Quarry Farm is located on East Hill overlooking Elmira, New York, and the Chemung River Valley. In 1869, Jervis Langdon purchased the property as a vacation home for his family. When he died the following year, it was inherited by his eldest daughter, Susan Langdon Crane. It remained in the Langdon family until 1982, when it was donated to Elmira College as part of the founding of the Center For Mark Twain Studies. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was married to Susan Crane's younger sister, Olivia Langdon Clemens. During their courtship, Sam promised Livy that he would never allow her to feel the homesickness he felt, and from this promise emanated their annual summer pilgrimage to Quarry Farm.All three of the Clemens' daughters would be born at Quarry Farm, and during the three decades the family regularly summered there, Twain composed many of his books and other literature, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He wrote most of this work in an octagonal study built expressly for him by the Cranes about 200 yards (180 m) from the main house in 1874. That study was relocated to the campus of Elmira College in 1952.As part of the stipulation of the gift, Quarry Farm is not open to the public, but is reserved exclusively for the use of scholars researching and writing about Twain and his circle. At least 10–15 of these Quarry Farm Fellows spend anywhere from a week to a month living in the house, surrounded by an extensive library of Twain-related materials, with access to the Mark Twain Archive at Elmira College, and assisted by the Center For Mark Twain Studies, which employs a full-time archivist and resident scholar.

WLVY (1600 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station that is licensed to two adjacent cities in the Southern Tier of New York, Elmira Heights and Horseheads, New York. It is owned by Tower Broadcasting and airs a Top 40 (CHR) radio format. The studios, offices and transmitter are on Lake Street in Elmira. Programming is also heard on two FM translator stations, 93.9 MHz W230BB in Elmira and 96.7 MHz W244EC in Corning.

Pentecostal Holy Temple Church of Jesus Christ, formerly known as The Free Baptist Church, was a historic Baptist church located at Elmira in Chemung County, New York. It was built in 1882 and is an example of late 19th century Gothic Revival style ecclesiastical architecture. The building has been demolished. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Eldridge Park, located in Elmira, New York, is a famous amusement park, which opened around the turn of the 20th century. Covering roughly 15 acres (6.1 ha), it is dedicated to the memory of a local physician and is still in common usage. The park includes an 1890s Looff Carousel, an outdoor stage, an extensive network of picnic areas, a wooden roller coaster, haunted house, shooting gallery, bumper cars, a boat ride along the park's lake, eateries, a miniature golf course, and a small-gauge train ride through the park, in addition to several other rides and attractions. Eldridge Lake was believed to be bottomless in local folklore and, that there was an underground water tunnel that leads at least 20 miles (32 km) to the north, to Seneca Lake, one of the nearby Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. However, the depth of the lake is 39 feet (12 m) and there are no known tunnels that connect Eldridge Lake with Seneca Lake.Eldridge Park also has several soccer fields, used by the local travel soccer club, Soaring Capital Soccer Club, a skate park, and a baseball field.

Fire Station No. 4, also known as the Maxwell Place Fire Station, is located at 301 Maxwell Place, Elmira, New York. It was designed by local architects Pierce & Bickford. It was built in 1897, and is significant as an example of firehouse design around the start of the 20th century.

The Elmira Heights Village Hall, located in Elmira Heights, New York, was built in 1896. It was designed by local architects Pierce & Bickford. It is significant architecturally as an example of the Chateauesque or Northern Renaissance Revival style of the period. It is significant historically for its role in local government. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Horseheads is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 19,412 at the 2020 census. The name of the town is derived from the number of bleached horses' skulls once found there. Horseheads is north of the city of Elmira, upon which it borders. There is a village named Horseheads within the town. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Chemung County is a county in the Southern Tier of the U.S. state of New York. The population was 84,148 as of the 2020 census. Its county seat is Elmira. Its name is derived from a Delaware Indian village whose name meant "big horn". Chemung County comprises the Elmira, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Elmira-Corning, NY Combined Statistical Area. Many signs posted along roads in Chemung County refer to the area as "Mark Twain Country," because the noted author lived and wrote for many years in Elmira.

Elmira Heights is a village in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 4,097 at the 2010 census. The village is primarily within the town of Horseheads, but part of the village is in the town of Elmira. The village is a northern suburb of the city of Elmira. It is part of the Elmira, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The William S. Gerity House is a historic house located at 415 William Street in Elmira, Chemung County, New York.

Pratt House is a historic home located at Elmira, Chemung County, New York. It is a large scale brick dwelling in the Italianate style. It has a cross-gable plan and features two asymmetrical towers, a projecting polygonal bay, and a stepped back, Arts and Crafts style north wing. The lower tower has a pyramidal roof and the taller tower a bell cast roof embellished with cresting. It was originally located on Union Place, but moved to its present location in 1872 when it was extensively remodeled to its present appearance. The rear wing was added in the 1920s when it was home to the Elmira Eagles Aerie 941.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The John W. Jones House currently stands at 1250 Davis Street, Elmira, New York, across from a historic entrance to Woodlawn Cemetery. It is the former home of John W. Jones and current home of the John W. Jones Museum. It stands on part of its original property, though it originally faced College Avenue. Historically, the house was the private residence of John W. Jones and his family, but changed ownership several times since, and was used as rental property that fell into disrepair. Condemned by the City of Elmira in 1997, Lucy Brown brought it to the public's attention and with a group of concerned citizens, saved it from demolition. It is now the home to the John W. Jones Museum.
