Battin High School was a public high school in Elizabeth, in Union County, New Jersey, United States, which operated as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. The school opened in 1889 as a coeducational institution. After converting to a girls-only school in 1929, it operated on a single-sex basis for 48 years until the end of the 1976–77 school year, ending its status as one half of the state's only pair of public high schools operated separately for male and female students.

Thomas Jefferson High School was an all-boys public high school in Elizabeth, in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, which operated as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. The school opened in 1929 at which time Battin High School became an all-girls school. The school operated on a single-sex basis for 48 years until the end of the 1976–77 school year, ending its status as one half of the state's only pair of public high schools operated separately for male and female students.In 1957, district officials stated that the inability to determine attendance zones for the two comprehensive high schools after Thomas Jefferson High School opened in 1929 combined with the expansive shop facilities in the new building, led the district to decide to split students by sex, with girls at Battin and boys at Thomas Jefferson.The school closed at the end of the 1976–77 school year, after the Elizabeth High School complex was completed and all of the district's students, male and female, were accommodated at the new four-building facility, ending the city's status as "the only community in the state with separate public high schools for boys and girls". The $29.3 million project included renovations to Thomas Jefferson High School, which was integrated into the new complex. The Battin High School building, together with the four existing junior high schools, was repurposed as a middle school for grades six through eight.The building now hosts the Admiral William Halsey Leadership Academy and the John E. Dwyer Technology Academy.

American Airlines Flight 6780, the first fatal crash of a Convair 240, occurred on January 22, 1952.The twin-propeller aircraft was on the routing Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse-Newark. On final approach to runway 6 at Newark Airport using the instrument landing system, it crashed at 3:45 p.m. into a house at the intersection of Williamson and South Streets, in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, approximately 3.4 miles (5.5 km) southeast of Newark. The cause of the crash was never determined. The plane, which had gone 2,100 feet (640 m) off course to the right, narrowly missed hitting the Battin High School for girls, which had dismissed for the day only 45 minutes before.

Cicarell Academy), is a four-year public high school located in Elizabeth, in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. In 2009, the school and its more than 5,000 students was split into six separate houses, each operating as an independent school with its own principal and subject of focus, including one which has retained the Elizabeth High School name. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1978.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,287 students and 76.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 16.9:1. There were 588 students (45.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 173 (13.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.Starting in the 2016–17 school year, both upper and lower academies of Elizabeth High School merged into the newly built Frank J. Cicarell Academy, which is located next to the Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy.

Halsey Health and Public Safety Academy is a four-year comprehensive public high school in Elizabeth, in Union County, New Jersey, United States, operating as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. The Leadership Academy shares a large building with the John Dwyer Technology Academy, the Peter B. Gold Administration Building, and the Thomas Dunn Sports Center, which together form the Main Complex. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 2013.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,331 students and 81.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 16.4:1. There were 715 students (53.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 89 (6.7% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

St. John's Parsonage is a historic house at 633 Pearl Street in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, United States. It served as the parsonage and school for St. John's Church from 1749 to about 1885, after which it was used by the parish for "charitable purposes" until 1902. It was thereafter sold and used as a boarding house until purchased by the Elizabethtown Historical Society in 1960 and renovated.A stone plaque on the facade between the first and second stories states it was built 1696 and rebuilt 1817. The red brick Federal style structure dates to at least 1749, and was restored in 1960 to its 1818 appearance. One wing is believed to be date to a 1696 structure. The floor plan and silhouette are typical of New Jersey homes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Union County Courthouse is the county courthouse for Union County, New Jersey located in the county seat of Elizabeth. The 17 story, 238 ft (73 m) tall Neoclassical building, completed in 1931, is the tallest in the city. It is a contributing property to the Mid-Town Historic District. The courthouse building with 17-story tower was designed by the architect Oakley and Son and completed in 1931. The courthouse complex includes a 3-story portion, a 7-story annex building, built in 1927 a 5-story annex building, built in 1964 and an 8-story courtroom building, built in 1932. As of May, 2015, peregrine falcons had been nesting on the courthouse.

Siloam Hope First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth (Old First of Elizabeth and formerly known as the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth) is a historic church at 14–44 Broad Street in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, United States.It was built in 1783 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 for its significance in architecture.The churchyard dates from 1687 and has over two thousand graves, many from the American Revolutionary War, including the Reverend James Caldwell.In 2013, a Bible dating from 1699 belonging to founder John Ogden (colonist) was returned to the congregation.In 2019, the First Presbyterian Church merged with the Siloam Hope Presbyterian Church, becoming the Siloam Hope First Presbyterian Church. The newly merged congregation would remain at its original Broad Street location.

Elizabeth Borough was a borough that existed in Essex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, from 1740 until 1855. Elizabeth was established as a borough by Royal Charter on February 8, 1740, and was rechartered by the New Jersey Legislature on November 28, 1789.Portions of the borough were taken to form Union Township (November 23, 1808) and Clinton Township (April 14, 1834).On March 13, 1855, the City of Elizabeth was created, consolidating Elizabeth Borough and Elizabeth Township. With the creation of the City of Elizabeth, Elizabeth Township was dissolved.

The John E. Dwyer Technology Academy is a four-year comprehensive public high school serving students in ninth through twelfth grades in Elizabeth, in Union County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Elizabeth Public Schools. The Technology Academy shares one large building with the Admiral William Halsey Leadership Academy, the Peter B. Gold Administration Building, and the Thomas Dunn Sports Center, which together form the Main Complex most commonly known as "The Main" to students and teachers. The Main complex holds more students, teachers, and administrators than the other high school in the city. It is known as the heart of all Elizabeth Academies. The ninth-grade students of John E. Dwyer are housed in the Annex Building, which was originally located at 501 Union Ave Elizabeth, NJ 07208. Beginning in September 2022 the Annex Building will be moved to St. Anthony’s, located at 853 Third Avenue.The school was named in honor of John E. Dwyer, an Elizabeth educator for many years who served as a teacher, guidance counselor, Vice Principal, Principal and as Superintendent of Schools. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 2013.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,405 students and 99.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 14.1:1. There were 741 students (52.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 85 (6.0% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Elizabeth is a city and the county seat of Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the city retained its ranking as the state's fourth-most-populous city (behind neighboring Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson), with a population of 137,298, an increase of 12,329 (+9.9%) from the 2010 census count of 124,969, which in turn reflected an increase of 4,401 (3.7%) from the 120,568 counted in the 2000 census. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the city's population was 134,283 in 2022, ranking the city the 210th-most populous in the country, making it the fifth-most populous municipality of any type in the state, falling behind Lakewood Township, where the population was estimated to be 139,506, as of that year.
