Delaplane, Virginia

Delaplane Historic District is a national historic district located at Delaplane, Fauquier County, Virginia. The rural village of Delaplane was founded in 1852 around the Piedmont Station of the newly chartered Manassas Gap Railroad (originally to link the Alexandria and Orange Railroad with the line running into the Shenandoah valley at Manassas; still operated by the Norfolk Southern Railroad). The railroad built a station, a warehouse and a store, and a town grew, as with the adjacent stops at Marshall and The Plains. As Delaplane prospered, the previously prosperous town of Paris on the Dumfries-Winchester Road (Virginia Route 17), lagged. The town's name was changed in 1874 to honor its postmaster and owner of the general store, Washington E. Delapane. The historic district today looks much like in 1861, when troops embarked en route to the First Battle of Bull Run, although that conflict (and troop movements of Union and Confederate Forces, including Mosby's Rangers) devastated the area. The surrounding area is part of the Commonwealth of Virginia's Mosby Heritage area, the first such heritage area and designated in order to draw attention to the historic, natural and cultural resources in this section of Northern Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It is included in the larger Crooked Run Valley Rural Historic District (at its southern end) also designated that year. It includes 24 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites in Delaplane. Several residential and commercial buildings date from the mid-19th century; other dwellings and business date from the late-19th- and ear1y-20th century dwellings and some commercial structures. Notable buildings include two vernacular Greek Revival style, two-story, brick structures that were used as stores, stations, and warehouses (1852); Roger's Depot; the Delaplane House (c. 1852); the old Shacklett's Mill (c. 1910); the old Delaplane Store (Turner Seaton's Store and Shacklett's store) that now houses the post office; and the McDonald House. The Westminster Presbyterian Church (now converted into a home) lies in this historic district, but the current town's two historic churches both lie slightly outside the limits of this historic district, although within the Crooked Run Valley historic district: Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Delaplane) (on Route 17; founded 1850 and used as a hospital by both Union and Confederate troops) and Pleasant Vale Baptist Church (at the intersection of route 724 and 826, built 1845).

Yew Hill-Robert Ashby's Tavern-Shacklett's Tavern, known before 1760 as "Watts" or "Watts Ordinary", is a historic inn and tavern located near Delaplane, Fauquier County, Virginia. The main house was built about 1760–1761, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, Colonial-era frame structure. It sits on a stone foundation and features a jerkin-head gable roof. Also on the property are the contributing meat house, built about 1760–1817; barn (1798–1799, 1857); and spring house ruin (c. 1800). The building housed an ordinary from the time of its construction until 1879.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Ashleigh is a Greek Revival style house located in Fauquier County near Delaplane, Virginia. The one-story house was built in 1840 for Margaret Marshal, the granddaughter of John Marshall on a portion of the family's Oak Hill estate (not to be confused with the nearby James Monroe House named Oak Hill). The house was designed by Margaret Marshall and built by a man named Sutton. Margaret married John Thomas Smith in 1845 and they lived at Ashleigh until 1860. That year the house was sold to another relative, Gray Carroll. The property was sold by Carroll to Samuel P. Bayly in 1870. The house passed through a number of owners, with Dr. Edmund Horgan renovating the house in 1929. Horgan obtained pine paneling that had been removed from the White House during renovation work and installed it in the lower southeast room.The house is one story with three bays flanked by one-story two-bay wings on either side. The sloping site makes the basement a full story on the south side of the main and west wings. The house is built of stone covered with stucco. A Greek Doric portico is centered on the main facade. An entrance hall extends across the front with a parlor behind. Halls extend into the center of each wing down a flight of three steps, with two rooms on either side. The garden features a boxwood hedge.Ashleigh was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1973.

Woodside is a historic home located near Delaplane, Fauquier County, Virginia. The oldest section was built about 1800, and is located in the rear. It is of hewn log construction (possibly chestnut), clad with a brick veneer in the mid-20th century and connected to the main house by a hyphen. The main house was built in 1848, and is a two-story, three bay, brick structure in a vernacular Greek Revival style. Also on the property are the contributing log kitchen and a log smokehouse, both built about 1800.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Oak Hill is an historic home of the Marshall family in Delaplane, Virginia and a working farm with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It lies north of I-66, just east of the US-17/Delaplane exit from westbound I-66. It consists of two separate houses connected by a passageway. The earlier and smaller house, a Colonial farmhouse measuring 32 ft × 30 ft (9.8 m × 9.1 m), was built in 1773 by Colonel Thomas Marshall, father of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. John Marshall lived in the Oak Hill house until his marriage in 1783.In 1819, John Marshall built an attached 40 ft × 37 ft (12 m × 11 m) temple-form Classical Revival house for his firstborn son, lawyer and future delegate Thomas. Thomas died in 1835 and his son, CSA Lt.Col. Thomas Marshall in late 1864, so Oak Hill was sold out of the Marshall family. The property is now a private residence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.Oak Hill is currently owned by Charles Chamberlain. It is located directly to the North of Barrel Oak Winery, and has three acres of Norton grapes planted on the Westward-facing slope facing I-66.

The district encompasses 386 contributing buildings, 27 contributing sites, and 21 contributing structures. It includes the separately listed Delaplane Historic District and Paris Historic District.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Cromwell's Run Rural Historic District is a national historic district located near Rectortown, Fauquier County, Virginia. The district encompasses 384 contributing buildings, 20 contributing sites, and 36 contributing structures. It includes the separately listed Atoka Historic District and Rectortown Historic District.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, with a boundary increase the same year.

The district includes dwellings dating back to the 18th century, churches, a school, an Odd Fellows hall, a post office, multiple commercial buildings, and several cemeteries that illustrate the town's growth and development. Notable buildings include the Maidstone Ordinary (c. 1763), the Rector-Slack Log House, the Ashby House (c. 1800), the Georg Mann House, The Brick Store House (c. 1840), Rector's Warehouse and Station (c. 1835), Denham, Maidstone, Rectortown United Methodist Church (1894), the Jackson-Grant House (1924), Slack's Store (1890), and the Mt. It encompasses 16 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in the Reconstruction-era African-American rural village of Ashville. The district contains nine properties, including the Gothic Revival style Ashville Baptist Church (1899), Ashville School (1910s), Ashville Community Cemetery, and a concentration of historic dwellings and related outbuildings.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The manor house was built about 1812, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-bay, brick and stuccoed stone house in the Federal style. It has a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay summer kitchen, built about 1850, and connected to the main house by a hyphen. Also on the property are the contributing meat house (c. 1812); the barn (c. 1830); a chicken house (c. 1900); a cattle shed (c. 1940); a loafing shed (c. 1940); machine shed (c. 1940); a four-foot square, stone foundation (c. 1812); stone spring house ruin (c. 1812); the Edmonds-Settle-Chappelear Cemetery (1826-1940); an eight-by-twelve-foot stone foundation (c. 1900); a tenant house ruin (c. 1900); a stone well at the manor house (c. 1812); and a loading chute (c. 1940).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
