Gmina Głogów

Głogów ([ˈɡwɔɡuf] ; German: Glogau, rarely Groß-Glogau, Czech: Hlohov, Silesian: Głogōw) is a city in western Poland. It is the county seat of Głogów County, in Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Głogów is the sixth largest town in the Voivodeship; its population in 2021 was 65,400. The name of the town derives from głóg, the Polish name for hawthorn. Among the oldest towns in Poland, Głogów was founded in the 10th century as a Piast defensive settlement and obtained city rights in the 13th century from Duke Konrad I. Due to the town's strategic location on several trade routes, the townspeople received many privileges and benefits, which brought wealth and greatly reflected on the city's architecture. Over time, Głogów grew to be one of the largest fortified towns in Lower Silesia. The demolition of fortifications at the beginning of the 20th century improved the chances for further growth. However, towards the end of the Second World War Głogów was once again turned into a defensive fortress and as such suffered almost complete destruction.Currently reconstruction works are being carried out with the aim of restoring the historic pre-war appearance of the town. The castle, which was rebuilt between 1971 and 1983, now houses the Historical and Archaeological Museum, displaying artifacts such as Lusatian burial artifacts from Wróblin Głogowski. Since 1984 the town also has been the venue for the Głogów Jazz Festival, which features local and international singers, musicians and performers.

Głogów County (Polish: powiat głogowski) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, south-western Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. The county covers an area of 443.06 square kilometres (171.1 sq mi). Its administrative seat and only town is Głogów. As of 2019 the total population of the county is 89,319, of which the population of the town of Głogów is 67,317 and the rural population is 22,002.

The Duchy of Głogów (Polish: Księstwo głogowskie, Czech: Hlohovské knížectví) or Duchy of Glogau (German: Herzogtum Glogau) was one of the Duchies of Silesia ruled by the Silesian Piasts. Its capital was Głogów in Lower Silesia.

Ruszowice [ruʂɔˈvit͡sɛ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Głogów, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. It lies approximately 2 km (1 mi) south of Głogów, and 89 km (55 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław.

The Andreas Gryphius Theatre in Głogów - a classical theater building located in Głogów, in the central part of the Old Town, next to the town hall. It was built in 1799 according to the design by Christian Valentin Schultze as the seat of a multi-department theater, offering several stage genres at once. The theater operated in the building almost until the end of World War II, when the edifice, along with the entire town, was destroyed as a result of the Soviet offensive on Głogów. In the following decades, different concepts of rebuilding the Głogów theater were proposed, but none of them was implemented. Eventually, the building was rebuilt to its pre-destruction condition in 2017-2019 to house a branch of the Municipal Cultural Center and at the same time host concerts and performances, as well as conferences.

The siege of Głogów or Defense of Głogów (German: Schlacht bei Glogau, Polish: Obrona Głogowa) was fought on 24 August 1109 at the Silesian town of Głogów, between the Kingdom of Poland and the Holy Roman Empire. Recorded by the medieval chronicler Gallus Anonymus, it is one of the most well known battles in Polish history. The Polish forces were led by Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth, while the Imperial forces were under the command of King Henry V of Germany. Bolesław was victorious.

The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Głogów is a Roman Catholic church located in the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Głogów, Poland, within the Diocese of Zielona Góra-Gorzów. It rises above the oldest district of Głogów, Ostrów Tumski. It is currently undergoing reconstruction after damage sustained during World War II. Built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, it is one of the oldest churches in Silesia and the oldest collegiate church in Silesia. Its origins date back to the first Polish monarchs from the Piast dynasty.

Jaczów [ˈjat͡ʂuf] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Jerzmanowa, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. It lies approximately 5 km (3 mi) north-east of Jerzmanowa, 3 km (2 mi) south of Głogów, and 87 km (54 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław. The village has an approximate population of 1,000.

Grodziec Mały [ˈɡrɔd͡ʑɛt͡s ˈmawɨ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Głogów, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland.It lies approximately 3 km (2 mi) north of Głogów, and 92 km (57 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław.

Serby ([ˈsɛrbɨ]) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Głogów, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland.It lies approximately 0.16 km (160.0 m) north-east of Głogów, and 89 km (55 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław.

Sobczyce [sɔpˈt͡ʂɨt͡sɛ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Kotla, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in southwestern Poland. Prior to 1945 it was in Germany.

Smardzów [ˈsmard͡zuf] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Jerzmanowa, within Głogów County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. It lies approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) north-east of Jerzmanowa, 6 km (4 mi) south of Głogów, and 87 km (54 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław. According to Jankowski, Smardzów (also Smarzewo) was registered as Szwedowo in 1507 (at the old Duchy of Głogów).
