Ridgeley, West Virginia

Ridgeley High School, built in 1934, was a middle and a high school in Mineral County, West Virginia. The high school closed in 1976 because of consolidation of the Mineral County Schools district. At one time the school contained kindergarten though 12th grade.

Fort Ohio (also known as the "New Store") was a stockade fort erected by Job Pearsall in 1749 on the present site of Ridgeley, West Virginia. The building was of log construction, 45 feet (14 m) long and 25 feet (7.6 m) wide, with two stories. Its name comes from the Ohio Company which did have a trading post at that location. The Ohio Company found success because a trail across the Allegheny Mountains from the Potomac River at Cumberland to near modern-day Pittsburgh offered a direct route to the Ohio River.

The Cumberland Dam was built across the North Branch of the Potomac River at Cumberland, Maryland, for the purpose of diverting water of the river into the head of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company began construction of its Dam No. 8 in 1837 and work proceeded intermittently, finally concluding in 1850.: 242  The dam impounded water over a distance of a mile, causing back water for about 3 miles (4.8 km) up the river. Above the dam is the mouth of Wills Creek.

Caiuctucuc was a large village of on the western side of what is now Cumberland, Maryland, found between 1720 and 1730 by early European explorers. It sat at the junction of the Cohongaronta (Potomac) and the Caiuctucuc (Wills Creek) streams. Tipis and lodges lined the riverbank along present day Green Street in western Cumberland.The village was abandoned prior to 1751 to the ever-growing numbers of animal trappers and traders.

George Washington's Headquarters are a historic site located at 38 Greene Street in Cumberland, Maryland in central Allegany County (39° 38.975′ N, 78° 45.885′ W). The centerpiece and primary attraction at the site is a historic log cabin twice occupied by George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. The cabin resides in an area known today as Riverside Park, but was originally built about 2 blocks away, the original site is located nearby at 16 Washington Street.

Cumberland is a city in and the county seat of Allegany County, Maryland, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 19,076. Located on the Potomac River, Cumberland is a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. It is the primary city of the Cumberland metropolitan area, which had 95,044 residents in 2020.Historically, Cumberland was known as the "Queen City" as it was once the second largest in the state. Because of its strategic location on what became known as the Cumberland Road through the Appalachians, after the American Revolution it served as a historical outfitting and staging point for westward emigrant trail migrations throughout the first half of the 1800s. In this role, it supported the settlement of the Ohio Country and the lands in that latitude of the Louisiana Purchase. It also became an industrial center, served by major roads, railroads, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which connected Cumberland to Washington, D.C. and is now a national historical park. Today, Interstate 68 bisects the town. Industry declined after World War II, leading urban, business, and technological development in the state to be concentrated in eastern coastal cities. Today, the Cumberland metropolitan area is one of the poorest in the United States, ranking 305th out of 318 metropolitan areas in per capita income.

The Allegany County Courthouse is the Maryland Circuit court for Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is located in Cumberland's Washington Street Historic District. Although many church spires dot the Cumberland landscape, it is the Allegany County Courthouse that dominates this city's skyline. The building is prominently sited along Washington Street, which rises sharply from Wills Creek running through the heart of Cumberland. Historically, courthouses in America have been one of the most architecturally impressive buildings within a community. In this way, the architecture of the building was able to convey the authority of a local government, as well as instill respect and recognition.

Cumberland station is a historic railway station in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. It was built in 1913 as a stop for the Western Maryland Railway (WM). The building was operated as a passenger station until the WM ended service in 1959, and it continued to be used by the railway until 1976. It was subsequently restored and currently serves as a museum and offices, as well as the operating base for a heritage railway.

Located in the historic district of Cumberland, Maryland, the Washington Street Library first opened its doors on June 19, 1934. This Greek Revival style building was constructed between 1849 and 1850, as a larger building for the Allegany County Academy, the first public school in Allegany County which was founded in 1799. A new addition was constructed in 1966, allowing for the expansion of the library collection. Today, the Washington Street Library houses the largest reference collection in the Allegany County Library System, and offers an extensive local history area in the Maryland Room. Free internet access, books on tape, Interlibrary Loan services, and an impressive collection of fiction and non-fiction materials are just a few of the services offered. Children's programs take place weekly.

The Washington Street Historic District is a national historic district named after George Washington in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. It is an approximately 35-acre (140,000 m2) residential area to the west of downtown Cumberland and consists primarily of six blocks of Washington Street. It contains large-scale 19th- and 20th-century houses representing most of the major architectural styles, including examples of Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Colonial Revival, and bungalow. Also included in the district are the 1890s Romanesque courthouse, the 1850s Greek Revival academy building, and the Algonquin Hotel. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.The Washington Street Historic District is home to the Washington Street Library, the Circuit Courthouse for Allegany County, the Allegany County Board of Education, and the Allegany County Historical Society. The remains of Fort Cumberland are also in the Washington Street Historic District.

Canal Place is a 58.1-acre (235,000 m2) heritage area located in Cumberland, Maryland at the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

Klots Throwing Company Mill is a historic silk mill located at Cumberland in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It was built in 1902–1903, and is a long two-story brick building with double-gable roofs and paired stepped parapets. An addition was built in 1909. It was operated by Gentex Corporation and closed in 1972. The building was subsequently used for storage. From 1988 until 2002, the north end of the building housed the Western Maryland Food Bank. The building will be converted to loft apartments.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
