The Mohawk Trail is a trail in Northern Massachusetts. The trail began as a Native American trade route which connected Atlantic tribes with tribes in Upstate New York and beyond. It followed the Millers River, Deerfield River and crossed the Hoosac Range, in the area that is now northwestern Massachusetts.

Bear Swamp Hydroelectric Power Station

Bear Swamp Generating Station or Jack Cockwell Station is a pumped-storage hydroelectric underground power station that straddles the Deerfield River in Rowe and Florida, Massachusetts. The reservoir covers 88 acres (36 ha), storing about 1.7 billion gallons at an elevation of 1,600 feet (490 m) above sea level, 770 feet (230 m) higher than the lower reservoir. To move the huge volumes of water (8,800 cubic feet per second uphill and 10,760 cf/s downhill) in both directions, Bear Swamp uses reversible water turbines of the Francis type. Construction started in 1968 and was completed in 1974. New England Power Company developed Bear Swamp with the intention of absorbing and storing some of the excess electrical power from the Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Station which was located nearby (almost adjacent) on the Deerfield River, and was then in operation at the time Bear Swamp was constructed. Yankee Rowe was later decommissioned in 1991, however Bear Swamp continues operate by absorbing electrical power from the grid and later returning electrical power to the grid. Although the efficiency of that is very low, the power is stored when demand is off peak, when supply is in excess and demand is low resulting in that power being low priced. Because of the low efficiency, only a small fraction of that power is later returned to the grid, but at a much higher price during peak load periods when New England's electricity consumers place the heaviest demand on the system. The station can produce about 600 megawatts (800,000 hp) of power for up to 6 hours during the day. The station can respond from zero to full capacity in under 20 minutes. An underground visitor' center provides an automated slide show and other information about the history of the project and its site. More than 60,000 guests visit this location each year.

The Bissell Bridge is a historic covered bridge on Heath Road (Massachusetts Route 8A) over Mill Brook in Charlemont, Massachusetts. The TECO Enhanced Long through truss bridge was built in 1951 by the T. J. Harvey Company, to a design by the Timber Engineering Company (TECO) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT). The bridge is 92 feet (28 m) long, and rests on stone-faced reinforced concrete abutments. Mill Brook passes fifteen to twenty feet below the bridge at normal water levels. It was the first covered bridge to be built in Massachusetts in the 20th century, replacing an earlier covered bridge that dated to about 1881.The bridge is sited near an old mill dam and pond, and is not far (about 200 feet (61 m)) from the house of Henry W. Bissell, for whom it is named. The town appropriated $1000 for its construction in 1880, and it is assumed to have been built not long afterward. By the mid 20th century the bridge was deteriorating, and the DOT condemned it. The town vehemently opposed the construction of a modern steel-and-concrete structure as its replacement, and the matter drew a great deal of media attention. The design that resulted from the decision-making process was a near replica of the original bridge. It was built at a cost (shared by all levels of government) of $50,000 to $55,000. The only major deviations from the original design were made to accommodate modern roadway requirements. By the end of the 20th century, the new bridge was also deteriorating, and was closed and rehabilitated. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
