Newark Vocational High School is a four-year comprehensive community public high school in Newark, in Essex County, New Jersey, United States, serving students in ninth through tenth grades, and operating as part of the Newark Public Schools. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 514 students and 51.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.1:1. There were 378 students (73.5% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 42 (8.2% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Newark Early College High School is a six-year comprehensive community public high school in Newark, in Essex County, New Jersey, United States, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades, and operating as part of the Newark Public Schools. Together with Newark Vocational High School, the school is one of two high schools operated on the West Side Campus. As of the 2015-16 school year, the school had an enrollment of 469 students and 41.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.4:1. There were 302 students (64.4% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 13 (2.8% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Fairmount Cemetery is a 150-acre (0.61 km2) rural cemetery in the West Ward of Newark, New Jersey, in the neighborhood of Fairmount. It opened in 1855, shortly after the Newark City Council banned burials in the central city due to fears that bodies spread yellow fever. The first burial in Fairmount Cemetery was a 24-year-old man named Lewis J. Pierson. Fairmount is still accepting interments.Along with Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fairmount has the graves of Newark's most eminent turn of the century citizens, including Clara Maass, who gave her life in the investigation of yellow fever. A high proportion of the graves belong to German families. Fairmount Cemetery includes large trees, rolling hills, and intricately carved monuments. Featured near the old South Orange Avenue entrance is the recently restored zinc Settlers' Monument, commemorating the founders of Newark. There is also a Civil War memorial. The modern entrance to Fairmount Cemetery is on Central Avenue.

The West Side is a neighborhood in the city of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is bounded on the east by Bergen Street, on the south by Rose Terrace and Avon Avenue, on the west by Irvington and on the north by South Orange Avenue. The main roads running through the neighborhood are Bergen Street, South Orange Avenue and Springfield Avenue. The mostly residential neighborhood is home to Woodland Cemetery and West Side Park. West Side High School and Chad Science Academy (closed down in 2005) (7-12) are also in this neighborhood. The area between 14th Street, 17th Avenue, 12th Avenue and Avon Avenue, once called Wolf's Harbor, is now the area around West Side Park. The area of Wolf's Harbor was once a large marsh that was home to several wolves. The area was renamed Magnolia Swamp after the tree when the wolves disappeared from the swamp. The swamp was filled in over time and eventually 14th Street cut through the middle of it after land was repeatedly filled in by Edward Keogh (an area that later was called Keogh's Hole). West Side Park, a county run park, was originally situated on a hill full of linden trees overlooking a lake, but the lake was later filled in to accommodate fields. Today the west side of the park remains elevated over the clear flat east side of the park and the hill was once used for skiing. There were once performances at the park, including Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston.

Central Avenue is the major street, though its commerce is considerably reduced from the Industrial Era heyday. The neighborhood is bounded by South Orange Avenue on the south, the Garden State Parkway on the west, Interstate 280 on the north, West Market Street on the north-east, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey on the east.

Bard High School Early College Newark is a magnet public high school in Newark, New Jersey. Established in 2011, it is part of Newark Public Schools. As of 2022, the school's principal is Carla Stephens. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 381 students and 30.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), with a student–teacher ratio of 12.5:1. 288 students (75.6%) were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.Working with Bard College, students earn 60 college credits as part of a liberal arts and sciences curriculum toward an associate degree in addition to a high school diploma. The college program is operated as a branch of Bard College at Simon's Rock and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is located in East Orange and Newark, New Jersey. The Garden State Parkway runs through the two halves of the cemetery (exit 144 and exit 145, respectively). The cemetery was established in 1859 and is maintained by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.In the 1950s, the newly constructed Garden State Parkway cut directly through the cemetery. Hundreds of graves had to be moved prior to construction. Both sides of the cemetery are visible to drivers on the Parkway today.
