Grafton Notch

Grafton Notch State Park is a public recreation area in Grafton Township, Oxford County, Maine. The state park occupies 3,129 acres (1,266 ha) surrounding Grafton Notch, the mountain pass between Old Speck Mountain and Baldpate Mountain, mountains in the Mahoosuc Range. The park is abutted by the eastern and western sections of the Mahoosuc Public Reserved Land, which total 31,807 acres (12,872 ha). The park is managed by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

Old Speck Mountain, also known as Old Speckle Mountain, is a mountain located in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The mountain, the fourth-highest in the state, is the northeasternmost and highest of the Mahoosuc Range, the northeasternmost part of the White Mountains. Old Speck is flanked to the southwest by Mahoosuc Arm, and faces Baldpate Mountain to the northeast across Grafton Notch. Old Speck is within the watershed of the Androscoggin River, which drains into Merrymeeting Bay, the estuary of the Kennebec River, and then into the Gulf of Maine. The north and east faces of Old Speck drain into the Bear River, then into the Androscoggin. The southeast and southwest faces drain into the Bull Branch of Goose Eye Brook, then into the Sunday River and the Androscoggin. The northwest face drains into Silver Stream, then into Chickwolnepy Stream and the Androscoggin. The summit of Old Speck is on the southern boundary of Grafton Notch State Park. The Appalachian Trail, a 2,170-mile (3,490 km) National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, runs along the Mahoosuc Range, 0.3 miles (0.5 km) west of the summit of Old Speck. A short side trail runs from the Appalachian Trail to the summit of the mountain. Speck Pond is located below the mountain's summit, at 3,400 feet (1,000 m), it is stocked with brook trout. The Appalachian Trail descends 1.1 miles (1.8 km) from a location near the summit of Old Speck Mountain to the pond. Of the 49 4000 Footers of the White Mountains, Old Speck is the only one in Maine.

Baldpate Mountain is a mountain located in Oxford County, Maine. Baldpate has two prominent peaks; West Peak has 3,662 feet (1,116 m) of elevation, and stands 222 feet (68 m) above the col between them. Baldpate is flanked to the north by Surplus Mountain, to the northeast by Black Mountain, and to the southeast by Mount Hittie. To the southwest, Baldpate Mountain faces Old Speck Mountain across Grafton Notch, which by convention marks the northeast end of the Mahoosuc Range. Baldpate Mountain is within the watershed of the Androscoggin River, which drains into Merrymeeting Bay, the estuary of the Kennebec River, and then into the Gulf of Maine. The northwest side of Baldpate Mountain drains into the Swift Cambridge River, then into the Dead Cambridge River and Umbagog Lake, the source of the Androscoggin River. The southeast and southwest sides of Baldpate drain into the Bear River, then into the Androscoggin. The northeast side of Baldpate Mtn. drains into the West Branch of the Ellis River, then into the Androscoggin. The Appalachian Trail, a 2,170 mi (3,490 km) National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, runs from Grafton Notch to Surplus Mountain across both peaks of Baldpate.

Success Pond is a 282-acre (1.14 km2) water body located in Coos County in northern New Hampshire, United States, in the township of Success. Water from the pond flows west via Chickwolnepy Stream to the Androscoggin River. There are a number of summer houses, cottages, and cabins located on the pond. Recreational uses include swimming, boating, and fishing. The lake is classified as a coldwater fishery, with observed species including brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass.

Goose Eye Mountain, also known as Mt. Goose High, is a mountain located in Oxford County, Maine, about 1 mi (1.6 km). (2 km) east of the New Hampshire-Maine border. The mountain is the second-highest peak of the Mahoosuc Range of the White Mountains.

The Mahoosuc Range, a northern extension of the White Mountains, straddles the border between New Hampshire and Maine. The range's highest peak, 4,170-foot (1,270 m) Old Speck Mountain, is the fifth-highest peak in Maine. Substantial parts of the range are publicly owned as parts of the National Park Service Appalachian Trail corridor and Grafton Notch State Park in Maine. The range is a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian Trail traverses the main ridge of the Mahoosucs between Shelburne, New Hampshire and Grafton Notch in Maine. Mahoosuc Notch, considered one of the most difficult sections of the Appalachian Trail, cuts a deep cleft in the middle of the range between Mahoosuc Mountain and Fulling Mill Mountain. The exact origins of the word are unknown. One possibility is that it comes from the Abenaki phrase meaning “abode of hungry animals”. It is also plausible that the name corresponds to the Massachusett for “mountain peak”.

Success is an unincorporated township in Coös County, New Hampshire, United States. It is located directly to the east of the city of Berlin, and borders on the state of Maine. Success is part of the Berlin, NH–VT Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the township had a population of 4. There are seasonal homes, cabins, and cottages mainly located around Success Pond, which give the township an additional small seasonal population. As of 2005, one of the larger landowners in Success is the Androscoggin Valley Regional Refuse Disposal District.

North Bald Cap, formerly known as Mount Success, is a mountain located in Coos County, New Hampshire. The mountain has an elevation of 2,893 feet (882 m) and is a part of the Mahoosuc Range of the White Mountains.

The Federal Correctional Institution, Berlin (FCI Berlin) is a medium-security United States federal prison for male inmates in New Hampshire. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. The facility also has an adjacent satellite prison camp housing minimum-security male inmates. FCI Berlin is located in Coos County in northern New Hampshire, 115 miles (185 km) north of Concord, New Hampshire, and 95 miles (153 km) northwest of Portland, Maine.

The Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility (NNHCF) is a state prison in Berlin, New Hampshire, United States. It is a part of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. It is 120 miles (190 km) north of the state capital at Concord. NNHCF contains only medium security male prisoners and has a maximum capacity of approximately 500 prisoners. In May 2009 this prison was modified to hold a total of over 740 inmates, due to the closing of the Lakes Region Facility in Laconia. It employs approximately 200 people, including correctional officers, medical staff, and administration officials. The Warden is Corey Riendeau.

The Meadow Bridge was a historic bridge across the Androscoggin River located on a spur of North Road in Shelburne, New Hampshire. It was a multi-span pin-connected truss bridge that was the first on its site when it was built in 1897 by the Groton Bridge and Manufacturing Co. The bridge consisted of three central through Pratt trusses, one pony Pratt truss, and one steel girder section. The ends of the bridge rested on stone abutments, while the interior spans were supported by circular steel piers filled with concrete and anchored in place by timber piles. The bridge was bypassed in 1984 by a modern bridge. In 2004 it was dismantled and stored on the banks of the river for future rehabilitation.The bridge's total length was about 504 feet (154 m), and it was just over 18 feet (5.5 m) wide. Its three central spans were identical Pratt trusses, 133'4" long and 20' tall. The pony truss connected the main span to the southwestern shore, and measured 73'10". It was inclined at a 3% grade. The northern approach was a steel span with stringers 24' long over a 21'3" span. This approach was inclined at a 2% grade.When the bridge was built, the river normally meandered in a channel that could be as wide as 400 feet. Silting and gravel deposits over time have altered the river's course, and it now is rarely wider than 250 feet. The main course of the river has been shifted northward, and the northernmost pier had been shored up to prevent it from being undermined. The bridge was one of the longest bridges of its type built in the state.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Berlin Regional Airport (IATA: BML, ICAO: KBML, FAA LID: BML) is an airport located in Milan, 8 miles (13 km) north of the central business district (CBD) of Berlin, a city in Coos County, New Hampshire, United States. This general aviation airport covers 575 acres (233 ha) and has one runway. It once had scheduled air service via Air Vermont and at one point Northeast Airlines. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a basic general aviation facility.
