Battle of Halbe

Halbe (Lower Sorbian Łobje) is a municipality in the Dahme-Spreewald district of Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated near the capital city Berlin and the Spreewald. Four other villages are part of Halbe: Briesen/Brand with the Tropical Islands resorts of Dom, Teurow, Freidorf and Oderin. Halbe was the site of the Battle of Halbe during the final days of the Second World War.

Kaiserbahnhof Halbe is a railway station located in Halbe, on the main line between Berlin, which begins at the Görlitzer railway station, to Cottbus in Brandenburg and on to Görlitz in Saxony. It was built during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm I and used by his son Emperor Frederick III and his grandson Kaiser Wilhelm II between 1865 and 1912, when it as converted to offices and accommodation for railway workers. Having falling into disrepair in the 1990s it has now being restored to its 1865 state. Major works were completed in 2010, being the construction of a new roof and the restoration of two decorative towers at the north western and eastern corners of the building. In 2011, the first floor windows were repaired and all external brickwork repointed. In 2012, the ground floor windows and doors were restored with a start being made on the restoration of the large garden, to the south of the building. Since 2012 the restoration has been completed, with the 1865 building (the Altbau) having been fully restored. A new building to the north (the Neubau) has been built which is to house the kitchen, lavatories and ancillary facilities for the cafe's operation. The garden has been restored based on its 1865 design. The opening ceremony on 18 August 2019 was attended by Halbe's deputy mayor Michael Schnieke, the deputy New Zealand ambassador Alexandra Smithyman and guests which included more than 100 from New Zealand.

Tropical Islands Resort is a tropical water park located in the former Brand-Briesen Airfield in Halbe, a municipality in the district of Dahme-Spreewald in Brandenburg, Germany, 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the southern boundary of Berlin. It is housed in a former airship hangar (known as the Aerium), the biggest free-standing hall in the world. The hall belonged to the company Cargolifter until its insolvency in 2002. Tropical Islands has a maximum capacity of 8,200 visitors a day. In its first year of operation, it attracted 975,000 visitors, according to the operators. The Tanjong company reported 155,000 visitors in the business year February 2004 to February 2005. Approximately 600 people work at Tropical Islands. Tropical Islands has a world record for the largest indoor waterpark. It is bigger than Canada's World Waterpark at West Edmonton Mall. It is also the fourth-largest building in the world by usable volume.Parques Reunidos acquired Tropical Islands in December 2018.

Brand-Briesen Airfield is a redeveloped military air base located at Briesen/Brand, part of Halbe in Dahme-Spreewald, Brandenburg, Germany, about 60 km (37 mi) south-southeast of Berlin. Since 2004, the former CargoLifter airship hangar has been converted by a Malaysian company Tanjong into a leisure resort called Tropical Islands Resort.

Rankenheim is a mansion on Zemminsee in Groß Köris, Brandenburg, approx. 50 kilometres south of Berlin. In Nazi Germany it was used as a camp for educating teachers. After 1945 it became a temporary hospital and eventually a place for "maladjusted children" during the GDR regime - it is now a youth village. The surrounding district of Groß Köris is called Rankenheim.
