Lake Rotorua

Mokoia Island is located in Lake Rotorua in New Zealand. It has an area of 1.35 square kilometres. The uninhabited island is a rhyolite lava dome, rising to 180 metres above the lake surface. It was formed after the Rotorua caldera collapsed and rhyolitic magma was pushed through the cracks. One of the cracks was below where Mokoia island is today. The foreshores of the island have geothermal springs with hot spring water forming the Hinemoa pool, known to locals as Waikimihia. It also has very rich volcanic soil, which was why the local Māori grew kūmara on it. The stone statue of Matuatonga on the island protected the island's kūmara crop, and tohunga would bring seed kūmara to touch the statue. It was also a very good strategic location, which was why it was often fought over. Mokoia Island is privately owned by local Māori iwi, who run it in conjunction with the New Zealand Department of Conservation. It is a bird sanctuary and access is limited to tour parties only. It is home to several rare species, including the North Island kokako, the North Island brown kiwi, and a breeding population of the endangered North Island saddleback.The island is also the location of regular Mau rākau training camps in the Maori martial art of taiaha.

Koutu is a suburb of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand's North Island. Koutu was originally a home for the people of Ngati Whakaue and Ngāti Uenukukopako and has been in existence since before the establishment of Rotorua Township. It is located on the southwest shore of Lake Rotorua. The suburb has one marae. Koutu or Karenga Marae and Tumahaurangi meeting house is a meeting place of the Ngāti Whakaue hapū of Ngāti Karenga.

Te Papaiouru is a marae at Ohinemutu, Rotorua, New Zealand. It is the home marae of the Ngāti Whakaue subtribes Ngāti Tae-o-Tū and Ngāti Tūnohopū. The marae's carved wharenui (meeting house), Tamatekapua, is named after Tama-te-kapua, the chief or captain of the Te Arawa canoe, which came to New Zealand from Polynesia in about 1350.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Koutu is a co-educational Māori immersion school in Rotorua, New Zealand offering education within a unique Maori environment for Māori students from Year 1 to Year 13. Te Koutu students from year 1 - 13 learn Spanish as well as Māori and English.

Fairy Springs is a suburb of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located south of Ngongotahā, west of Koutu, east of Selwyn Heights, and north of Mangakakahi.A major arterial road, Fairy Springs Road, runs through the centre of the suburb. The busy road has been used for political protests. Motorists continued to use the road during severe flooding in April 2018.

Western Heights High School is a state co-educational secondary school located in the northwestern suburbs of Rotorua, New Zealand. In April 2013, 1,887 students from Years 9 to 13 (ages 12 to 18) attended the school, including 1,172 students identifying as Māori – the largest Māori school roll in New Zealand in terms of number of students.Western Heights High School offers Cambridge International Examinations in addition to the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).
