RAF Errol

The Carse of Gowrie is a stretch of low-lying country in the southern part of Gowrie, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It stretches for about 20 miles (30 kilometres) along the north shore of the Firth of Tay between Perth and Dundee. The area offers high-quality agricultural land and is well known as a major area for strawberry, raspberry and general fruit growing. Fruit is easy to cultivate in the area because of its southerly aspect and low rainfall. It has been suggested that monks brought new varieties of apples and pears to the area in the Middle Ages and there may have been vineyards growing on slopes near the River Tay.

The Inner Tay Estuary is the inner, western part of the Firth of Tay, from the Tay Railway Bridge in the east to the Queen's Bridge over the River Tay in Perth and the bridge in Bridge of Earn on the River Earn. It is one of the largest estuaries in eastern Scotland, and is up to 2.5 km wide. It consists primarily of intertidal sand and mud flats extending seaward to the main channel, most of which are on the northern shore. Landward of these are salt marsh and Phragmites reedbeds. The estuary contains two large islands: Mugdrum Island, opposite Newburgh; and Moncreiffe Island, immediately below Perth. The estuary's narrow form, and the large volume of freshwater from the Rivers Tay and Earn, restrict the influence of saltwater west of the Tayport narrows. Much of the tidal water is freshwater or mildly brackish.

Errol is a village in Perth and Kinross, Scotland about halfway between Dundee and Perth. It is one of the principal settlements of the Carse of Gowrie. It lies just north of the River Tay. The 2016 population of Errol was estimated to be 1,500 persons, compared to 1,070 in the 2001 Census.Errol village is in the Carse and Gowrie electoral ward of the Perthshire North Scottish parliamentary constituency and in the Tayside Health Board area.Errol is twinned with Mardié, a village on the Loire near Orléans in France.Errol is surrounded by agricultural flat fields and has a prominent attractive location above the Firth of Tay within this setting. Errol is known for its reeds, which used to be collected up to a few years ago to make thatched roofs. These reeds grow in the banks of the River Tay and act as home to a fairly uncommon bird called the bearded tit. Errol has a large church, built in 1831, known as the "Cathedral of The Carse" which can be seen from most parts of the village and from far around. Errol lies on the National Cycle Network NCN 77 from Dundee to Pitlochry and is situated about 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) from the A90 Perth to Dundee Road. This makes it popular for people who commute to work.

Inchture Village railway station was a railway station in the village of Inchture, Perthshire, Scotland. The Inchture Railway Bus service operated a service from its junction at Inchture railway station northwards along a one and a half mile stretch to the village of Inchture. Although operated by the Caledonian Railway (as part of the Dundee and Perth Railway), this was not a railway in the true sense, but a horse-drawn tramway. It began service in 1848 and during its peak ran six return journeys on weekdays, before it eventually closed on 1 January 1917. The building which used to house the tramcar still exists today in the form of a private house, with the outlines of the former garage doors still clearly visible.

Inchture (Scottish Gaelic: Innis Tùir) is a village in Scotland between Dundee and Perth on the northern side of the Firth of Tay. It is approximately nine miles (14 km) from Dundee city centre and 13 miles (21 km) from Perth. The village is bypassed by on the A90 trunk road and benefits from a flyover (grade-separated) junction onto the road making it popular with commuters working in Dundee and further afield. Inchture is a prosperous village with a wide range of housing. The village comprises a post office, flower shop, a SPAR store, hotel, a primary school, community centre and a church. There are approximately 100 original houses in the village and additional homes have been constructed by Muir Homes, Barratt Homes and Scotia Homes. The population is approximately 1500, with an active Community Council and much community engagement including an annual Village Fete. Inchture is situated within the Carse of Gowrie.Inchture is twinned with the village of Fléac near Angoulême in France. At the north end of the village is a lodge and avenue that formerly led to the mansion of Rossie Priory, now cut off by the modern A90. This avenue is lined on both sides by giant redwood trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum). These were planted in 1853, and are the first known examples of the species successfully cultivated outside North America. An Episcopal Church, All Souls, was opened in 1896, the foundation stone having been laid four years earlier. Before this, the local Episcopalians had worshiped at a chapel on the Rossie Estate and later at a mission in Invergowrie.Near Inchture is Ballindean House, significant for its association with John Wedderburn of Ballendean (NB spelling) and his slave Joseph Knight and thus with the cause of abolitionism in the United Kingdom.

Megginch Castle is a 15th-century castle in Perth and Kinross, in central Scotland. It was the family home of Cherry, 16th Baroness Strange. It is now lived in by Lady Strange's daughter, Catherine Drummond-Herdman, her husband and four children. Megginch Castle is a private family home, which is only open for special events. The gardens are home to trees such as ancient yews, there is a topiary, and in the spring there is an extensive display of daffodils. The orchard contains two National Plant Collections of Scottish apples, and pears, and cider apples. The gardens are listed on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland. The Gardens are open once a year under the Scotland's Gardens Scheme.

Gowrie (Scottish Gaelic: Gobharaidh) is a region in central Scotland and one of the original provinces of the Kingdom of Alba. It covered the eastern part of what became Perthshire. It was located to the immediate east of Atholl, and originally included the area around Perth (and the ancient Scottish royal sites of Scone), though that was later detached as Perthia. Its chief settlement is the city of Perth. Today it is most often associated with the Carse of Gowrie, the part of Gowrie south of the Sidlaw Hills running east of Perth to Dundee.

Castle Huntly is a castle in Scotland, now used as a prison under the name HMP Castle Huntly. It is located approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Dundee in the Carse of Gowrie, Perth and Kinross, close to the shore of the Firth of Tay, and can be seen from the main road linking Dundee and Perth. The castle sits on top of a rocky outcrop surrounded by what is now farmland. In ancient times this land was marshy wilderness and the decision to locate the castle on the rock may have been taken with a view to the castle's defensive position in mind.

Kinnaird (Scottish Gaelic: An Ceann Àrd, "high headland") is a village in Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. It is notable for its 15th-century castle. The four-storeyed Kinnaird Castle was a stronghold of the Threiplands of Fingask, a local Jacobite family. The castle was restored heavily by then owner Stuart Stout in the 1960s, and was later the venue for his 1988 wedding to Audrey Gregory, who reportedly became "known as the Lady of Kinnaird".The area is also home to an early-19th-century parish church. In the 18th century, it was the home of the Reverend James Adams, who contributed to the Marrow Controversy in the church of Scotland. The Carse of Gowrie, in which the village is located, is an agricultural district of Perthshire.

Norman's Law is a prominent hill at the far eastern end of the Ochil Fault, Scotland. It sits above the south bank of the River Tay, around four miles north west of Cupar. Around the summit cairn of Norman's Law are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort and settlement, owing to the hill's commanding views over the surrounding countryside and the defensive advantage provided by the steep slopes surrounding the summit. The hill fort is a designated scheduled monument.The summit of Norman's Law is easily accessible; the shortest ascent is from NO310209, about a mile west of the village of Brunton; a waymarked path to the summit starts in the village of Luthrie NO331196. There are extensive views of Central Scotland and the Grampian Mountains. On a clear day, one can see as far as Lochnagar to the north, Ben More (Crianlarich) to the west and the Moorfoot Hills to the south. The Norman's Law hill race is held annually by Fife AC and begins at the nearby village of Luthrie.
