Catharine Creek

Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,714 at the time of the 2020 census. A waterfall at the end of West Main Street gives the village its name. The name "Montour" is derived from Queen Catharine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca Indian heritage who lived at the village site in the 18th century. The boundaries defining the Village of Montour Falls occur mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part lies within the Town of Dix. The village is located approximately twenty miles north of Elmira, New York and three miles south of Watkins Glen, New York. The New York State Academy of Fire Science is located in the village.

Montour Falls Historic District is a national historic district located at Montour Falls in Schuyler County, New York. The district includes 24 mid- and late-19th century structures. The visual focus of the district is known as the "Glorious T" around the intersection of Genesee and Main Streets. Notable structures include the Sheriff's Office, Schuyler County Clerk's Office, Montour Falls Village Hall, Montour Falls Memorial Library, and the Greek Revival style Ashton residence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Brick Tavern Stand, also known as Clawson House, is a historic inn and tavern located at Montour Falls in Schuyler County, New York. It was built in 1828 and is a two-story, five bay Federal style brick structure featuring a recessed entrance. Built originally as a tavern on the stagecoach lines of the Finger Lakes Region, it was later modified for use as Bethesda Sanitarium and operated by Dr. Charles Deland Clawson. In 1974, it became home to the Schuyler County Historical Society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 4, 1994.

Montour Falls Union Grammar School is a historic elementary school building located at Montour Falls in Schuyler County, New York. It was built in 1929, and is a two-story, T-shaped, Classical Revival style steel frame and brick building over a full basement. It features a Collegiate Gothic Tudor-arched opening flanked by buttresses and a stepped parapet. The school was closed in 1965, and has been rehabilitated into apartments and a day care.: 3, 12  In 1965, the property was subsequently taken over by the County and has been known as the Rural Urban Center, housing County offices until 2008. It has been lovingly restored to include eight residential units and professional spaces. Nevertheless, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Catherine's Town was a Seneca village, (Queanettquaga, or Sheoquago) named informally for a prominent Seneca woman, Catherine Montour. It was located at the south end of Seneca Lake, near present-day Watkins Glen (and the towns of Catharine and Montour, as well as the village of Montour Falls, all named for Catherine Montour) in what is now Schuyler County, New York. The Seneca leader Red Jacket was said to have practiced his speeches at Shequaga Falls, located nearby in the present-day Town of Montour Falls. According to "Historical Sketch of the Chemung Valley, Etc..," he was also buried there. Catherine's Town was destroyed by the Sullivan Expedition of 1779, one of more than 40 Iroquois villages decimated by the rebel colonial forces in retaliation for British-Iroquois raids in the eastern Mohawk Valley. At the time the town was reported to have 30 houses, fields of corn, and fruit orchards, all of which were burned, in addition to the people's winter stores of corn. Other names for the village during the colonial era were French Catherine Town, Catherine's Landing, Catherinestown, and Catharine Town, all after Montour. In the late 18th century, as new European-American settlers began to develop it, the village was known as Havana. It was later renamed as Montour Falls, New York. (There are both a village and the Town of Montour Falls.)

The Watkins Glen Public Library is a public library located in Watkins Glen, New York. Founded in 1870 as the Ladies' Library, the library migrated between different transitional spaces during its early history. In 1896, it was formally chartered as a school district public library. In 1940, it found a formal home on the second floor of the Watkins Glen Municipal Building. In 1956, the library's charter was extended to correspond with the Watkins Glen Central School District. However, this location was not easily accessible and the library moved for a street-accessible building constructed in 1987, where it remains to this day. The library is a member of the Southern Tier Library System.

Lee School is a historic one-room school building located at Montour in Schuyler County, New York. It is a one-room, one story, gable roofed frame building built in 1884. It served the town as Montour District #1 School until 1937. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Watkins Glen High School, also known as Watkins Glen Middle School, is a historic high school building located at Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York. It was built in 1929, and is a three-story, Classical Revival style brick school. It has an "H"-plan and features a broad pedimented portico with full height Doric order columns. A two-story addition was built in 1958. It was used as a high school until 1969, after which it housed a middle school. The school was closed in 2013, and is to be developed into senior housing, using the gymnasium and auditorium as community space.: 3, 16  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

The Schuyler County Courthouse Complex is a historic courthouse complex located on North Franklin Street between 9th and 10th Streets in Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York. It consists of a three-building government complex. The courthouse, built in 1855, is a two-story, rectangular brick building on a stone foundation. It features an inset square tower with an ogee roof and weather vane. It also has a small pedimented porch supported by Doric order columns. The Sheriff's residence is a two-story brick structure with a hipped roof and cupola. The third building is the one-story Clerk's office that measures 22 feet by 38 feet. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Watkins Glen State Park is in the village of Watkins Glen, south of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County in New York's Finger Lakes region. The park's lower part is near the village, while the upper part is open woodland. It was opened to the public in 1863 and was privately run as a tourist resort until 1906, when it was purchased by New York State. Initially known as Watkins Glen State Reservation, the park was first managed by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society before being turned over to full state control in 1911. Since 1924, it has been managed by the Finger Lakes Region of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The centerpiece of the 778-acre (3.15 km2) park is a 400-foot-deep (120 m) narrow gorge cut through rock by Glen Creek, a stream that was left hanging when glaciers of the Ice age deepened the Seneca valley, increasing the tributary stream gradient to create rapids and waterfalls wherever there were layers of hard rock. The area's rocks are sedimentary of Devonian age, part of a dissected plateau that was uplifted with little faulting or distortion. They consist mostly of soft shales, with some layers of harder sandstone and limestone. The park features three trails, open from mid-May to early November, by which one can climb or descend the gorge. The Southern Rim and Indian Trails run along the gorge's wooded rim, while the Gorge Trail is closest to the stream and runs over, under and along the park's 19 waterfalls by way of stone bridges and more than 800 stone steps. The trails connect to the Finger Lakes Trail, an 800-mile (1,300 km) system of trails within New York state.

First Baptist Church of Watkins Glen is a historic Baptist church located at Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York. It was built in 1888 and is a Victorian era religious building distinguished by a variety of vernacular Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne style inspired design and decorative detail. The brick structure rests on a raised stone foundation and features a large front corner tower. The architects were Pierce & Dockstader of Elmira. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
