Berryville Historic District is a national historic district located at Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. It encompasses 313 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object in the town of Berryville. They include a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings dating from the late 18th century to the 1930s. Notable buildings include the Treadwell Smith House (Hawthorne Hall) (c. 1820), Sarah Stribling House (Battletown Inn) (c. 1810), Crow's Nest (1830s), Berryville Presbyterian Church (c. 1854), Grace Episcopal Church (1857), Coiner's Department Store (c. 1896), Clarke Milling Company (now Custom Millwork, Inc.), H. W. Baker Grain Warehouse (now Berryville Farm Supply), H. B. Whiting Brothers Warehouse, Berryville railroad depot (1910), the First National Bank (c. 1910), the Farmers and Merchants National Bank (c. 1930), and the U.S. Post Office (1938). The contributing object is the Clarke County Confederate Memorial on the grounds of the courthouse. Located in the district and separately listed is the Old Clarke County Courthouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Old Clarke County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse complex located at Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. The complex includes the Old Clarke County Courthouse, built in 1837; the original county clerk's building, dating from the 1880s; and a two-story building built about 1900 and containing the Sheriff's office and county jail. The former courthouse is a two-story, red brick temple-form structure, fronted by a full-height Tuscan order portico in the Roman Revival style. The building served as the county's courthouse until 1977, when a new courthouse was erected. It was subsequently designated the General District Courts Building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Josephine City Historic District is a national historic district located on either side of Josephine Street in the southeast portion of the town of Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. It encompasses 38 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites on 40 acres of land. While most of the district is occupied by single-family dwellings, there are also a church, a parish hall, three former school buildings, and a cemetery. Located in the district and separately listed is the Josephine City School, which now houses the Josephine Community Museum.Josephine City Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2015. Josephine City School is a historic school building for African-American children located at Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. It was built about 1882, and is a rectangular, one-story, frame building with a gable roof and a four-bay side gable entrance facade. The school measures approximately 40 feet long and 30 feet wide. It is part of a school complex for African American children that included the Josephine City School; the 1930 brick Clarke County Training School; and a 1941 frame building that was constructed as additional agriculture classrooms. It was used as an elementary school until 1930, when it was moved a short distance from its original location, and used as the Clarke County Training School's home economics and agriculture classrooms. It was used for classrooms until 1971, when it was turned into storage space, after which it was converted into low/moderate-income elderly housing.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.Part of the building now houses the Josephine School Community Museum and Clarke County African-American Cultural Center. Opened in 2003, the museum displays the history of Clarke County's African-American community.

Soldier's Rest is a historic farmhouse located in Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. It was constructed about 1780 for the family of William Morton, and it was later owned and added to by Daniel Morgan, a general in the American Revolution, and by Col Griffin Taylor, a veteran of the War of 1812, perhaps giving the home its name "Soldier's Rest".Prior to the current house being built, a smaller one stood some 200 yards away, and said to be the place where George Washington stayed when he was surveying the land here for Lord Fairfax in 1748.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Battle of Berryville was fought September 3 and September 4, 1864, in Clarke County, Virginia. It took place toward the end of the American Civil War. After taking control of Smithfield Summit on August 29, Union Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan marched to Berryville with his 50,000 man Army of the Shenandoah. At the same time Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early sent Maj. Gen. Joseph B. Kershaw's division east from Winchester to Berryville. At about 5:00 p.m., Kershaw attacked Colonel Joseph Thoburn's division of the Army of West Virginia, while they were preparing to go into camp. Kershaw routed Thoburn's left flank before the rest of the corps came to the rescue. Darkness ended the fighting, with both sides bringing in heavy reinforcements. The next morning, Early, seeing the strength of the Union's entrenched line, retreated behind Opequon Creek.

Clarke County High School is a public high school in Berryville, Virginia. CCHS was ranked 19th on Newsweek's Top 1200 High Schools list in 2006. This used a metric based on the amount of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests taken by all the students in 2005 divided by the amount of graduating seniors. Its courses cover a wide spectrum of advanced levels including the International Baccalaureate program; dual-enrollment courses with Laurel Ridge Community College and AP courses. Additionally, vocational and technical training courses have been expanded: in addition to Future Farmers of America (FFA) and DECA courses, students may choose from a variety of career and trade fields - including nursing, basic construction, CAD and computer courses, and horticulture. The school was originally opened in 1920. In 1954, the school moved to 200 Swan Avenue, in the building that today houses Johnson-Williams Middle School. In 1987, CCHS moved again, to 240 Westwood Road. The current high school, at 627 Mosby Boulevard, opened in 2012. Situated on over 50 acres of land, it was built to accommodate future growth, with a planned capacity of over 800 students. It features 22 general classrooms as well as 6 science labs, 2 business labs, 5 technology labs, and a large agricultural lab. In addition, the current building houses a state-of-the-art auditorium, and a gymnasium with a college regulation size basketball court and team support spaces. Following extensive renovations, the former high school building was reopened in 2014 to serve as an elementary school. The faculty consists of over 50 highly qualified teachers and coaches. The day is split into an eight block a day schedule. It is the only public high school in Clarke County, VA. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the school offers many opportunities for students to participate in strong extra-curricular activities.

Clermont is a 355-acre (1.44 km2) farm and national historic district located near Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. The main house was created by Edward Snickers in five parts, beginning in 1756, with additions circa 1770, 1810 and 1840, with a final addition in 1970. The house has an unusual plan with a stair perpendicular to the central hall. The original land grant was made from Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron to John Vance in 1751. Vance, born in 1699, was from County Tyrone in Ireland, sailing to America in 1731. In 1753 he sold the property to Thomas Wadlington, who in turn sold to Edward Snickers, who ran a tavern and a ferry on the Shenandoah River near Williams Gap, later called Snickers Gap. His son William inherited the property in 1791. In 1819 William Snickers sold Clermont to Dawson McCormick, whose son Edward inherited the property in 1834. After Edward's death in 1871, his wife Emma sold a 321 acres (1.30 km2) of the property to former slaves and other African-Americans in the area, creating the community of Josephine City, now Josephine Street in Berryville.

Pigeon Hill is an unincorporated community in Clarke County, Virginia. Pigeon Hill lies on the Lord Fairfax Highway (U.S. Route 340) south of Berryville.

Norwood is a historic plantation house and farm located near Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. The main house was built about 1819, and consists of a two-story, three-bay, brick main block with two-story, brick side wing in the Federal-style. The front facade features a classical one-story, one-bay portico with Doric order columns. Also on the property are the contributing brick meathouse, which dates to the same period as the main house; a late 19th-century frame tenant house; and several late 19th-century agricultural buildings.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
