Pownal, Vermont

Pownal Center is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. It is in southwestern Bennington County, in the geographic center of the town of Pownal. U.S. Route 7 is the main road through the village, leading north 6 miles (10 km) to Bennington and south 8 miles (13 km) to Williamstown, Massachusetts.

It is in southwestern Bennington County, in the southwest part of the town of Pownal, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the Vermont–Massachusetts border. The Hoosic River, a west-flowing tributary of the Hudson River, forms the western edge of the village. Vermont Route 346 passes through the center of the village, leading northwest 3 miles (5 km) to North Pownal. It has its southern terminus in the eastern part of Pownal village, at U.S. Route 7, which leads north 9 miles (14 km) to Bennington and south 5 miles (8 km) to Williamstown.

Mooar-Wright House (also known as the Defoe-Mooar-Wright House) is a historic house in Pownal, Vermont that is one of the oldest in Vermont. The house was built in c. 1750 or 1764.) and is possibly the oldest house in Vermont. Some believe that the house was built by the Dutch, and others believe that it was built by John Defoe, a British loyalist imprisoned there. The construction date has not yet been verified with dendrochronology.

Green Mountain Race Track was an American horse racing and a greyhound racing track located in Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont that operated from 1963 to 1993.

North Pownal is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. It is in southwestern Bennington County, in the western part of the town of Pownal, 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Vermont–New York border. The Hoosic River, a west-flowing tributary of the Hudson River, flows through the center of the community. Vermont Route 346 is the main road through the village, leading southeast 3 miles (5 km) to U.S. Route 7 at Pownal village. To the northwest, VT 346/NY 346 leads 4 miles (6 km) to North Petersburg, New York.

Mountain Meadow Preserve is a 180-acre (73 ha) open space preserve located in the Berkshires and Green Mountains of northwest Massachusetts and adjacent Vermont in the towns of Williamstown and Pownal. The property, acquired in 1998 by the land conservation non-profit organization The Trustees of Reservations, includes highland meadows, wetlands, forested hills, and 4 miles (6.4 km) of trails.Located on Mason Hill (a sub-peak of The Dome), the preserve is open to hiking, cross-country skiing, and similar passive pursuits. Views from the property include Mount Greylock and the Taconic Mountains to the west. Trailheads are located on Mason Road in Williamstown and White Oaks Road in Pownal.

One World Conservation Center (abbreviated OWCC, formerly New England Tropical Conservatory, abbreviated NETC) is a botanical garden featuring a large tropical greenhouse, located in Bennington, Vermont. One World Conservation Center downsized in 2018 and 2019 and partially dissolved its assets due to financial struggles.

WHAZ-FM (97.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a religious format. Licensed to Hoosick Falls, New York, United States, the station serves the easternmost portion of the Capital District, Bennington, Vermont, and North Adams, Massachusetts as a satellite of WHAZ. The station is owned by Capital Media Corporation.

Southern Vermont College was a private college on the 371-acre (1.50 km2) former Edward Everett Estate (originally The Orchards) near Bennington, Vermont. The college closed in 2019.

The Bennington Fish Hatchery, also known as the Bennington Fish Culture Station, is a state-operated fish hatchery at 110 Hatchery Road in Bennington, Vermont, USA. The station, the state's largest, produces a variety of trout, which are used to stock the state's water resources. Its facilities, dating to 1916, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The station has a visitors' center that is open daily.

The Col. Benjamin Simonds House is a historic house at 643 Simonds Road in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The colonial style wood-frame house was built in 1770 by Benjamin Simonds, a veteran of the French and Indian Wars, who was one of Williamstown's early settlers. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and now houses a bed and breakfast.

The Bennington-2-2 Representative District is a two-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Bennington-2-2 District includes part of the Bennington County town of Bennington defined as follows: [t]hat portion of the town of Bennington encompassed by a border beginning at the intersection of VT 7 and the Pownal town line, then northerly on the easterly side of VT 7 to the intersection with Monument Avenue, then northerly along the easterly side of Monument Avenue to the intersection with Dewey Street, then northerly along the easterly side of Dewey Street to the intersection with West Main Street, then southeasterly on the southerly side of West Main Street to the intersection with North Street, then northerly along the easterly side of North Street to the intersection with County Street, then easterly along the southerly side of County Street to the intersection with Park Street, then northerly along the easterly side of Park Street to the intersection with Roaring Branch River, then easterly along the southerly side of the river to the intersection with VT 9, then easterly along VT 9 to the intersection with the Bennington-Woodford town line, then southerly along the westerly side of the Bennington-Woodford town line to the intersection with the Bennington-Pownal town line, then westerly along the northerly side of the Bennington-Pownal town line to the point of beginning.(Vermont Statutes, Title 17, Chapter 34, Section 1893a) [1] The remainder of the town is in Bennington-2-1. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The two member Bennington-2-2 District had a population of 7,798 in that same census, 3.94% below the state average.
