The gmina covers an area of 131.74 square kilometres (50.9 sq mi), and as of 2019 its total population is 6,723. It is part of the larger Wrocław metropolitan area.

It is the seat of the administrative district (gmina) called Gmina Dobroszyce. It lies approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) north-west of Oleśnica, and 26 kilometres (16 mi) north-east of the regional capital Wrocław. Between 1663 and 1928 it had town rights. During World War II, from 1940 to 1942, the Germans operated the Oflag VIII-C prisoner-of-war camp for French, Belgian and Dutch officers and orderlies in the village. Some Dutch POWs managed to escape from the camp.There is a railway station in Dobroszyce.
