Ariano Irpino Cathedral, formerly Ariano Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Ariano or Ariano Irpino, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Ariano Irpino (formerly Ariano di Puglia), in the province of Avellino, Campania, Italy, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was formerly the episcopal seat of the diocese of Ariano, and is now that of the diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia.

Ariano Irpino (formerly Ariano di Puglia or simply Ariano) is an Italian city and municipality in the province of Avellino, in the Campania region. With a territory of 186.74 square kilometres (72.10 sq mi) and a population of 22,535 (2017), it is one of the largest settlements in the Irpinia historical district and the modern province. Located 264 kilometres (164 mi) east-southeast of Rome and 104 kilometres (65 mi) east-northeast of Naples, the comune was granted the official status of Città ("City") by a presidential decree of 1952, October 26; it has been recognized as an arts town, too.

The City Museum and Ceramics Gallery is a print room and ceramics collection in Ariano Irpino in the province of Avellino, Italy. The city museum maintains a permanent display of rare printed editions of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries works from the libraries of monasteries that stood in the area and were suppressed during the nineteenth century. It also shows a civic photo library from 1865 to 1955 and a modern art gallery.The ceramics items are based on the private donation of southern-Adriatic ceramics from the 4-5th century BC. A large collection of local maiolica dating mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries are also on display.

The BioGeM Institute (Biologia e Genetica Molecolare, "Biology and Molecular Genetics") is a nonprofit consortium formed by the National Research Council (CNR), the University of Naples "Federico II", the LUMSA of Rome, the Trieste AREA Science Park, the University of Udine, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples, the University of Sannio in Benevento, the University of Foggia, the University of Milan Bicocca, the Second University and the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, the Chamber of Commerce of Avellino and the local mountain community of Ufita Valley.BioGeM was inaugurated in 2006 by Nobel laureate Rita Levi Montalcini and comprises research laboratories, services and teaching facilities. Scientific research, led by “Gaetano Salvatore” Genetics Research Institute (IRGS), takes place within Genetics and Translational Medicine (GTM) department and is aimed at understanding biological mechanisms and identifying the genes involved in the development and proliferation of various human diseases; the research is based on the use of animal models raised in a high level laboratory after the approval of the ethics committee for animal experimentation. Research primarily aims at fighting cancer and degenerative diseases, often in collaboration with international groups.Furthermore, the pharmacological research is carried out by a proper department named Medicinal Investigational Research (MIR), whose task covers the experimental verification of new drugs and the release of the related certifications. Furthermore, the training activities take place in a specific functional area named Life and Mind Science School (LIMSS). Since 2010 Biogem has yearly hosted a meeting named Le due culture ("The two cultures") which over the years has been attended by a number of Nobel laureates and also (in 2018) the president of Italy Sergio Mattarella. The objective of the meeting is to find a common ground between humanistic and scientific knowledge.The institute also hosts an office of Sopra Steria, a French company specialized in consulting and digital services. Since 2013 Biogem has a forensic genetics laboratory too.

Located in the Apennines upon a knoll within the Ufita Valley, the town is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia. Its territory borders with the municipalities of Ariano Irpino, Castel Baronia, Frigento, Grottaminarda, San Nicola Baronia, San Sossio Baronia, Sturno, Villanova del Battista and Zungoli.

The 1732 Irpinia earthquake was a seismic event with a magnitude of 6.6 that affected Irpinia and part of Sannio. It occurred on 29 November 1732 at 8:40 AM local time (UTC+1). The epicenter was located in the Campanian Apennines, in the area of the Ufita Valley, which is part of the modern-day Province of Avellino. Around twenty populated areas were destroyed entirely or in part and tens of others were significantly damaged. The number of deaths was estimated to be 1,940. Damage from the earthquake was classified as "severe" (indicating damage between $5 and US$24 million), and the number of homes destroyed as classified as "many" (indicating between 101 and 1,000 homes). The earthquake had a rating on the modified Mercalli intensity scale of X (extreme).Among the most devastated communities were Mirabella Eclano (which was razed to the ground), Carife, Grottaminarda, and Ariano Irpino. Damage was serious in the provincial capital of Avellino, while in Benevento, there were mainly partial collapses of buildings.
