The Captaincy General of Chile (Capitanía General de Chile [kapitaˈni.a xeneˈɾal ðe ˈt͡ʃile]) or Governorate of Chile (known colloquially and unofficially as the Kingdom of Chile), was a territory of the Spanish Empire from 1541 to 1817 that was, for most of its existence, part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. It comprised most of modern-day Chile and southern parts of Argentina. Its capital was Santiago de Chile. In 1810 it declared itself independent, but in 1814 the Spanish reconquered the territory, but in 1817 it gained independence as the Republic of Chile. It had a number of Spanish governors over its long history and several kings.

Santiago (, US also ; Spanish: [sanˈtjaɣo]), also known as Santiago de Chile (IPA: [sanˈtjaɣo ðe ˈt͡ʃile]), is the capital and largest city of Chile as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas. It is the center of Chile's most densely populated region, the Santiago Metropolitan Region, whose total population is 8 million, of which more than 6 million live in the city's continuous urban area. The city is entirely in the country's central valley. Most of the city lies between 500–650 m (1,640–2,133 ft) above mean sea level. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal and Balmaceda Park. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter, due to the lack of rain. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within an hour of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santiago is the political and financial center of Chile and is home to the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. The Chilean executive and judiciary are located in Santiago, but Congress meets mostly in nearby Valparaíso. Santiago is named after the biblical figure Saint James. The city will host the 2023 Pan American Games.

The Museum of Solidarity Salvador Allende (MSSA) (Spanish: Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende) is a contemporary art museum located in Santiago, Chile, named after Salvador Allende, president of Chile between 1970 and 1973.

The Conjunto Virginia Opazo is an architectural ensemble designed by architect Luciano Kulczewski, which is located in the Barrio República, in downtown Santiago, Chile. It consists of 33 two-story terraced houses. The residential subdivision was inaugurated in 1944, and was declared as a National Monument of Chile on November 10, 1992, within the category of Zona Típica (Heritage District).

The Venda Sexy is an estate near Santiago, Chile that was used as a torture center by the DINA secret police during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

República is an underground metro station on the Line 1 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. This station is named for República Avenue. The station was opened on 15 September 1975 as part of the inaugural section of the line between San Pablo and La Moneda.Like most underground Line 1 stations, it has two levels below street level: the central mezzanine and the platform level. There are three entrances from street level. The only exit on the north side of Alameda Avenue leads to the Barrio Concha y Toro. The portions of the walls along the platforms that are under the station name signs are painted yellow, which originally featured small square mosaic tiles. The station's artwork, installed in December 2000, is entitled La República de los Niños (The Republic Of The Children) and consists of paintings on ceramic tiles, which were created by children with the support of Chilean artists.

Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins (English: General Liberator Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue), popularly known as La Alameda (meaning, a street bordered by poplar trees), is the main avenue of Santiago, Chile. It runs east-west in the center of the greater urban area and is 7.77 km (4.83 mi) long, and it has up to 5 lanes in each direction. It was named after Chile's founding father Bernardo O'Higgins. It was originally a branch of the Mapocho River.

The Complex Engineering Systems Institute (ISCI), housed at Universidad de Chile and having Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile as an associate institution, brings together a group of top researchers from eight Chilean universities. Each of the researchers has been invited to join ISCI in view of their academic merit and for their existing or potential synergy with other ISCI members. This is the case with the 58 current ISCI members, who come from the Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Universidad Diego Portales, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, Universidad de los Andes, Universidad de Talca, and Universidad de Concepción. The researchers' group was formed on 24 January 2007 with two main goals. First, to define a solid set of engineering research areas that are both coherent and complementary, where all types of infrastructure interact with human behavior. Second, to establish a worldwide reference in Engineering research and education outside the USA and Europe, leading to a better understanding of relevant problems and attracting high-level, young researchers. This group has gained international recognition due to the quality of the research performed by its members. An important part of this work is performed jointly with researchers from other prestigious academic organizations abroad, through formal and personal collaboration networks. It prioritizes local synergy and nationwide impact, and the influence of its members has increased in relevant decision-making agents both in the industry and in public institutions.

Diego Portales University (Spanish: Universidad Diego Portales, UDP) is one of the first private universities founded in Chile and is named after the Chilean statesman Diego Portales. UDP has campuses in the Barrio Universitario de Santiago and Huechuraba.

Barrio Concha y Toro is a barrio located in Santiago, Chile. The neighborhood has a medieval-like street plan, whose design was influenced by the ideas of Camillo Sitte. The houses are built on the former site of the Díaz Gana Palace's park, which was divided into lots in 1915. The district's boundaries are defined by Brasil Avenue, Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, Cumming Avenue, Romero Street, Maturana Street and Erasmo Escala Street.

The Central University of Chile (UCEN) (Spanish: Universidad Central de Chile) is the first autonomous private university in Chile, founded in 1982 in Santiago de Chile. It's accredited in the areas of institutional management and undergraduate teaching by the National Accreditation Commission of Chile for a term of four years from December 2017 to December 2021. The Central University of Chile is structured in five faculties in which are held 33 undergraduate programs and a Intitute that imparts 6 top-level technical careers. Also Central University has PhD., masters and various training programs and continuing education in the areas of Management, Business, Government, Architecture, Social Sciences, Law, Education, Health and Technology. The Headquarters of Central University of Chile is located in the University District of Santiago, near the Toesca metro station, addition to four campuses, an extension center and a sports center in the heart of the capital, totaling more than 89,000 m2 infraestructura. Also has one campus in the city of La Serena, Región de Coquimbo in the north of Chile.

Unión Latinoamericana, also known as ULA, is an underground metro station on the Line 1 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It is close to Víctor Jara Stadium. The station was opened on 15 September 1975 as part of the inaugural section of the line between San Pablo and La Moneda.It has a single mezzanine, which is accessed by four entrances via two corridors. There are stairs at the four corners of the mezzanine, which are used as one-way walkways, although the stairs that go from the paid area of the mezzanine to the platforms can be used in a reverse direction for crossover between the platforms. At the top of the platforms exit stairs there are two rows of manual one-way swing gates.
