Walt Whitman Shops

The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site is a state historic site in West Hills, New York, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site preserves the birthplace of American poet Walt Whitman.

South Huntington is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 9,422 at the 2010 census. Residents have a Huntington Station postal address. South Huntington is considered part of the greater Huntington area, which is anchored by Huntington. South Huntington is the birthplace of Walt Whitman, and the Walt Whitman Shops Mall is nearby. It is also home to St. Anthony's High School, Walt Whitman High School and the South Huntington Public Library. The Walt Whitman Shops were previously known as the Walt Whitman Shopping Center. The department store chain Abraham & Straus purchased 45 acres in South Huntington in 1956 to build a shopping mall and parking lot. An A & S store would be built as the centerpiece of the mall. The groundbreaking ceremony for the shopping center took place on April 20, 1961. The first store to open, on March 28, 1962, was Abraham & Straus, followed by Macy's on September 18, 1962. The official opening for the entire shopping center was in November 1962. It was the first enclosed shopping center on Long Island. The mall had 75 stores, lighted fountains, and a reflecting pool. The parking lot had spaces for 5,000 cars.Renovations at the mall took place in 1998, including changes to the main concourse and an elevated parking deck. Also in this time period, three new department stores were added. Bloomingdale's opened on August 5, 1998 followed by Lord & Taylor on November 11, 1998. Saks Fifth Avenue opened its doors on March 11, 1999. A second renovation was completed in November 2013. This included adding 70,000 square feet to the facility as well as doing exterior remodeling. A statue of Walt Whitman was also added.Walt Whitman Shops is currently owned by the Simon Property Group.

Whitman-Place House is a historic home located at West Hills in Suffolk County, New York. It was built about 1810 and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay shingled residence which was greatly enlarged with a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay south wing built in the 20th century. Also on the property is an early-19th-century barn and springhouse.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Joseph Whitman House is a historic home located at West Hills in Suffolk County, New York. It was built about 1692 and is a 1+1⁄2-story, four-bay shingled residence with a 1+1⁄2-story two-bay south wing. Also on the property is the site of a stone fort and an early-19th-century barn and shed.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Ezra Carll Homestead is a historic home located in South Huntington, New York in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on the northwest corner of Melville Road and Eckert Street and was built about 1700 and is a 2-story, gable-roofed, wood-shingle dwelling with a lean-to profile and second-story overhang. The oldest part of the structure is the 1+1⁄2-story, gable-roofed south wing. It has a rubblestone foundation and massive central chimney.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

John Oakley House is a historic home located at West Hills in Suffolk County, New York. It is a 1+1⁄2-story, six-bay, gable-roofed dwelling with a 1-story, one-bay, gable-roofed west wing and one-bay, shed-roofed east wing. The original structure was built about 1720 and expanded in the 1780s.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Chichester's Inn is located along Chichester Road in a wooded section of West Hills, New York, United States. It is a rare surviving example of a 17th-century inn on Long Island, mostly unchanged from its original form, although it is now used as a house. Walt Whitman, who grew up in the area, and Theodore Roosevelt were among its past patrons. In 1985 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Walt Whitman High School is a four-year public secondary school located at 301 West Hills Road, in Huntington Station, New York. It is South Huntington Union Free School District's only high school, serving students in Huntington Station, South Huntington, Melville, and West Hills. The school typically has around 2,000 students in grades 9–12.

Jayne's Hill, also known as High Hill, West Hills, Oakley's Hill, and Janes Hill, is the highest point on Long Island, New York with an elevation of between 387 feet (118 m) and 400.9 feet (122.2 m) above sea level. It is situated on the Harbor Hill moraine, a terminal moraine that makes up the northern spine of Long Island, in West Hills County Park in Suffolk County, a little more than a mile to the north of Melville.

Halsey Estate-Tallwood is a historic home located at West Hills in Suffolk County, New York, known locally as "Tallwood" but more formally known as the "Halsey Estate". It was built in 1925 and is a symmetrically arranged, 22-bay shingled residence with a central block and a series of either gable or gambrel roofs and varies in height from 1+1⁄2 stories to 2+1⁄2 stories. The central 2+1⁄2-story block is five bays wide and has a gambrel roof. It is representative of the Colonial Revival style. Its builder, Richard Townley Haines Halsey, was a partner in Teff, Halsey and Company, brokers, and W. J. Sloane Company. It has been used since the 1970s as a children's day camp.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
