Ennis, Montana

Jeffers is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Montana, United States. It is in the eastern part of the county, on the east side of the valley of the Madison River. By road it is 2 miles (3 km) east of Ennis, which sits on the west side of the river. Jeffers was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.

The Thexton Ranch, also known as Thextondale, was established by George Thexton in 1872 on the Madison River about 7 miles (11 km) south of Ennis, Montana. The ranch is a significant example of an operating Montana ranch, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its prominence in local history and its character as a ranching operation.

Madison County is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,623. Its county seat is Virginia City. The county was founded in 1865; at the time it was part of the Montana Territory.

Fan Mountain, 'el. 10,312 feet (3,143 m) is a prominent peak in the Madison Range in Madison County, Montana in the Beaverhead National Forest. The peak is located along the western face of the Madison Range at the northern end of the range. It is due east of Ennis Lake and its prominence and isolation makes it easy to distinguish from Ennis in the Madison River valley. Jack and Cedar creeks are tributaries of the Madison River with headwaters on the eastern and western face of Fan Mountain. The mountain straddles the northern boundary of the Spanish Peaks parcel of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area.

Virginia City is a town in and the county seat of Madison County, Montana, United States. In 1961 the town and the surrounding area were designated a National Historic Landmark District, the Virginia City Historic District. The population was 219 at the 2020 census.

Norris is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Madison County, Montana, United States, at the intersection of U.S. Route 287 and Montana Highway 84. As of the 2020 census, the first where it was listed as a CDP, the population was 46.

Nevada City ( niv-AY-də) is an unincorporated community in Madison County, Montana, United States. In the 1860s, it was one of two centers of commerce in what was known as one of the richest gold strikes in the Rocky Mountain West, along with its sister city Virginia City. As the gold played out and prospectors moved away, Nevada City gradually became a ghost town. Since the late 1950s, Nevada City has become a tourist attraction for its collection of nineteenth-century buildings within or surrounding the Nevada City Museum and Music Hall.

The Tobacco Root Mountains lie in the northern Rocky Mountains, between the Jefferson and Madison Rivers in southwest Montana. The highest peak is Hollowtop at 10,604 feet (3,232 m). The range contains 43 peaks rising to elevations greater than 10,000 feet (3048 m). Much of the central part of the range is within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, although many—mostly small—patented mining claims exist within the forest boundary. The range saw significant gold mining, especially during the 1880s to 1930s. The high peaks have been extensively glaciated, and most of the larger stream valleys held valley glaciers during the ice age.
