Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania

Harveys Lake (also known as Harvey Lake or Harvey's Lake) is a natural lake in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It has a surface area of approximately 621.5 acres, or nearly a square mile. The lake is situated entirely within the borough of Harveys Lake. By volume, it is the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania, and by surface area, is the second-largest lake. It is a glacial lake surrounded by hills and is the source of Harveys Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River. The lake has a stone masonry dam. The lake's watershed has an area of approximately 3600 acres. The majority of the watershed is forested, but there is some developed land as well. Nearly all of the developed land is close to the lake itself, and the lake is surrounded entirely by a paved road. Harveys Lake was affected by algae blooms from the mid-20th century onward, and these algae blooms were caused by pollution of nutrients, especially phosphorus. The lake was identified as impaired in 1994, with an annual phosphorus load of 1,019 pounds (462 kg). However, the phosphorus load has been reduced somewhat since then. The lake is listed on the Luzerne County Natural Areas Inventory. A number of rare or endangered plant species have been observed in its vicinity. Various species of fish inhabit the lake and a number of bird species have been observed in its vicinity. Harveys Lake was accidentally discovered by Benjamin Harvey in 1781. The first settlers arrived at the lake in the 1790s and 1800s. Early industries in the area included lumbering and farming, but it became well known as a summer resort in the latter part of the 1800s and into the 1900s. It was also used as a water supply in the early 1900s. However, the lake began to develop significant environmental problems in the 1960s and a total maximum daily load was created for it in 1994. Since 1968, the lake has been located in the borough of Harveys Lake.

The Bud Light Amphitheatre was a 4,500-seat amphitheatre located in Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania. It opened in 1992 and closed in 1998. It hosted major artists such as Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Johnny Cash, Dream Theater, Sammy Hagar, Scorpions, Hall & Oates, Stone Temple Pilots, John Denver and Kenny Rogers.

Bear Hollow Creek is a tributary of Harveys Creek in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 2.0 miles (3.2 km) long and flows through Lake Township. The creek was used as a water supply in the early 1900s. During glacial times, its valley, Bear Hollow, served as a glacial sluiceway. The surficial geology near the creek features alluvium, Wisconsinan Till, Wisconsinan Boulder Till, a peat bog, and bedrock consisting of sandstone and shale. Bear Hollow is listed on the Luzerne County Natural Areas Inventory.

It is approximately 7.7 miles (12.4 km) long and flows through Lake Township in Luzerne County and Noxen Township in Wyoming County. The watershed of the stream has an area of 10.6 square miles (27 km2). It is not designated as an impaired waterbody. The surficial geology in its vicinity includes alluvial fan, alluvial terrace, alluvium, Wisconsinan Till, Wisconsinan Ice-Contact Stratified Drift, fill, wetlands, and bedrock. Beaver Run is a source of flooding in Lake Township, Luzerne County. A number of bridges have also been constructed over Beaver Run. The watershed of the stream is designated as a High Quality Coldwater Fishery and a Migratory Fishery.

Paint Spring Run (also known as Painter Spring Run) is a tributary of Harveys Creek in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 3.0 miles (4.8 km) long and flows through Lake Township. The watershed of the stream has an area of 2.35 square miles (6.1 km2). It has one named tributary. Wild trout inhabit Paint Spring Run. Wisconsinan Till, Wisconsinan Bouldery Till, Wisconsinan Ice-Contact Stratified Drift, alluvium, peat bogs, wetlands, and bedrock consisting of sandstone and shale all occur in the surficial geology in the stream's vicinity.

Lake Lehman Junior Senior High School is a public school in Lehman Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States that was established by the merger of a Middle Level Educational Building, which provided an education from grades seven to eight, and a high school, which did the same for grades nine to twelve. Basic classes are offered for everyone, but the school also offers advanced courses, and Advanced Placement classes for college preparation.
