Abbey Mills Mosque

The Abbey Mill was a medieval tidal watermill in West Ham, London, dating back to at least the 12th century. It was sited on Channelsea Island in the Channelsea River in the London Borough of Newham. It was one of the eight watermills on the River Lea recorded in the Domesday Book.The area nearby the site of the original Abbey Mill is now known as Abbey Mills. There are several pumping stations located there, including the original Abbey Mills Pumping Station.

Channelsea Island is a small man-made island in the centre of the Channelsea River in East London, near Three Mills Island in the London Borough of Newham. The island was the site of the Abbey Mill, dating back to at least the 12th century.A series of derelict buildings located on the island, including remains of the Abbey Mill chemical works.

The West Ham station attack was a bombing and shooting attack at West Ham station in east London on 15 March 1976. A 5 lb (2.3 kg) bomb on a Metropolitan line train exploded prematurely in the front carriage of the train, injuring seven passengers. The bomb detonated prior to reaching the City of London, where it was thought the intended target was Liverpool Street station at rush hour. Adrian Vincent Donnelly, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member, then shot Post Office engineer Peter Chalk in the chest, and killed train driver Julius Stephen, who had attempted to catch him. Donelly exited the station to the street and threatened people with his revolver before PC Raymond Kiff caught up with him. Shouting "You English bastards!", Donelly shot himself in the chest, but he survived and was apprehended by Kiff.

West Ham is a London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and National Rail intermodal interchange station in West Ham, London, United Kingdom. The station is served by London Underground's District, Hammersmith & City and Jubilee lines, the Stratford International branch of the DLR, and c2c National Rail services. The station was opened in 1901 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway on the route from Fenchurch Street to Barking. In the late 1990s, the station was rebuilt and significantly expanded as part of the Jubilee Line Extension, fully opening in 1999. The station is in London fare zone 2 and zone 3.

Abbey Creek is a tidal river channel of the River Lea in London. It runs on the opposite side of Channelsea Island to the Channelsea River.

The Lee Tunnel, also known as the Stratford to East Ham deep tunnel, is a paradigm overflow sewer in East London for storage and conveyance of foul sewage mixed with rainwater. It was built as part of the Thames Tideway Scheme and runs from Abbey Mills Pumping Station down to pumps and storage tanks at Jenkins Lane, Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. It is wholly under the London Borough of Newham. This 6.9 km (4.3 mi) tunnel, of 7.2 m (24 ft) diameter, laid at between 75 m (246 ft) deep, at start, to 80 m (260 ft) at finish, captures c. 16,000,000 m3 (1.6×1010 L), or 16 million tonnes, of sewage annually from the single largest polluting CSO in London - the amount varies with rainfall. This sewage overflow had flowed untreated into the River Lea, after which it diluted gradually in the Thames Tideway (the narrowest parts of the Thames Estuary). It can take 30 days for effluent to reach the sea from the Tideway.From its terminus, pumps send the effluent into the adjacent Beckton Sewage Treatment Works – the largest such works in Europe. From that works the resultant water (treated sewage), with solids removed and the most harmful chemicals treated, empties into the (Thames's) Tideway, its upper estuary. Lying at −75 metres (−246 ft) AOD means a second source of London's old-style combined sewers' effluent can be caught, that from the Thames Tideway Tunnel, which is under construction and due to open in 2024.

Abbey Mills Pumping Station is a sewage pumping station in Mill Meads, East London, operated by Thames Water. The pumping station lifts sewage from the London sewerage system into the Northern Outfall Sewer and the Lee Tunnel, which both run to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. The original pumping station, designed by engineer Joseph Bazalgette, Edmund Cooper, and architect Charles Driver, was built between 1865 and 1868, housing eight beam engines by Rothwell & Co. of Bolton. Two engines on each arm of a cruciform plan, with an elaborate Byzantine style, described as The Cathedral of Sewage. Another of Bazalgette's designs, Crossness Pumping Station, is located south of the River Thames at Crossness, at the end of the Southern Outfall Sewer. A modern sewage pumping station (Station F) was completed in 1997 about 200 metres (660 ft) south of the original station.

Abbey Road DLR station is a Docklands Light Railway station in West Ham in the London Borough of Newham, in east London, England. It is located on the Stratford International extension of the Docklands Light Railway.

Channelsea River is a tidal river in London, England, one of the Bow Back Rivers that flow into the Bow Creek part of the River Lea, which in turn flows into the River Thames. In 1957–8, the Channelsea River was culverted between Stratford High Street and Lett Road.In 1994, the historian Dan Cruickshank found 4,000 tons (60%) of the lost Euston Arch buried in the bed of the River Lea at the Channelsea River and the Prescott Channel. Channelsea Island is in this river.

Abbey Gardens is a community garden in East London built on the site of a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The garden area was a row of cottages, and beneath is the remain of the gatehouse of the Stratford Langthorne Abbey. It is managed by a charity, The Friends of Abbey Gardens (Charity number 1158147). The garden was created in 2008, by two artists, Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie.

Stratford Langthorne Abbey, or the Abbey of St Mary's, Stratford Langthorne was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1135 at Stratford Langthorne — then Essex but now Stratford in the London Borough of Newham. The Abbey, also known as West Ham Abbey as it lay in that parish, was one of the largest Cistercian abbeys in England, possessing 1,500 acres (6.07 km2) of local land, controlling over 20 manors throughout Essex. The Abbey was self-sufficient for its needs and wealthy besides; some of this wealth came from the ecclesiastic mills grinding wheat for local bakers to supply bread to the City of London. This later led to competition with the Guild of Bakers, who sought powers to levy a toll on loaves entering the City at Whitechapel.

Celebrity Big Brother 1, also referred to as Celebrity Big Brother 2001, was the first series of the British reality television show Celebrity Big Brother. The show is based on an originally Dutch TV series of the same name created by producer John de Mol in 1997. In honour of Comic Relief, six celebrities entered the Big Brother house. The series premiered on 9 March 2001, and lasted for a total of eight days. It concluded on 16 March 2001 when comedian Jack Dee was crowned the winner. The series revolved around a group of celebrities living in a custom built house with no contact with the outside world. Each week, the housemates are required to nominate two people for eviction. The two or more people with the most votes were nominated to leave the House. The viewers then decided which of the nominees should leave, with the selected person leaving during a live show. This process continued until only three housemates remained, at which time the public voted for which of them should win the series. Unlike the original show, Celebrity Big Brother saw the housemates competing for charity. On 17 March 2023, a special twenty-second anniversary show aired as part of the 2023 Comic Relief event. The show titled “When Comic Relief did Big Brother” was broadcast at 10pm on BBC Two. It featured interviews with five of the six housemates (Chris Eubank did not participate) with a look back on the series and their time in the house. Marcus Bentley narrated the episode.
