It is bordered by County Offaly to the south and a small part of County Roscommon at Long Island on the River Shannon to the west. The largest centre of population in the barony is the town of Moate.

Castledaly (Irish: Caisleán Uí Dhálaigh) is a village and electoral district in County Westmeath, Ireland. It is 5 km southwest of Moate and 11 km east of Athlone, on the R444 road.

Moate railway station is a former railway station which served the town of Moate in County Westmeath, Ireland. Previously a stop on the Midland Great Western Railway's main line to Galway and later on the main route between Dublin and stations in County Mayo, the station was closed in 1987. As of 2015, the line and station at Moate form part of the Athlone to Mullingar Cycleway.

Drumraney (Irish: Droim Raithne) is a village in the County Westmeath, Ireland, just off the R390 regional road between Athlone and Mullingar. It is part of a small parish with a population of approximately 240 which includes the nearby village of Tang. It is approximately 12 km (7 mi) from Athlone. Moate (; Irish: An Móta) is a town in County Westmeath, Ireland. As of the 2022 census, it had a population of 3,013. The town's Irish name, An Móta, is derived from the term motte-and-bailey, as the Normans built an example of this type of fortification here. The earthwork is still visible behind the buildings on the main street. The town later became an important marketplace and Quaker village. It made the town more wealthy than equivalent towns in Leinster. There are several extant examples of Quaker houses on the main street, which itself is typical of an Irish marketplace.

Baylin (; Irish: Béal Linne), also written Bealin is a village in County Westmeath, Ireland, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of Athlone. Its postal address is Baylin, Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. A medieval high cross stands in the eastern part of the village. Baylin and its 'sister' village, Mount Temple, form the only two in the parish of Ballyloughloe (often referred to as Caulry or Mount Temple).
