Hamilton College is a private liberal arts college in Clinton, New York. It was established as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793 and received its charter as Hamilton College in 1812, in honor of Alexander Hamilton, one of its inaugural trustees, following a proposal made after his death in 1804. Since 1978, Hamilton has been a coeducational institution, having merged with its sister school, Kirkland College. Hamilton enrolled approximately 2,000 undergraduate students as of the fall of 2021. The curriculum offers 57 areas of study, including 44 majors, as well as the option to design interdisciplinary concentrations. The student body consists of 53% female and 47% male students, representing 45 U.S. states and 46 countries. The acceptance rate for the class of 2026 was 11.8%. Hamilton's athletic teams participate in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Azel Backus (October 13, 1765 – December 28, 1816) was an American educator, born in New London County, Connecticut. After having a long preaching career, he was elected as the first President of Hamilton College in New York. He died on December 28, 1816, in Clinton, New York, at the age of 51 and is buried in Hamilton College Cemetery.

College Hill represents an approach to, and landing on, a plateau in the Central New York Region of New York, further located in the Town of Kirkland, west of Clinton. Hamilton College is located on College Hill.

The Russell Sage Rink in Clinton, New York, is an indoor, artificial ice rink owned and operated by Hamilton College. The venue was the first on-campus rink built in the United States, predating the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink by a year.

Kirkland College was a small, private liberal arts women's college located in Clinton, New York, from 1965 to 1978. It was a female counterpart to Hamilton College, at that time all male, and its campus was adjacent to Hamilton's. It was named for Samuel Kirkland, who founded the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, origin of Hamilton College (and for whom, some felt, Hamilton should have been named). It was not successful financially, so Hamilton absorbed Kirkland on June 30, 1978, has maintained its archives and financial endowment, and supports its alumnae community.

Harding Farm is a historic site west of the village of Clinton in Oneida County, New York, United States. It is located on New York State Route 233 (Harding Road) and is situated 0.4 miles (0.6 km) south of the junction of NY 233 and New York State Route 412. It was built by Samuel Kirkland in 1793. Kirkland, missionary to the Oneida Indians and founder of Hamilton College, received 4,000 acres (1,600 ha) from the state of New York following the American Revolution. Colonists and Oneida people traveling the Oriskany Valley were frequent and welcome visitors. Oneida Chief Skenandoa, who had played a critical role in aiding the Colonists during the revolution, advised Kirkland on the ideal site to build his home. In 1816, Skenandoa requested to be buried next to Kirkland in the orchard behind Kirkland's house in order to "go up with him at the great resurrection." The bodies were later exhumed and moved to the Hamilton College cemetery. In 1851, Lyman S. Harding purchased the property and converted it to a dairy farm. In 1905, it was sold to Elihu Root, a native of nearby Clinton and Secretary of State for President Theodore Roosevelt. The Harding Family bought the property back in 1912 with considerably less land than it once had. Today, Harding Farm is a private residence.

Franklin Springs is a hamlet in Oneida County, New York, United States. The community is located along New York State Route 12B, 1.1 miles (1.8 km) southwest of Clinton. Franklin Springs has a post office with ZIP code 13341.

Rev. Asahel Norton Homestead is a historic home and farm complex located at Kirkland in Oneida County, New York. The owner, Rev. Asahel Norton (Sept. 20, 1765-May 10, 1853) was a graduate of Yale College. He became known in later life for his interest in pomology, and for his apple trees. He was one of the founders of Hamilton College. The home was built about 1797 and is a two-story wood-frame structure with a five bay, center hall configuration in a vernacular Federal style. Also on the property are the original well, chicken coop and animal barn, and fruit orchard. The homestead was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

The Kirkland Town Library is located at 55 1⁄2 College St., Clinton, New York. It was founded in 1901, with a modest 1,000 volumes, donated by the closed Houghton Seminary, and occupies what was originally the Sigma Phi fraternity house at Hamilton College. Elihu Root, a Hamilton alumnus and native of Clinton, at the time Secretary of War under President McKinley, was instrumental in helping the library get started. The Kirkland Art Center (1960–1966) and the Clinton Historical Society (1966–1993) housed their collections on the second floor of the library building, but both have since been relocated to repurposed church buildings on the Clinton Green. The Library is a member of the Mid-York Library System. In 2013, the library had 71,552 visits, 100,657 circulated items, and 5,500 answered reference questions.

Kirkland is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 10,075 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Samuel Kirkland, a missionary among the Oneidas. The Town of Kirkland is southwest of Utica. In 1829, part of Kirkland was used to form the newer Town of Marshall. Hamilton College is located in the western part of the town. Clinton is the only village in the town of Kirkland.
