Albany, Georgia

Albany High School was a four-year secondary school located in Albany, Georgia, United States. It was a part of the Dougherty County School System and educated students in grades 9-12. Albany High School was established in 1886 after H.M. McIntosh, editor of the Albany News and Advertiser, initiated a campaign to raise the funds necessary to erect the school. It was the first high school in the county. Two years after the school opened, it was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin. Classes were temporarily held in the town courthouse while the academy was rebuilt. Student enrollment rapidly increased during the first two decades. Overcrowding led to expansion and a new building was constructed in 1908. Located at the intersection of Monroe Street and Society Avenue, it contained ten classrooms. In 1925, the high school moved to 1000 North Jefferson Street and in the fall of 1954, it relocated to Residence Avenue. On June 6, 2017, the Dougherty County School System voted to close the school after summer classes finished. Rising seniors were allowed to choose to attend any one of the three remaining high schools.

The John A. Davis House, also known as Albany Little Theatre, is the home of a theater, Theatre Albany. The house, which has architectural distinction, was built in about 1853, and a contemporary theater with no architectural pretensions was added at the rear in the 1960s. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The house was originally built as an Italianate villa with a central brick tower flanked by one-story wooden porches. A Classical Revival portico and porches were added in the early 1900s.

Theatre Albany is an amateur production company in downtown Albany, Georgia, U.S. It presents six major productions annually. The theater seats 314 and is located at 514 Pine Avenue in the Capt. John A. Davis House which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Old St. Teresa Church is located in downtown Albany, Georgia, on Residence Avenue. It is the oldest church building in Albany. The name Old St. Teresa Catholic Church was given, because it changed to a new location in Albany. The church was kept in use and at least one Mass is a held every week.

The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Albany, Georgia is a three-story building that was built during 1910–1912. Its architecture style is primarily Second Renaissance Revival architecture and is credited to U.S. Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor. It is perhaps one of Knox's last designed works; he retired as Supervising Architect in 1912. It served historically as a courthouse and as a post office. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Area code 229 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for the southwest corner of the U.S. state of Georgia. The numbering plan area includes the cities of Albany, Valdosta, Adel, Leesburg, Bainbridge, Americus, Vienna, Fitzgerald, Ocilla, Cairo, Moultrie, Thomasville, McRae-Helena, and Tifton. The area code was created on August 1, 2000 in a three-way split of area code 912, which had served the southern half of Georgia for forty-six years. Savannah and the eastern portion retained area code 912, while Macon and the northern portion were assigned to area code 478. A one-year permissive dialing period was in effect until August 1, 2001 for ten-digit dialing into the numbering plan area, but several local routes remained available with seven-digit dialing. Projections of October 2021 indicated that the area code is not expected to need relief until 2029.

The Samuel Farkas House is a historic residence in Albany, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 9, 1977. It is located at 328 West Broad Avenue. Samuel Farkas (October 25, 1921 - December 30, 2012) was a war hero in World War II and part of the family that operated the New Albany Hotel. He hired Ray Charles to give a performance on piano in the hotel's basement Continental Room.

The Albany Municipal Auditorium is a multi-purpose auditorium located in downtown Albany, Georgia, U.S. The 965-seat, classic style auditorium includes an orchestra level, as well as first and second balconies and it was listed as "Municipal Auditorium" on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior in 1975. The auditorium is part of a sports, entertainment and convention complex that also includes the Albany Civic Center and the Veterans Park Amphitheater.

The Dougherty County Public Library is a public library system serving Dougherty County, Georgia, United States. The Central Library is located in Albany. The library is a member of PINES, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service that covers 53 library systems in 143 counties of Georgia. Any resident in a PINES-supported library system has access to the system's collection of 10.6 million books. The library is also serviced by GALILEO, a program of the University System of Georgia which stands for "GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online". This program offers residents in supported libraries access to over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. It also boasts over 10,000 journal titles in full text.

New Albany Hotel is a historic hotel in Albany, Georgia added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It is now being used as an apartment complex known as The Flats @ 249. It was previously being used as a senior living facility known as Albany Heights. It is located at 249 Pine Avenue. Sam Farkas, a World War II hero, was the hotel's manager. Built in 1925, it a six-story Georgian Revival-style building. It is constructed of terra cotta blocks dressed with brick, upon a concrete and steel frame. Tapestry brick, in Flemish bond, sheathes the first five floors; Dutch Cross bond brick veneer sheathes the sixth floor. It was designed by Atlanta architect Raymond C. Snow. It was deemed significant as "a good example of the early-twentieth century Georgian Revival-style commercial buildings found in small Georgia cities and as one of several Georgian Revival-style buildings built in Albany during this period. In terms of commerce, the hotel is significant as one of two major hotels built in Albany during the 1920's to accommodate travel needs generated by the railroads. In terms of local history, the hotel was a center of Albany social life during the 1920's and 1930's."

Albany Theatre is a historic theater in Albany, Georgia, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 21, 2006. The Albany Theatre opened on September 12, 1927. The building, no longer in operation as a theatre, is located at 107 North Jackson Street. The Albany Theatre's first production featured H. L. Tallman on the Robert Morton Organ Company pipe organ (Opus 2304) along with Ralph Barnes and his Albany Theatre Orchestra accompanying The Magic Flame starring Ronald Colman and Vilma Bánky. Homer W. McCallon was the theater's director. The theatre adjusted to films with sound and remained in business until the 1970s. The theatre was purchased from the Farkas Estate by Oglethorpe Development Group, a minority enterprise which began underwriting a restoration of the theatre as a performing arts center. A 2011 plan was to convert the theater into an apartment building. The Theatre caught fire in the early morning hours of January 24, 2018. Investigators believe the fire was started when vagrants living in the building threw a lit cigarette onto the roof and caught trash on fire. One person died of soot and smoke inhalation. Three other people, believed to be living in the building, were rescued.
