Puente Alto (Spanish: "High Bridge") is a city and commune of Chile. It is the capital of the Cordillera Province in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Located at the south of the Great Santiago conurbation (of which it is part), it houses 568,106 inhabitants (city proper, 2017 census), making it the most populous commune in Chile.

Plaza de Puente Alto is an underground metro station and the southern terminal station of Line 4 of the Santiago Metro network, in Santiago, Chile. The station is located under the square of the same name, Plaza de Puente Alto, parallel to Concha y Toro Avenue at the junction with Manuel Rodríguez avenue in the commune of Puente Alto. The station was opened to the public on November 30, 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto. The station's surroundings are dominated by municipal buildings like the civil registry office of Puente Alto, the Provincia Cordillera (Cordillera Province) building, and the old municipality building. There is a very active community of independent retail stores along with department stores that opened after the arrival of the metro station. In Plaza de Puente Alto square there is a statue of Manuel Rodríguez, a Chilean independentist hero. The station and square are a popular pick-up and connection point for taxis, share taxis, buses that go to different parts of south Santiago and throughout Cordillera Province, of which Puente Alto is the capital. Puente Alto is one of the most densely populated communes in the country, which is one of the reasons for the construction of the metro line and Plaza de Puente Alto metro station. In recent years, Puente Alto has had one of the fastest growing real estate sectors of all the Chilean communes, seeing 20% of total Santiago real estate sales. This rise is mainly due to the construction of houses for middle-class sectors, partly influenced by the extension of the metro network into this part of the city.

Las Mercedes is an underground metro station located on Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It lies opposite Concha y Toro Avenue between Independencia Street and Domingo Tocornal Avenue. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.The area around the station, which in the past held fields and empty land, has become a commercial hub with business and real estate development. The station has exits connecting directly with two shopping centres, one on either side of Concha y Toro Avenue, and the Independencia Square and Espacio Urbano shopping malls. Between both malls lie two movie theaters, several department stores, three supermarkets, along with banks, drugstores and fast-food chains.

The Autódromo Las Vizcachas is a motorsport racing circuit located in Puente Alto, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile. It was opened on October 5, 1965, and was in operation for 41 years. In 2006, it was closed to give way to a real estate project close to the circuit, which implied the prohibition of the development of motor tests in the layout, but in 2012 races were held again.

Protectora de la Infancia station is an elevated metro station located on the overhead section of Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It named after the Protectora de la Infancia (“Childhood Protectoress”) children's charity, whose headquarters are just opposite the station. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.The station is located in the commune of Puente Alto on Concha y Toro Avenue, near the junction with Angel Pimentel Street. It has disabled access. The number of passengers passing through this station is relatively low, except in rush hours when traffic increases dramatically. The station's surroundings include the Compañia de Jesus Catholic school, Los Nogales School, Las Nieves School, and a public-owned swimming pool, along with its namesake.

Bajos de Mena is an urban sector located in the southwest of Puente Alto commune, at the southernmost end of Greater Santiago in Chile. It is a neglected sector of the city of Santiago, with a lot of poverty and overcrowding population. It has about 140 thousand inhabitants, but it lacks various services such as pharmacies, bank branches, among others. It is almost exclusively made up of social housing built under the government of Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle in the 1990s. These characteristics led to the denomination of the "largest ghetto of Chile". In the mid-2010s, this situation gradually began to improve thanks to a comprehensive plan for the sector, which included the creation of the Juan Pablo II Park inaugurated in 2013, the construction of the 66th Carabineros police station inaugurated in 2017, and the demolition and removal of buildings and debris from Villa El Volcán, for the construction of a civic center instead. Due to its large population -similar to cities such as Curicó and Punta Arenas-, its geographic isolation, its lack of services and a considerable distance of 5 km to the civic center of Puente Alto -which is also the most populated commune in Chile-, there are proposals for the sector to achieve communal independence, in conjunction with neighboring parts of La Pintana and San Bernardo.

Hospital Sótero del Río station is an elevated metro station located on the overhead section of Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It is named after the Sótero del Río Hospital, which is directly surrounding the station. The station is located in Concha y Toro Avenue near its junction with Gabriela Avenue. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.The station's surroundings include the Sótero del Río Hospital, the Josefina Martínez children's hospital, schools, a religious centre, local stores, a supermarket, and the 38th Comisaría de Puente Alto police station. The location of this station makes it useful for patients of both hospitals. Unusually for an elevated station, the ticket office and concourse are located underground. This is to create extra space due to the large number of commuters travelling through the station.

Elisa Correa station is an elevated metro station located on the overhead section of Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. The station is located on the boundary between the communes of Puente Alto and La Florida, and is the last station of the line 4 on the Cordillera province heading into the center of Santiago. It is named after the street where it is located, the junction of Elisa Correa Sanfuentes Street to the west, Los Toros Venue to the east and Vicuña Mackenna Avenue to the north and Concha y Toro Avenue to the south. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.The station's surroundings include a filling station, a medical centre, local stores and a supermarket.

Los Quillayes is an elevated metro station on the Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It named for the neighborhood where it is located. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.

An assassination attempt was made on Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet on 7 September 1986, when members of the urban guerrilla group Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front ambushed a motorcade carrying the dictator to Santiago.

San José de la Estrella is an elevated metro station on the Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. This infill station was built between two operating metro stations on 5 November 2009.

Trinidad is an elevated metro station on the Line 4 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. The side platforms and tracks are wrapped in a large elliptical cross section tube. The station has a mezzanine area below the tracks. The station was opened on 30 November 2005 as part of the inaugural section of the line between Vicente Valdés and Plaza de Puente Alto.
