St. Austin's Military School is a defunct American military academy formerly located in the West Brighton section of Staten Island, New York. The school was founded in 1883 by the Rev. Alfred G. Mortimer with the name St. Austin's Episcopal School for Boys. The name of the school was soon changed to St. Austin's Military School. In 1898, it moved to Connecticut. While on Staten Island the school was housed in the former Garner Mansion near the corner of Castleton and Bard Avenues. The building still exists as part of the campus of Richmond University Medical Center. A nearby street named St. Austin's Place is a reminder of the school.

West New Brighton (also called West Brighton) is a neighborhood of Staten Island, New York City, situated along the central North Shore. The neighborhood is bordered by New Brighton to the east, Port Richmond to the west, the waters of the Kill Van Kull to the north, and the communities of Sunnyside and Castleton Corners to the south. Randall Manor is a neighborhood on the North Shore of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City, United States. The neighborhood is bound by Bard Avenue to the West, Henderson Avenue to the North, Forest Avenue to the South, and Lafayette Avenue to the East. Named after Captain Robert Richard Randall, the founder of Sailors Snug Harbor, the neighborhood lies immediately to the south of the latter, between New Brighton and West Brighton.

The Staten Island Children's Museum is a children's museum on the grounds of Sailors' Snug Harbor on Staten Island, New York. The museum opened in 1976 following community and government support for the project. The museum stresses a hands-on interactive approach to its exhibits. A large metal sculpture of a praying mantis, named Francis the Praying Mantis, is located in front of the museum.

The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden (simplified Chinese: 寄兴园; traditional Chinese: 寄興園; pinyin: Jìxīng Yuán; Jyutping: Gei3hing1 Jyun4) is part of the Staten Island Botanical Garden, located in the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Materials were shipped to Staten Island in the spring of 1998, when a team of 40 Chinese artists and artisans from Suzhou constructed the garden. It opened in June of 1999. President of the Botanical Garden Frances Paulo Huber recognized the need for an authentic Chinese garden in 1984. The garden was finally constructed with the support of many partners, including the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the City of New York, the Landscape Architecture Company of China, the Metropolitan Chinese American Community, various private foundations, and hundreds of individuals and corporate donors. After a long series of collaborations a contract was signed with the Landscape Architecture Corporation of China. Mr. Zou Gongwu was appointed as chief project designer.

Calvary Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church complex at 909 Castleton Avenue in West New Brighton, Staten Island, New York. www.calvarypresby.org The complex consists of the Romanesque/Tudor Revival-style church building (built 1894, addition 1952), parish house (1930), manse (1919), and a one car garage. Boy Scouts of America have been part of Calvary's Mission since 1984. Today they have a Cub Pack, a Troop and a Venture Crew. Calvary's Scouting Units 19 were founded in West Brighton, Staten Island in 1916 and moved to Calvary in 1984 Calvary was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Sailors' Snug Harbor, also known as Sailors Snug Harbor and informally as Snug Harbor, is a collection of architecturally significant 19th-century buildings on Staten Island, New York City. The buildings are set in an 83-acre (34 ha) park along the Kill Van Kull in New Brighton, on the North Shore of Staten Island. Some of the buildings and the grounds are used by arts organizations under the umbrella of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. Sailors' Snug Harbor was founded as a retirement home for sailors after Captain Robert Richard Randall bequeathed funds for that purpose upon his 1801 death. Snug Harbor opened in 1833 as a sailors' retirement home located within what is now Building C, and additional structures were built on the grounds in later years. The buildings became a cultural center after the sailors' home moved away in 1976. The grounds and buildings are operated by Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, a nonprofit, Smithsonian-affiliated organization. Sailors' Snug Harbor includes 26 Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate and Victorian style buildings. Among those are "Temple Row", five interlocking Greek Revival buildings labeled A through E. The buildings are set in extensive, landscaped grounds, surrounded by the 19th-century cast-iron fence. The grounds also include a chapel and a sailors' cemetery. The cultural center includes the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the Staten Island Children's Museum, the Staten Island Museum, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, and the Noble Maritime Collection, as well as the Art Lab and the Music Hall. The site is considered Staten Island's "crown jewel" and "an incomparable remnant of New York's 19th-century seafaring past." It is a National Historic Landmark District. Several buildings in the complex are New York City designated landmarks.

St. Peter's Boys High School is an American Catholic all-boys' high school, located in the West New Brighton area of the Staten Island borough of New York City, New York. The school is affiliated with the Christian Brothers of St. John Baptist de la Salle, and is a member of the Catholic High School Athletic Association. The school is located at 200 Clinton Avenue and is part of St. Peter's parish on Staten Island, which also ran a grammar school and all-girls' high school.

Francis the Praying Mantis is the name of a sculpture depicting a praying mantis. The sculpture is located on the East Meadow in front of the Staten Island Children's Museum, on the grounds of Sailors' Snug Harbor, in Staten Island, New York.The original sculpture, built in 1991, was constructed from wood. It was designed and built by New York artist Robert Ressler.In 2011, the original was demolished due to water damage and, ironically, insect infestation. Francis was redesigned, fabricated and donated by self-taught Staten Island artist Lenny Prince. Francis "2.0" is crafted from over 50 pieces of sculpted metals, including sheet metal and stainless steel, various sized muffler pipes, re-bar and other found metal objects. The realistic multi-lensed eyes are crafted from catalytic converters.

The 2007 Brooklyn tornado was the strongest tornado on record to strike in New York City. It formed in the early morning hours of August 8, 2007, skipping along an approximately 9 miles (14 km)-long path, from Staten Island across The Narrows to Brooklyn. The worst damage was in and around Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, in Brooklyn. The U.S. National Weather Service estimated its strength there as an EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.No serious injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the tornado, but several people were treated at area hospitals for flying glass injuries. At least 40 buildings and 100 cars were damaged. New York State Senator Martin Golden’s office estimated damage in the tens of millions of U.S. dollars.The storm system produced severe street flooding, and disrupted all modes of transportation throughout the city. Service was delayed or suspended on all 24 New York City Subway services during the morning rush hour, and nine services were still not running by the evening rush.
