Zamość

Zamość Fortress (Polish: Twierdza Zamość) is a set of fortifications constructed together with the city of Zamość (southeastern Poland). It was built between 1579 and 1618, and the construction was initiated by Chancellor and Hetman Jan Zamoyski. It was one of the biggest fortresses of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, built so solidly that it was able to resist the attacks of both the Cossacks and the Swedes during the Deluge. It was taken down in 1866, although fragments survive. Altogether, the fortress went through six sieges, with the first one taking place in 1648, during the Khmelnytsky Uprising. Eight years later it was surrounded by the Swedes, who came there again in 1703, then, in 1809, by the army of the Duchy of Warsaw, which captured it from the Austrians. The longest one was the siege of Zamość of 1813, when the Polish garrison for 8 months defended the fortress from the Russians. The last siege took place during the November Uprising, when Zamość was the last point of Polish defence which fell to the Russians. The fortress, which had in the meantime become obsolete, was closed down in 1866.

The Town Hall in Zamość is a Baroque building in the Old Town area of Zamość, Poland. It is located on the northern side of the market square and features a 52-meter clocktower. The area in which the town hall resides is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the town hall itself is on the register of monuments in Poland. The complex houses an annex, the town council, and a tourist information center.

Zamość Synagogue (Polish: Synagoga Dawna w Zamościu) is a UNESCO-protected Renaissance synagogue built between 1610 and 1618 in Zamość, southeastern Poland. Erected during the times of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, it functioned as a place of worship for Polish Jews until World War II, when the Nazis turned the interior into a carpenters' workshop. The structure was spared from destruction and in 1992 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Old City of Zamość.

The Zamoyski Academy (Polish: Akademia Zamojska; Latin: Hippaeum Zamoscianum; 1594–1784) was an academy founded in 1594 by Polish Crown Chancellor Jan Zamoyski. It was the third institution of higher education to be founded in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. After his death it slowly lost its importance, and in 1784 it was downgraded to a lyceum. The present-day I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Hetmana Jana Zamoyskiego w Zamościu is one of several secondary schools in Zamość.

The Sacred Museum of the Zamość Cathedral (formerly the Collegiate Church Museum, the Zamoyski Family Foundation) - is a museum based in Zamość, Poland. The facility operates at the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. Thomas the Apostle, Zamość, and its headquarters is the ground floor of a former prelate building, dating from the late 16th century. The museum was opened in March 1987, thanks to the efforts of the last head of the Zamoyski Family Fee Tail, Jan Tomasz Zamoyski. As part of the museum exhibition you can see monuments of sacred art from the treasury of the cathedral, including: The coronation alb of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, liturgical vestments - the oldest from the 16th and 17th centuries, liturgical vessels, reliquaries, votive offerings and church books, portraits of Prelates and Zamoyski headwinders, including coffin portraits.Following renovation and conservation work in 2018-2019 covering both buildings (the Infułatka and the Vicarage), from 2020 the museum will consist of two main expositions occupying the aforementioned two historic buildings: the Vicarage (3 Kolegiacka St.) houses the "Treasury of History, Art and Science" exhibition, while the Infułatka (1a Kolegiacka St.) is dedicated to the "Fabrica Ecclesiace museum of technology and architecture" exhibition.

The Diocese of Zamość-Lubaczów (Latin: Dioecesis Zamosciensis-Lubaczoviensis) is a suffragan Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in the ecclesiastical province of Przemyśl in Poland. Its cathedral episcopal see is Katedra Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego i św. Tomasza Apostoła, a World Heritage Site dedicated to Resurrection and the St. Thomas the Apostle, in the city of Zamość, Lubelskie. It also has a Co-cathedral: Konkatedra św. Stanisława, dedicated to Saint Stanislaus, in Lubaczów, Podkarpackie a Minor Basilica: Bazylika św. Antoniego z Padwy, in Radecznica, Lubelskie a second World Heritage Site: Cerkiew św. Paraskewy, in Radruż, Podkarpackie.

The Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. Thomas the Apostle (Polish: Katedra Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego i św. Tomasza Apostoła ), commonly known as Zamość Cathedral, is a religious building that is affiliated with the Catholic Church and is located in the old town of Zamość, a city in southeastern Poland.It is a church built in the late 16th century. It is located in the so-called Route of Renaissance. The Cathedral was established by the city's founder, Jan Zamoyski, and the author of the project was architect Bernardo Morando, an Italian, who took as a reference to the Italian churches of centuries XV and XVI. Initially it was a collegiate church until 1992, when the Diocese of Zamosc-Lubaczów, who rose to the rank of cathedral by decision of then Pope John Paul II was established.

Church of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Polish: Kościół Zwiastowania NMP w Zamościu) commonly known as the Franciscan Church (Polish: Kościół Franciszkanów) is a Baroque Franciscan church in the Old Town in Zamość, dedicated to the Annunciation. This largest church in Zamość (56-meter long and 29-meter wide) was regarded as one of the most prominent 17th-century churches in Poland.

Siege of Zamość was part of The Deluge, a series of campaigns in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, that took place in early 1656.

Zamość County (Polish: powiat zamojski) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Lublin Voivodeship, eastern Poland. It was established on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat is the city of Zamość, although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county). The county contains three towns: Szczebrzeszyn, which lies 21 km (13 mi) west of Zamość, Zwierzyniec, which lies 24 km (15 mi) south-west of Zamość, and Krasnobród, 22 km (14 mi) south of Zamość. The county covers an area of 1,872.27 square kilometres (722.9 sq mi). As of 2019, its total population is 107,441, including a population of 4,991 in Szczebrzeszyn, 3,175 in Zwierzyniec, 3,091 in Krasnobród, and a rural population of 96,184.

The Museum of Zamość (Polish: Muzeum Zamojskie) is a registered museum in Poland, founded in the historic city of Zamość in 1926 during the interbellum. It is located in the centre of the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition spaces are arranged at the upper floors of the meticulously restored tenement houses (kamienice) built during the Renaissance by immigrant Armenians in Poland who settled there in 1585, thanks to privileges granted by the Grand Hetman of the Crown Jan Zamoyski. The Museum is divided into six departments including Archeology, Library, Ethnography, General History, the Rotunda, and Education.

Gmina Zamość is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Zamość County, Lublin Voivodeship, in eastern Poland. Its seat is the town of Zamość, although the town is not part of the territory of the gmina. The gmina covers an area of 197 square kilometres (76.1 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 20,482 (22,305 in 2013).
