Belvoir is a small, unincorporated community in Fauquier County, Virginia. It is situated between the towns of Marshall and The Plains. It is off US Route 17, at the crossroads of the John Marshall Highway (State Route 55), Zulla Road (State Route 709), and Belvoir Road (State Route 709). Because of the development of Marshall and The Plains, Belvoir as a hamlet has lost local relevance. The area is usually referred to as The Plains because it shares its ZIP Code of 20189.

Casanova is a small unincorporated village in Fauquier County, Virginia, United States at the intersection of Casanova Rd (VA Route 616) and Rogues Rd. It is also the location of its own post office, with the zip code 20139. It is home to The Inn at Poplar Springs. It is also home to Melrose Castle (now a private residence) which dates back to 1854. The Casanova Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Other listings are Melrose Castle (also known simply as Melrose) and Weston.

Bristersburg is an unincorporated community in Fauquier County. It is in the southern part of the county, centered on State Route 806 and State Route 616. The village is near Prince William County and Stafford County. The Bristersburg Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Airlie is an unincorporated hamlet in Fauquier County, Virginia situated between US Route 17 and US Route 29. The village itself runs along State Route 605, which is named Airlie Road. It is home to the Airlie Conference Center and Harry's Restaurant. The original post office for Airlie was closed and the building was converted to be part of the meeting facilities in the 1990s. Airlie is within the Warrenton 20187 ZIP Code.

Belle Meade is a small, unincorporated community in Fauquier County, Virginia, situated on State Route 55, and bypassed by Interstate 66. The hamlet is east of the Warren County line in the vicinity of Distillery Road. The Norfolk Southern Railway B-line runs through it, as well as being near the Appalachian Trail and the G Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area. The term 'Belle Meade' is losing local use. Belle Meade is also the name of a small suburban community in Roanoke County, Southwest Virginia, with the zip code of 24018.

Melrose, also known as Melrose Castle, is a historic home located near Casanova, Fauquier County, Virginia. The house was built between 1856 and 1860, and is a two-story, five-bay, L-shaped Gothic Revival style dwelling. It features a three-story-octagonal tower in the center bay and castellation along the parapet. The house was enlarged considerably around 1920 through a large addition to the west end for expanded service areas.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Weston is a historic home and farm located near Casanova, Fauquier County, Virginia. The original section of the house was built about 1810, with additions made in 1860, 1870, and 1893. The original section was a simple, 1+1⁄2-story, log house. A 1+1⁄2-story frame and weatherboard addition was built in 1860, and a 1+1⁄2-story frame and weatherboard rear ell was added in 1870. In 1893, a two-story frame and weatherboard addition was built, making the house L-shaped. This section features a steeply-pitched gable roof with gable dormers and decoratively sawn bargeboards and eaves trim—common characteristics of the Carpenter Gothic style. Also on the property are a number of contributing 19th century outbuildings including the kitchen / wash house, smokehouse, spring house, tool house, blacksmith shop, stable, and barn. Weston is open as a house and farm museum.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Weston Wildlife Management Area is a 271-acre (110 ha) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Fauquier County, Virginia, near the town of Casanova. Although small in size compared to other WMAs in the state, it nevertheless features a variety of habitats, including hardwood forests along Turkey Run. Former tracts of farmland are reverting to cedar thickets, and there are a number of fields around the area as well, divided by well-maintained hedgerows. Turkey Run provides a water supply year-round, and forms the eastern boundary of the property. Within the area's boundaries is a 10-acre (40,000 m2) parcel of privately owned land.Weston WMA is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is open to the public for fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and primitive camping. Firearms are not permitted, although a "chase-only" season is available for training hunting hounds. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.

The First Battle of Auburn was fought on October 13, 1863, between Union infantry and Confederate cavalry forces at the start of the Bristoe Campaign during the American Civil War. A Union infantry column stumbled upon a Confederate cavalry reconnaissance party and a short, inconclusive fight ensued. The Confederate cavalry withdrew in the face of the superior Union force, but a much larger body of Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, attempting to raid a Union wagon train became entrapped by the column, forcing them to abandon the raid and hide in a ravine overnight awaiting Confederate infantry to come to their aid.

The Second Battle of Auburn was fought on October 14, 1863, in Fauquier County, Virginia, between Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War. Confederate forces led by Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell led a sortie to extricate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry command, trapped between two Union columns and clashed with the rearguard of the Federal II Corps under Brig. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren. Stuart was successfully extricated but the Federal wagon train avoided Confederate capture in the inconclusive fight.

Germantown is a historic unincorporated rural community in Fauquier County, Virginia, United States. It is the resting place of John Jacob Richter (also spelled Rector). He was buried there in 1729. It is located in and around current-day C. M. Crockett Park, which contains the popular local fishing destination of Germantown Lake. Chief Justice John Marshall was born in Germantown. Archeological sites relating to the settlement are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Warrenton Junction Raid (May 3, 1863) was a surprise attack by Confederate guerrilla warriors on a Union cavalry detachment during the American Civil War. The raid took place near a railroad junction in Virginia's Fauquier County, less than 10 miles (16 km) from the town of Warrenton. Confederate Major (eventually Colonel) John S. Mosby led the attack against about 100 men from the Union's 1st (West) Virginia Cavalry. At first, the raid was very successful, as many of the Union soldiers surrendered to the rebels. The remaining portion of the surprised force was surrounded in a house, and two of their leaders were wounded. The house was set on fire, and the Union soldiers surrendered. As Mosby's men rounded up prisoners and horses, a detachment of the 5th New York Cavalry surprised the rebels and rescued most of the captured Union soldiers. After a short fight, more men from the 5th New York, and the 1st Vermont Cavalry, joined in the pursuit of Mosby's fleeing rebels. Casualties for the detachment of the 1st (West) Virginia Cavalry, the unit surprised by Mosby, totaled 16 men. Although Mosby was forced to release most of his prisoners while escaping from the 5th New York Cavalry, he still managed to keep at least two West Virginians in captivity. Mosby lost 1 killed and at least 30 taken prisoner—many of whom were wounded. The 5th New York Cavalry had three men wounded. The two sides involved in this minor fight became very skilled in warfare—but were still learning those skills at that time. The Union's 1st Virginia Cavalry, renamed 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment two months later, became one of West Virginia's most effective regiments and had 14 Medal of Honor recipients. It fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, had an important role in eliminating the Confederate Army of the Valley, and was present at General Robert E. Lee's surrender of his Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederacy's Mosby's Rangers suffered their first defeat, but became masters of guerrilla warfare and were a constant concern for Union armies in eastern Virginia.
