It is approximately 6.2 miles (10.0 km) long and flows through Liberty Township in Montour County and East Chillisquaque Township in Northumberland County. The watershed of the stream has an area of 12.0 square miles (31 km2). Reaches of the stream are designated as impaired due to siltation caused by agriculture. Numerous bridges have been constructed across it and it lacks a riparian buffer in some reaches.

It may be the oldest covered wooden bridge in the United States.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

It is the sole high school operated by the Milton Area School District. In 2013, the Milton Area High School reported an enrollment of 669 pupils in grades 9th through 12th. At 10,500 watts, WQSU is the most powerful student-run college FM radio station in Pennsylvania, and as such it serves approximately one-third of the state with a variety of music, news, information, public affairs, and sports programming, 365 days a year. Its broadcast tower is located east of Lewisburg.The operation of WQSU-FM serves two separate and distinct purposes. Milton Armory is a historic National Guard armory located at Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was designed by W.G. Wilkins Co. It was built in 1922 and expanded in 1930. It is a "T"-plan building consisting of a two-story administration building with a one-story drill hall executed in the Tudor Revival style. It is constructed of brick and sits on a concrete foundation. It features stone window and door surrounds.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
