Throop, Pennsylvania

Lackawanna County (; Unami: Lèkaohane) is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania and had a population of 215,896 as of the 2020 census. Its county seat and largest city is Scranton.The county was created on August 13, 1878, following decades of trying to gain its independence from Luzerne County. Lackawanna was Pennsylvania's last county to be created, and the only county to be created after the American Civil War. It is named for the Lackawanna River.Lackawanna County is the second largest county in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton, PA Metropolitan statistical area. It lies northwest of the Pocono Mountains approximately 40 miles (64 km) from the New Jersey border in Montague Township, and approximately 25 miles (40 km) from New York state in Kirkwood. The Lehigh River, a 109-mile-long (175 km) tributary of the Delaware River, flows through Lackawanna County.

Penn State Scranton (formerly known as Penn State Worthington Scranton) is a Commonwealth Campus of Pennsylvania State University located in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. The Scranton campus was named in memory of Worthington Scranton, a prominent industrialist and civic leader of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Mid Valley Secondary Center is a small, public combined junior high and senior high school located in Throop, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It is the sole high school and junior high school operated by Mid Valley School District. In 2014, enrollment was reported as 786 pupils in 7th through 12th grades. The school employed 25 teachers (9-12). The school is a federally designated Title I School. High school aged students may choose to attend Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County for training in various careers including: construction and mechanical trades. The Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit, IU19, provides the district with a wide variety of services like specialized education for disabled students and hearing, speech and visual disability services and professional development for staff and faculty.

Price Creek (also known as Price's Creek) is a tributary of the Lackawanna River in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 2.0 miles (3.2 km) long and flows through Dickson City. The watershed of the creek's main stem has an area of 0.790 square miles (2.05 km2). Culm was historically discharged into the creek at the Johnson Colliery. Requests have been made in the 20th and 21st centuries for permission to discharge sewage and stormwater into the creek.

Pancoast Creek (also known as Trib 28544 Of Lackawanna River) is a tributary of Price Creek in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 2.0 miles (3.2 km) long and flows through Dickson City. The watershed of the creek has an area of 0.880 square miles (2.28 km2). Part of the watershed is on coal measures. The creek was historically affected by streams of surface water and sewage. A number of wetlands are in the creek's vicinity.

Eddy Creek is a tributary of the Lackawanna River in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 5.7 miles (9.2 km) long and flows through Olyphant and Throop. The watershed of the creek has an area of 7.53 square miles (19.5 km2). The creek experiences serious flow loss and is considered to be impaired. It has a natural channel in some reaches, but its channel disappears in other reaches. Rock formations in the creek's vicinity include the Catskill Formation and the Llewellyn Formation. The creek is a second-order stream. A bridge carrying Pennsylvania Route 347 across Eddy Creek was built in the 20th century. More recently, a restoration of 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of the creek has been planned. The creek is designated as a Warmwater Fishery and a Migratory Fishery. A greenway/connecting trail in the vicinity of the creek was proposed in the early 2000s in the Lackawanna River Watershed Conservation Plan.

Marywood University is a private Catholic university in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Established in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Marywood currently enrolls more than 2,800 students in a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The university has a national arboretum with more than 100 types of trees and shrubs.

Dickson City is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, 4 miles (6 km) north of Scranton. Coal mining was an important industry in the past. The borough's population peaked at 12,395 in 1930 and was 6,051 at the 2020 census.

Olyphant is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is six miles (10 km) northeast of downtown Scranton, on the Lackawanna River in the heart of the anthracite region of the state. Its main source of employment was the mining and shipping of coal. It was the headquarters of the Lackawanna Coal Company. Other industries of the past were the manufacturing of blasting powder, iron and steel goods, cigars, and silks. Olyphant experienced a severe downturn in the 1950s. There was once a thriving garment industry with numerous dress factories in the downtown area. There was also a slaughterhouse. Until 2018, the biggest industry was Cinram the manufacture of compact discs (CD) and digital video discs (DVD). The population was 5,395 at the 2020 census.

The Mid Valley Region refers to the towns of Dickson City, Olyphant, Throop, and Blakely in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, US. The area was once known for anthracite coal mining and is considered a smaller section of the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. The Mid Valley School District only includes the towns of Olyphant, Dickson City and Throop, although it may sometimes service Archibald and some other nearby locations.

Holy Cross High School is a Roman Catholic secondary school located in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Scranton, and is the second largest of four diocesan high schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Holy Cross School System has included five feeder schools since the 2011-2012 school year: All Saints Academy, Scranton; LaSalle Academy, Dickson City and Jessup; Our Lady of Peace, Clarks Summit; St. Clare/St. Paul, Scranton; and St. Mary of Mount Carmel, Dunmore.

Dunmore High School is the secondary education, public school for the borough of Dunmore, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Dunmore School District. Dunmore High School is located at 300 West Warren Street. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the 2017–2018 school year, Dunmore High School reported an enrollment of 728 pupils in grades 7 through 12.Dunmore High School is one of the three (Scranton, Old Forge, Dunmore) school districts in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania that does not include surrounding boroughs. In June 2014, Dunmore School Board closed the junior high school and consolidated the 7th and 8th grades into the high school building. The middle school functions separately from the high school.
