Lower Hutt (Māori: Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai) is a city in the Wellington Region of New Zealand. Administered by the Hutt City Council, it is one of the four cities that constitute the Wellington metropolitan area. If considered a city it is New Zealand's sixth most populous, with a population of 114,000. The total area administered by the council is 376.4 km2 (145 sq mi) around the lower half of the Hutt Valley and along the eastern shores of Wellington Harbour, of which 78.53 km2 (30 sq mi) is urban. It is separated from the city of Wellington by the harbour, and from Upper Hutt by the Taita Gorge. Lower Hutt is unique among New Zealand cities, as the name of the council does not match the name of the city it governs. Special legislation has since 1991 given the council the name "Hutt City Council", while the name of the place itself remains "Lower Hutt City". This name has led to confusion, as Upper Hutt is administered by a separate city council, the Upper Hutt City Council. The entire Hutt Valley includes both Lower and Upper Hutt cities. Lower Hutt is also often simply called "the Hutt".

Hutt Intermediate School (HIS) is a state intermediate school located in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The school was founded in 1948, and currently has a total number of 685 students and a teaching staff of 45. The principal, until the end of 2006, was Neil Withington. He was the principal of Hutt Intermediate School for six years, and has left to take up a position at Victoria University of Wellington. Mike Gillatt has taken up the position since.

The Hutt Valley Line is the electrified train service operated by Transdev Wellington on behalf of Metlink on the section of the Wairarapa Line railway between Wellington and Upper Hutt, New Zealand.

St Bernard's College (often abbreviated to SBC or SBC183) is a Catholic year 7 to 13 (form 1 to 7) secondary school for boys located at 183 Waterloo Rd, Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. The school was opened by the Marist Brothers in 1946. The maximum roll is 680 pupils.

Lower Hutt Central Fire Station is a former fire station in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. When it was built in 1955 it was considered to be one of the most modern fire stations in the southern hemisphere.The fire station is strongly influenced by the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It was designed to represent a post war, modern city, with expanding industry and state housing projects.The building along with the Lower Hutt town hall, civic administration building and war memorial library saw the city become a symbol of post-war modernist construction during the 1950s.When the station first opened it included such features as a control room where the fire engines could be started and stopped remotely, and the appliance doors could open automatically. It was the first fire station in New Zealand to have the technology to record calls.In the mid-2000s, the New Zealand Fire Service reviewed its coverage of Lower Hutt. On 15 January 2007, the station closed along with fire stations at Petone and Point Howard, with crews and engines split between three new stations at Alicetown, Avalon and Seaview. These three career stations are backed up by volunteer brigades at Stokes Valley, Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. Since then, the building has been unoccupied and suffered from vandalism. In 2010 the station was officially protected from demolition by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (since renamed to Heritage New Zealand).The station was purchased by property developer Mike Friday in November 2015, who is planning to renovate the station into apartments.

Chilton Saint James School is a private single-sex girls composite school located in central Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The school was founded in 1918 by Geraldine FitzGerald, and was a combined day and boarding school until the dormitories closed in the late 1970s. Chilton St James has a roll of 263 students from Years 1 to 13 (ages 5 to 18) as of April 2023. The school also has a co-educational preschool for boys and girls from the age of 2. In 2018 Chilton introduced the Cambridge curriculum. Alongside this change they open the Chilton Ballet Academy (CBA), a co-ed dance training school that prepares young dancers to break into the industry. In 2020, the school also opened the Co-ed Chilton Music School (CMS) as a musical program to help prepare students who want to go into the music industry. The school runs the Chilton Dance Centre, which provides afterschool dance lessons and training in classical ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, tap, musical theatre dance and pilates to students from Preschool to Adults.

Waiwhetū is an eastern suburb of Lower Hutt in the Wellington Region situated in the south of the North Island of New Zealand.

The Waiwhetū Stream is a small watercourse in Lower Hutt, in the North Island of New Zealand. The stream drains the eastern side of the Hutt Valley, and enters Wellington Harbour at the Hutt River estuary. Development and urbanisation of the Hutt Valley since the arrival of settlers led to increasing pollution and degradation of the stream environment. The stream was diverted into concrete culverts in some sections in an attempt to reduce flooding. Industrial development in the area around the lower reaches of the stream led to that section becoming an industrial sewer. Discharges of industrial waste into the lower reaches ceased in the 1980s when trade wastes were connected to piped sewer mains. However, the stream remained highly polluted with toxic sediments. In 2010, the stream was described as one of the most polluted waterways in New Zealand. Pressure from the community beginning around 2003 helped to trigger a major project to clean up the lower reaches. This project was declared complete in June 2010, after the removal of 56,000 tonnes of toxic waste. In 2010–2011, a community group was formed to lead restoration of the upper reaches of the stream. Over a period of 10 years, volunteers cleared invasive aquatic weeds and rubbish from six kilometres (3.7 mi) of the stream bed and established around 34,000 locally sourced native plants on the banks of the stream.

Waterloo is an eastern suburb of Lower Hutt, Wellington. It is named after the Battle of Waterloo won by the Duke of Wellington in 1815.The Hutt City Council formally defines Waterloo as the area bounded by Waterloo Road and Burnside Street in the north, the Hutt Valley railway line in the west, Guthrie Street in the south, and the Wainuiomata hills in the east.It is the home suburb to Waterloo Primary School and the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. It is also home to Waterloo Interchange, a major train and bus station.

Te Whiti Park is a cricket ground in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand.

Sacred Heart College is a state-integrated single-sex girls' Catholic secondary school located in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It was established in 1912 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions and was the first secondary school to be opened in the Hutt Valley. It was originally sited in high street on the property known as Margaret street. In 1957 the school was shifted to the existing site on Laings Road. In May 1980 it became the first Catholic secondary school to be integrated under the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act 1975. The school has six house groups: Lisieux (Pink), Avila (Red), Aubert (Green), Lourdes (Light Blue), Barbier (Dark Blue) and Siena (Yellow). Due to having earthquake prone buildings the school strengthened its largest building in early 2017 and demolished its tallest in December 2017.

Queensgate Shopping Centre (formerly Westfield Queensgate) is a medium sized shopping centre in central Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. The centre first opened in 1986, and underwent a large scale redevelopment that was completed in August 2006. The centre features over 130 speciality stores.
