Ellis Park Stadium

The Ellis Park Stadium disaster was a crowd crush that occurred on 11 April 2001, claiming the lives of 43 people. Surpassing the Oppenheimer Stadium disaster, it became the worst sporting accident in South African history. Spectators poured into the Ellis Park Stadium in the city of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, for the local Soweto derby association football match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. There was a 60,000 capacity crowd in the stadium, but reports suggest a further 30,000 more fans were trying to gain entry to the stadium. Reports also suggest that 120,000 fans were admitted into the stadium. An Orlando Pirates equaliser sparked a further surge by the fans trying to gain entry as they scrambled to see what had happened. The match was stopped after approximately 34 minutes of play when authorities received an unusually high volume of reported injuries.

It was originally built as an athletics stadium, but also hosted football and rugby matches. The eighth IAAF World Cup in Athletics was held at the stadium in 1998. It served as the main stadium for the 1999 All-Africa Games. It is mostly used as a training ground for the Orlando Pirates and the Golden Lions. Michael Jackson performed two shows (sold out) on his History World Tour, on 10 and 12 October 1997. Also he planned to give 2 concerts on September 30 and October 2, 1993, but these plans were suspended due to violence in Johannesburg. Bon Jovi performed at the stadium during their These Days Tour on December 1, 1995. Gloria Estefan performed at the stadium during her The Evolution Tour on March 22, 1997. Tina Turner concluded the African leg of her Wildest Dreams Tour, with two consecutive shows, on April 21–22, 1996. U2 finished their Popmart Tour at the stadium on March 21, 1998. Kendrick Lamar also performed his South African leg of his international tour here on February 8, 2014.

The Doornfontein Synagogue or Lions Synagogue is the oldest synagogue still in use in Johannesburg, South Africa.The synagogue is located at 120 Siemert Road, New Doornfontein, two blocks from Ellis Park Stadium. To the left of the synagogue was a Jewish Community Center, which was added in the 1950s as part of an extension to the building. This was later sold off and converted for other uses as the congregation's membership resettled to other suburbs. The synagogue was led by Rabbi Ilan Herrmann until 2017. Herrmann had served the congregation for the last 18 years. Today, the synagogue usually has about 60 congregants for weekly Shabbat services and about 200 congregants for the High Holy Days. Most current congregants live outside of Doornfontein, in Sandton, Morningside and Highlands North.

The Ellis Park Arena (formerly Standard Bank Arena and often acknowledged as Ellis Park Indoor Arena) is an indoor sporting arena located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The capacity of the arena is 5,000 people. A large number of sports events and concerts have occurred in this arena.

It is located near the Ponte City Apartments building. The Tygerberg was designed by architect Daniel Hattingh. It houses 228 apartments over 23 floors. 120 End Street is a skyscraper in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa. It is 28 storeys tall. The three wings of the building are set at 120 degrees from each other so that each apartment in the building has a clear view.

Ponte City is a skyscraper in the Berea suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, just next to Hillbrow. It was built in 1975 to a height of 173 m (567.6 ft), making it the tallest residential skyscraper in Africa. The 55-storey building is cylindrical, with an open centre allowing additional light into the apartments. The centre space is known as "the core" and rises above an uneven rock floor. When built, Ponte City was seen as an extremely desirable address due to its views over all of Johannesburg and its surroundings. The neon sign on top of the building is the largest sign in the southern hemisphere and, prior to 2000, advertised for The Coca-Cola Company. It currently advertises the South African mobile phone company Vodacom.
