Estero Llano Grande State Park is located south of the city of Weslaco in Hidalgo County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Villa Verde is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 874 at the 2010 United States Census. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Weslaco is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census the population was 41,103, and in 2020 the estimated population was 41,103. It is located at the southern tip of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley near the Mexican border, across the Rio Grande from the city of Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas. Weslaco derives its name from the W.E. Stewart Land Company. It was the hometown of Harlon Block, one of the Marines photographed raising the flag at Iwo Jima, and of film and television actor David Spielberg. Streets north of the railroad tracks have Spanish names, and streets south of the railroad tracks bear names in English, as a consequence of a 1921 municipal ordinance which declared that land north of the tracks be reserved for Hispanic residences and businesses, and land south of the tracks be reserved for "Anglo" residences and businesses. During World War II, sandbag production reached a peak in Weslaco, and the town declared itself the "sandbagging capital of the world". Weslaco is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas.

Biblioteca Las Américas (BLA) is the main library of the South Texas Independent School District.

South Texas ISD Health Professions (Health Professions) is one of four STISD magnet high schools in the Rio Grande Valley and is located in Mercedes, Texas. Students at Health Professions develop clinical skills in area hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies, as well as doctor, dentist and veterinary offices. Many students earn certifications as certified nursing assistants, dental assistants, emergency medical technicians, personal trainers and veterinary assistants.

Progreso is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 5,507 at the time of the 2010 United States Census. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas.

South Texas ISD Science Academy (formerly known as The Science Academy of South Texas), also known as "SciTech", is a high school in Mercedes, Texas, United States, as part of the South Texas Independent School District. This campus is ranked among the top 1% Best Public High Schools in America.The school serves as an alternative to high schools of local independent school districts for students interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, and engineering. The school's unique curriculum has given it national recognition. Being a public magnet school, open enrollment has been the school's policy since its creation, although application is required. The Science Academy is part of the South Texas Independent School District which is ranked #9 out of 10,758 school districts in the United States. The South Texas ISD Science Academy has partnerships with Cornell University, Stanford University, Rice University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Texas-Pan American and South Texas College. Its sister school South Texas ISD Health Professions, commonly known as "Med High", resides on the same campus. Both schools are served by Biblioteca Las Américas, the campus library, which is located at equal distance from both schools. The Science Academy has no athletics department, but students participate in academic competitions regularly. In 2008, The Science Academy gym was completed, no longer sharing with the Med High gym. A study called The Science Academy a "dropout factory," citing a 55% retention rate.As of the 2018-19 school year, the school had an enrollment of 731 students and 54.42 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 13:1.

Valley Nature Center is a 6-acre park and nature preserve in Gibson City Park, Weslaco, Texas. Its focus is environmental education about the natural history of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The center's activities include a summer camp, weekly programs for all ages, birding trips, natural history classes and lectures. There are programs for individuals, children and adults. There is a native plant nursery with plants for sale, a conservation resource library and a gift shop.

Mid Valley Airport (ICAO: KTXW, FAA LID: TXW) (formerly FAA LID T65) is the main airport serving Weslaco, Texas, United States. In 2021, the city partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation and other agencies to expand the airport, constructing two new hangars and six spaces for jets. The investment cost $19 million and is expected to bring 100 jobs to the community.

The Battle of La Bolsa was a major event in the Cortina War, a series of armed confrontations between the milita of Mexican rancher Juan Cortina and elements of the United States Army and the Texas Rangers. The battle occurred on February 4, 1860, when Cortina's forces attacked the steamboat Ranchero on its way to Brownsville.

The Battle of La Ebonal was fought in December 1859 near Brownsville, Texas during the First Cortina War. Following the Brownsville Raid, on September 28, and a few skirmishes with the Texas Rangers, rebel leader Juan Cortina led his small army into the hills outside of town and dug in near a series of cattle ranches. The United States Army responded by sending an expedition into the area, under the command of Major Samuel P. Heintzelman, with orders to pacify all resistance. A minor battle began on December 13, at a ranch called La Ebonal, and continued for a few hours as the Americans routed and then pursued the retreating Cortinistas.

Weslaco High School was founded in 1921 alongside the Weslaco Independent School District, and was the first high school serving Weslaco, Texas until the construction of Weslaco East High School in fall 2000. As of today, the high school's present location has not changed since 1973. For the 2009–2010 school year, Weslaco High School is currently a TEA "Recognized" School.Weslaco High serves the following areas: Much of Weslaco, Villa Verde, half of Olivarez, the WISD portion of Midway South, the WISD portion of Midway North, and a section of the WISD portion of Mila Doce.
