Johnston High School is a public secondary school located in Johnston, Iowa. It is part of the Johnston Community School District. The school serves approximately 1,600 students in grades 10 through 12. Freshman students attend Johnston Middle School.

On weekdays, local DJs are heard during the day, while in the evening, KHKI airs two nationally syndicated Nash FM programs from parent company Cumulus: "Nash Nights Live" and "The Blair Garner Show." On weekends, "Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40" is heard. KHKI's studios are in Urbandale, Iowa, with other Cumulus Des Moines stations: KJJY, KGGO, KWQW, and KBGG. Its transmitter is located on Northwest 100th Street on the border between Grimes and Johnston. While the maximum power for most FM stations in Iowa is 100,000 watts, KHKI's effective radiated power (ERP) is slightly higher, at 105,000 watts. Because KHKI dates back to 1961, it is grandfathered at the higher output.

Urbandale Community School District is a school district headquartered in Urbandale, Iowa. It serves a portion of the Urbandale city limits, and is entirely in Polk County.In January 2018 the district presented a plan to replace four elementary schools built in the 1950s and 1960s-Jensen, Olmsted, Rolling Green and Valerius-with two new buildings.

The Herrold Bridge is a historic structure located near the unincorporated community of Herrold, Iowa, United States. It carried a gravel road for 156 feet (48 m) over Beaver Creek. Completed in 1921, this concrete cantilevered deck girder bridge replaced an earlier timber pile structure. It was designed by the Iowa State Highway Commission the previous year, and the Polk County Board of Supervisors awarded the construction contract to Ben Cole of Ames. The total cost of construction was $24,283.36. The bridge features three arched concrete deck girder spans that are cantilevered from concrete abutments and piers. It is considered one of the most technologically significant of Iowa's concrete girder bridges. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. While it remains in place, the Herrold Bridge was replaced by a newer span slightly downstream.

Herrold is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Iowa, United States. Herrold is located in Jefferson Township. The state capital and county seat of Des Moines is slightly over 10 miles to the southeast. Since 1990, the town has been part of nearby Camp Dodge and is not open to the public. The historic Herrold Bridge crosses the Beaver Creek to the west of the community.

In the early hours of November 2, 2016, Des Moines Police Department officer Anthony Beminio and Urbandale Police Department officer Justin Martin were killed in separate "ambush-style" shootings in and near Des Moines, Iowa. The perpetrator in both shootings, identified as 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale, Iowa, was apprehended by police hours later. Greene pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life without parole on May 20, 2017.
