Smolny Convent

The Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens of Saint Petersburg (Russian: Смольный институт благородных девиц Санкт-Петербурга) was the first women's educational institution in Russia that laid the foundation for women's education in the country. It was Europe's first public educational institution for girls.

Smolny is a place name in central Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is a compound of historically interrelated buildings erected in 18th and 19th centuries. As the most widely known of the buildings, the Smolny Institute, has been used as the seat of the City Governor's Office; its name is associated with city authorities. From late 1917 until 1991 it was mostly associated with the October Revolution of 1917 and Vladimir Lenin, who lived and worked there from late 1917 to early 1918. A pre-1917 educational facility for young ladies gave rise after 1991 to a number of similarly named places of learning in the city because of the high prestige of the original one in popular culture.

The Smolny Institute (Russian: Смольный институт, Smol'niy institut) is a Palladian edifice in Saint Petersburg that has played a major part in the history of Russia.

The Kikin Hall (Кикины палаты) is one of the oldest buildings in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The diminutive residence was commissioned by Alexander Kikin in 1714. The name of the architect is unknown, but similarities to the old Peterhof palace abound, suggesting an attribution to Andreas Schlüter.The palace was incomplete at the time of Alexander Kikin's disgrace and execution in 1718. The building was confiscated by the crown and used to house the royal library and the cabinet of curiosities of the Academy of Sciences (later transferred to the Kunstkamera building). The original two-storey residence was expanded and the third storey was added at some point in the 1720s.After 1733 the building was occupied by the office of the Horse Guards and their hospital. It was completely remodeled in 1829, and its Baroque decor was removed. The dilapidated building was further damaged by aerial bombs in the 1940s.It was Irina Benois, from the famous Benois family, who restored the building to its presumed Petrine Baroque appearance in a campaign lasting from 1952 to 1956. The Kikin Palace currently houses a music school.

Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge (Russian: Большеохтинский мост, before 1917 - Peter the Great Bridge, Russian: Мост Петра́ Вели́кого, Most Petra Velikogo; from 1917 to 1956 - Bolsheokhtensky Bridge, Russian: Большеохтенский мост; also known as Okhtinsky Bridge, Russian: Охтинский мост) is a bridge across the Neva River in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The bridge's length is 334 meters, the width is 23 meters. The bridge features three spans; the central one can be drawn.

Nyenschantz (Russian: Ниенша́нц, Nienshants; Swedish: Nyenskans; Finnish: Nevanlinna) was a Swedish fortress at the confluence of the Neva River and Okhta River, the site of present-day Saint Petersburg, Russia. Nyenschantz was built in 1611 to establish Swedish rule in Ingria, which had been annexed from the Tsardom of Russia during the Time of Troubles. The town of Nyen, which formed around Nyenschantz, became a wealthy trading center and a capital of Swedish Ingria during the 17th century. In 1702, Nyenschantz and Nyen were conquered by Russia during the Great Northern War, and the new Russian capital of Saint Petersburg was established by Peter the Great in their place the following year.

The Okhta (Russian: Óхта) is a river in Vsevolozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast and the eastern part of the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is the largest right tributary of the river Neva. It joins the Neva 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) upstream of the Neva's mouth, within the city limits of Saint Petersburg. The length of the Okhta is 90 kilometres (56 mi), and the area of its drainage basin is 768 square kilometres (297 sq mi). Its largest tributary is the Okkervil (left). The Rzhevsky Reservoir (5 kilometres (3.1 mi) long, 120 metres (390 ft) wide, with a volume of 4 mln m³) has been built on the Okhta. The Utkina Dacha estate is located on the banks of the Okhta close to the mouth of the Okkervil. The source of the Okhta is in the swamps in the northwestern part of Vsevolozhsky District, north of the town of Sertolovo. The Okhta flows southeast, downstream of the settlement of Vartemyagi turns east, passes southwest of the urban-type settlement of Toksovo and turns south. Below Toksovo, it essentially flows through the suburbs of Saint Petersburg. Downstream of the town of Murino it enters the city of Saint Petersburg, passes Ladozhsky railway station and has its mouth under the Malookhtinsky Bridge, which separates Malookhtinskaya and Sverdlovskaya Embankments. The drainage basin of the Okhta includes the south of the Karelian Isthmus. The town of Vsevolozhsk and the urban-type settlements of Toksovo and Kuzmolovsky are located in this river basin. Large lakes in the basin of the Okhta include Lake Kavgolovskoye and Lake Khepoyarvi.

Dacha Durnovo (Russian: Дача Дурново) is the countryside manor of Bakunin family (XVIII c.) and Durnovo family (XIX c.). Smolninskoye Municipal Okrug (Russian: муниципа́льный о́круг Смо́льнинское) is a municipal okrug of Tsentralny District of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. Population: 76,259 (2010 Census); 90,337 (2002 Census).The okrug borders the Neva River in the north and in the east, Nevsky Avenue in the south, Chernyshevskogo Avenue and Vosstaniya Street in the west. Places of interest include the Oktyabrsky Concert Hall, Smolny Institute, Smolny Convent, Suvorov Museum, and Tauride Palace.

Tauride Palace (Russian: Таврический дворец, romanized: Tavrichesky dvorets) is one of the largest and most historically important palaces in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Suvorov Memorial Museum (Russian: Музей Суворова) in Saint Petersburg, Russia is a military museum dedicated to the memory of Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov (1729–1800). It was founded in 1900 to commemorate the century of Suvorov's death and was inaugurated four years later. In 1904, the museum moved into the present building.

The Tauride Garden (Russian: Таврический сад) is a park in the Tsentralny District of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is located behind the Tauride Palace, and near the Smolny Cathedral.
