1640s and certainly before the death of Peleg Sanford in 1701. The building is located at 2-6 Broadway in Newport, Rhode Island, and "Newport's most important surviving seventeenth-century buildings are found in the West Broadway Neighborhood." Local historians claim: "the original part of the building was the home of Peleg Sanford, Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island between 1680 and 1683. He built this house sometime before his death in 1701, probably as early as the 1640s. By 1827, the building had been modified to include a storefront, reflecting Broadway's change from a residential to a commercial area. The building was enlarged again in 1845, and a mix of Greek Revival and Colonial elements were added. Many Newporters remember the store as "Lalli's" for the family that operated a variety store and stand in this building for 63 years. In 1923, P. Joseph Lalli bought the tobacco store located here and members of the Lalli family ran the store until 1986." In 2000 the Newport Historical Society awarded the building its Historic Preservation Award in 2000.

The Wanton–Lyman–Hazard House is the oldest house in Newport, Rhode Island, built around 1697. It is also one of the oldest houses in the state. It is located at the corner of Broadway and Stone Street, in the downtown section of the city in the Newport Historic District. The house "was damaged by Stamp Act riots in 1765 when occupied by a Tory Stampmaster."The house has passed through several owners since its construction and has been renovated and improved by some of them. The three for whom it is named were not the first, but they were members of a family related by marriage that owned it from shortly before the Revolution to 1911. Since the 1920s, it has been owned by the Newport Historical Society (NHS) which renovated it and converted it to a historic house museum. In 1960, it was among the first National Historic Landmarks designated by the Department of the Interior.

The White Horse Tavern was constructed before 1673 and is believed to be the oldest tavern building in the United States. It is located on the corner of Farewell and Marlborough streets in Newport, Rhode Island.
