Montgomery metropolitan area

Montgomery is the capital city of the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. Named for Continental Army Major General Richard Montgomery, it stands beside the Alabama River, on the coastal Plain of the Gulf of Mexico. In the 2020 census, Montgomery's population was 200,603. It is now the third most populous city in the state, after Mobile and Huntsville, and is the 119th most populous in the United States. The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area's population in 2020 was 386,047; it is the fourth largest in the state and 142nd among United States metropolitan areas.The city was incorporated in 1819 as a merger of two towns situated along the Alabama River. It became the state capital in 1846, representing the shift of power to the south-central area of Alabama with the growth of cotton as a commodity crop of the Black Belt and the rise of Mobile as a mercantile port on the Gulf Coast. In February 1861, Montgomery was chosen the first capital of the Confederate States of America, which it remained until the Confederate seat of government moved to Richmond, Virginia, in May of that year. In the middle of the 20th century, Montgomery was a major center of events and protests in the Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery bus boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches. In addition to housing many Alabama government agencies, Montgomery has a large military presence, due to Maxwell Air Force Base; public universities Alabama State University, Troy University (Montgomery campus), and Auburn University at Montgomery; two private post-secondary institutions, Faulkner University and Huntingdon College; high-tech manufacturing, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; and many cultural attractions, such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Two ships of the United States Navy have been named after the city, including USS Montgomery.Montgomery has also been recognized nationally for its downtown revitalization and new urbanism projects. It was one of the first cities in the nation to implement SmartCode Zoning.

Temple Beth Or (formerly Kahl Montgomery) is a historic reform Jewish congregation in Montgomery, Alabama.

Wheeler–Watkins Baseball Complex is a baseball venue in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. It is home to the Alabama State Hornets baseball team of the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference. The venue is named for two former Alabama State baseball coaches, Herbert Wheeler and Larry Watkins. Opened in March 2011, the facility has a capacity of 500 spectators.

The W.A. Gayle Planetarium is operated by Troy University for the city of Montgomery, Alabama. It provides public presentations and exhibits on astronomy, planetary science, and space exploration.

ASU Stadium is an American football stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, on the campus of Alabama State University that serves as the home field for the Alabama State Hornets football team. The stadium opened in 2012 and replaced the Cramton Bowl as the home of ASU football. ASU Stadium's inaugural game was played November 22, 2012, when it hosted the 89th Turkey Day Classic in which the Hornets hosted the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. The game, won by Tuskegee 27–25, was a sell-out and was televised nationally on ESPNU. The stadium's current capacity sits at 26,500 but the facility is designed to allow for future expansion that can increase the capacity to 55,000.

Ross-Clayton Funeral Home is the oldest African American funeral home in Montgomery, Alabama. Founded in 1918 by Robert Ambers Ross and William Clayton.

The Red Lady of Huntingdon College is a ghost said to haunt the former Pratt Hall dormitory at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. Her story is told in Huntingdon alumnus Kathryn Tucker Windham's book 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey.

Huntingdon College is a private Methodist college in Montgomery, Alabama. It was founded in 1854 as a women's college.

The Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum is a historic house museum in Montgomery, Alabama where writers F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda Fitzgerald lived from 1931 to 1932. The large Craftsman-style house was the last home where the Fitzgerald family lived together. During their stay, Scott worked on his novel, Tender is the Night (1934) and Zelda began writing Save Me the Waltz (1932). After the Fitzgeralds relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1932, the house was turned into apartments. The McPhillips family of Montgomery saved the home from being destroyed in 1986 by purchasing the property and establishing the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.

The Dunn–Oliver Acadome is a 7,400-seat multi-purpose arena in Montgomery, Alabama. Opened in 1992, it is home to the Alabama State Hornets basketball team of Alabama State University. From its opening until May 2008, it was named the Joe L. Reed Acadome, after Joe L. Reed, who played a significant, high-profile leadership role at ASU. In 2008, the Alabama State Board of Trustees voted to remove Reed's name from the building, based upon claims that Reed gave the university negative publicity and wasted taxpayer money by filing too many frivolous lawsuits. The trustees renamed the court in honor of the university's two most successful basketball coaches, Charles Johnson "C.J." Dunn and James V. Oliver. This furthered a debate between members of the board and Reed's supporters. In the 2009 legislative session, two legislators filed bills to restore Reed's name to the building, but both were withdrawn.

WVAS (90.7 FM) is a jazz-music formatted radio station in the Montgomery, Alabama, market licensed to the Alabama State University. WVAS is a member-supported non-commercial, educational station featuring news and other programming from National Public Radio and Public Radio Exchange. National programming produced by WVAS includes Café Jazz, distributed nationally by the African-American Public Radio Consortium.WVAS began broadcasting on June 15, 1984, from the fifth floor of the Levi Watkins Learning Center. Two years later, the station moved to its current location at Thomas Kilby Hall. Broadcasting from its transmitter on campus, WVAS has a signal that spans 18 counties, reaching a total population of more than 651,000. In September 2007, WVAS received a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to assist in its conversion from analog to digital broadcasting. WVAS was one of just two radio stations in Alabama to receive such a grant.

Alabama State University (ASU, Bama State, or Alabama State) is a public historically black university in Montgomery, Alabama. Founded in 1867, during the Reconstruction era, it was one of about 180 "normal schools" established by state governments in the 19th century to train teachers for the rapidly growing public common schools. It was one of 23 established to train African Americans to teach in segregated schools. Some of the 180 closed but most steadily expanded their role and became state colleges in the early 20th century and state universities in the late 20th century. ASU is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
